Major Cities With The Worst Names?

Thu Jul 19, 2012 10:26 pm

So I found this article:
http://webcenters.netscape.compuserv...=fte/worsttownnames/worsttownnames

And it got me thinking, these towns are small and their names aren't really known my question is out of the many major cities in the world, which one do you think has the worst name?

My vote goes for either Miami or Pittsburgh. I don't even know where the name Miami comes from or just, I don't know it sounds weird to me and I never thought it was right to name a city like an armpit...

To tell you the truth, I never liked the name Chicago for a city. In the local Indian dialect of 160 years ago it meant "smelly onion". Why would you name a settlement after that?

Let's not forget
Intercourse, PA
Waterproof, LA
Ozona,TX (Out in the middle of the west Texas desert).

I've long since found "Rio de Janeiro" to be a particularly poor name for such an impressive city. "River of January", right, so where's the February issue?

Apart from that, I certainly wouldn't say "Augh!" if I had to go to Auckland some day.

When translated from Southern into conventional American English, the name of this town is "Insect Fight" or more accurately "Insect Brawl".

As for places, not necessarily bad names, just odd:

Truth or Consequences, NM.
King of Prussia, PA

I'd probably think of a few more, but I'm too tired.

Anybody ever been through "Junior" West Vagina ?

By the way, just as you go through "Intercourse, Pa., you end up three miles down the road in "Paradise" !

I used to have to go to New York State a lot; Used to deliver new Firebirds to "Osweego", "Otsego", "Otego", and "Owego", not to mention "Ossining", "Oneonta", Nisseqougue, Niskayuna, then the one I always had trouble finding, "Skaneateles", (which all the locals pronounce as"Skinny atlas" ). Further east, they have "Walkill", "Fishkill", ( and nearby in Pennsylvania is "Schuylkill". ( Which is not far from "Shickshinny".............)

Incidentally, Pennsylvania also has a "Woodcock", a "Steelcock", a "Stonecock, and a "Petcock" ! (not sure which is the largest)

Where on earth did you ever hear about Blue Ball, Ohio from ? I was born and raised in Middletown, and Blue Ball, (population about 2 dozen) is just a wide spot in the road on old U.S. Rt. 25, on the east edge of town.

I used to deliver a lot of cars all over Pa. and one night I was over in "Dutch Country", and it got so damned foggy I couldn't see the road; I was creeping along, about 2 miles an hour, and I could see a reflective sign up ahead, starting to materialize out of the dense fog..............as I got a little closer and I could read it, it said "Intercourse 1 Mile"; ( at the time, I didn't even know there was a place named that ); in later years, I was always amused by the close proximity of "Paradise" to Intercourse; ( and Blue Ball is just a few miles away as well. )

Getting back to Blue Ball, Ohio...........I haven't been to the Middletown area in 10 yrs or so, but I'd be surprised if there's even a sign on old Rt 25 saying Blue Ball any more, what with Middletown sprawling out in every direction, poor old BB had been completely surrounded, so I was quite surprised to see someone mention BB.
