Is My House Haunted?

Sun Jul 22, 2012 12:37 am

I moved into a new house back in February and from day one the banging started.

The thuds come when I'm downstairs and it's right below where the attic door is, I've been up there and it's empty. A number of things have been happening.....

Went to work & my name badge was on upside down, only noticed when I got home but I definitely put it on properly a week before when my jacket was dry cleaned.

The TV in my bedroom won't go on with the remote but sporadically when I walk in the room.

Windows upstairs have been opened (closed when I left the house).

I have a large heavy wooden elephant, it toppled over & balanced on its trunk one night (I heard the thump but didn't realise what it was till I saw it the next day).

Tonight I noticed a strange perfume smell in the hall.

The phone constantly rings but nobody is on the other end.

I have been waking up feeling drained of energy, like I've been restless all night.

My partner has felt a hand push the shower curtain & thought it was me making a joe.

Anyone know of any good apps that can help me? Record images or sounds?

Anyone had similar experiencees?

An owl? Rodents?
Perhaps flour the floor. Or use confetti.

Well ... maybe your partner had taken off the badge and accidentially put it back on the wrong way?

I would venture to say that this could be caused by a faulty soldered joint after you moved. Same with the telephone.
Ask a technician.

Perhaps your partner opened them and then forgot to close them again?

Anything can topple over when the floor is not level, no matter how heavy. Spirit level?

Seriously: Perhaps you are sleepwalking? This may explain other things as well.

In rooms where you feel activity...such as your bedroom since you say you wake up feeling drained of energy, try taking some pictures, see if you pick up any orbs or anything unusual. Do the same thing in the hallway. A regular camera should work fine for this, just keep the flash off since that can create light spots.

I'd be most interested in some of the activity you have witnessed such as the television not going on, the perfume smell in the hallway, and the hand on the shower curtain.

Approximately how old is your house, and have you done any research into the particular area it's located in?

I'm an amateur paranormal researcher and would be willing to try to assist you. PM me if you're interested.

Well, whatever "haunted" means...

Sounds like it is. Get your stuff and move!

25 years ago, my parents moved into this house. Lots of things happened while they lived out there :
- what leakage;
- bad phone line;
- broken stuff, yada yada, yada.
Long story short, after a few years in, my parents found out that one of the construction crews was stabbed to death in that house...
Was it haunted? Who knows. My parents built a new house and moved out the old one. Haven't had any unusual problmes ever since...

"Spirit level"?
I know that's what they're called outside the US, but in the context of this thread that struck me as funny. Here we just call that particular tool a "level".

I'd be careful with making any sort of contact.. You may not get an answer you like.

My family moved into a house in the mid 90's when I was about 12 years old. For years I would hear foot steps on the hard wood floors... I would get feelings of being watched when no one else was in the house... I heard my name being called several times. Events became more pronounced my senior year in high school. I began to see flashes of light out of my peripheral vision.. These lights were always neon purple in color. Shortly before the holiday season during my senior year, I had become so stressed out over events that I demanded to see whatever it was. Two days later, I was walking into the kitchen and immediately on the opposite side of the kitchen I saw a white shadow move quickly into the corridor where my bedroom was located. I immediately ran into my parents bedroom and told my mom what I had just seen.. Up until that point I had kept everything a secret.. I had dismissed everything as an overactive imagination. However, the week prior to seeing this apparition had changed my mind. My mom looked at me and told me not to tell my two younger brothers. After seeing the apparition things began to calm down and within a year I had moved away from home. Four years later I moved back to the state and ever since will stay at my parents home when they travel. Things have still occurred, although not in a few years. The last major thing occurred about two years ago. My parents were traveling one weekend and I was staying at the house. On a Saturday evening I had made plans to hang out with a friend. We went to dinner that evening and I invited him to the house to hang out and kill time before going to the bars. On the drove home I told him the stories about the house... My friend is a nervous type and I was just telling him to freak him out a little.. Just for entertainment. Well, as soon as I opened the door to the house i asked out loud "Are you heeeeeeeeeere?" My friend and I spend a few minutes making snacks and then go into the family room. The t.v. is on, but muted.. Juno is on in the background. I sit on the sofa and my friend sits in an arm chair just a few feet away to my left. Suddenly I hear "Uh huh" directly in my right ear. I look to my left at my friend and his mouth is wide open. He immediately bolts up and starts asking me "What was that? Who was that? We are the only ones here.. The t.v. volume isn't turned up... What was that?!" I remained calm, as I am a very calm person, but I had to admit I was taken aback at what happened and it took a few moments to process. Finally I tell my friend "that must have been the answer to my question when we first walked in." There was an event that preceded that event by a few years where I had asked roughly the same question. Instead of being answered with a voice, my answer came in the form of a light being turned on.

I'm a very logical person. I would like to believe there is a solid, rational explanation for the things I have experienced, but I cannot come up with anything. It's been years since I've experienced anything in the house and as time goes by I do begin to second guess myself, but there is still that lingering belief that I did experience something. It would be easier to dismiss it all had not a friend experienced a disembodied voice that was actually loud enough to hear. I've been tempted to demand a sign... to buy a recording device and ask question.. to video through out the house.. and use powder on a floor... But I've decided against all that. If there truly is a spirit world, I don't want to interfere with it.

So my advice is, if you're inclined to investigate the possibility of your home being haunted, be prepared for what you may stumble across. With my situation, I figure as long as there's no harm to myself or to my family I'd rather just let it be.

RE: Is My House Haunted?

For all sort of "paranormal" stuff I´ve experienced throughout my life, there has always been an explanation. Except for one time I´ve already related in some similar thread a few months back, where I still can´t find a reasonable explanation. I´m not saying there is not one. I´m saying I just haven´t found one. And as a ground rule, I do not believe in ghosts or haunted houses or things that go bump in the night.

This happened in 2010, in Mendoza, Argentina. My family has a big hacienda in the outskirts, sorrunded by wineyards. It was built in 1818 as a SPA but in 1861 with the earthquake that leveled the city, the springs got clogged. So the SPA was bought by some ancestor of mine and turned it into a summer residence for the family. Everything is original. Including the kitchen.

I was spending the weekend there with my cousin and we were in the kitchen and went through a door that led to a patio to pick some logs we needed for the fireplace. There was no wind. No breeze, the door was made of wood and humidity had expanded it to the point we could only open it to where only him and I could squeeze through. The door was really stuck.

Here´s the weird stuff. When we were coming back, I reached for the door and as soon as I was about to go through, it slammed shut. Just like that. It was previously stuck. But it just slammed shut.

It took us a while for my cousin and I to open it again, and we were, frankly white as sheets untli we reached the place where his wife was. He later told me that strange things and noises occur in that place, but never something like that. He was really scared. I truly wasn´t. I was intrigued but not scared. What can I say? I´m sure there is an explanation. Some internal draft, perhaps. I just sincerely can´t believe that some spirit from the 1800s did not want us in its kitchen.

As fro the OP

All sorts of rodents and other animals go through attics. And they can be very noisy. You´d be surprised.

There are all sorts of explanations fro that.

Quoting baexecutive (Thread starter):

Electric power grid imbalances can cause that.

Quoting baexecutive (Thread starter):

Do you live close to a source that would generate heavy ground vibrations, like a railroad or a power station? A big manufacturng plant?

Quoting baexecutive (Thread starter):
Tonight I noticed a strange perfume smell in the hall.

You´d be surprised how different aromas can be perceived more intensely at night than during the day.

Quoting baexecutive (Thread starter):
I have been waking up feeling drained of energy, like I've been restless all night.

That, you should talk to your doctor about.

The other things you mention, well, I can´t really provide a quick answer, your partner in the shower, for example. Buti´m sure there are no ghosts in your house.

Hi!

I'm not sure about your house being haunted but reading Michael Crichton's excellent book travels got me quite interestedin the paranormal and made me think that maybe there was something to it. I definitely believe in spoon bending though but don't know how it works. Michael Crichton talked about spoon bending parties so I tried it at home a couple of times and it works. The spoon goes from normal to soft like putty and then you can twist and bend it out of shape easily.

Anyway I wouldn't like to live in a house thinking it's haunted. It would freak me out!

Many thanks.

Sounds like it is haunted. Maybe that's why it was up for sale.

The house I was brought up in was haunted. From what I've read ghosts seem to have consciousness. Why don't you talk to it and tell it to go away?

There's a house near me that is known to be haunted and it's always up for sale.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I am not sure it is haunted but some places can be full of bad vibes/energies - maybe there was a murder, interpersonal fighting, people getting beaten up, harm done to small children... or who knows what else.

Some houses or cities fit us better than others. You must be in a place that is definitely not right for you. If you haven't bought the place I would give my notice to the owner and move out to somewhere else where you feel that the vibes are better and more suitable.

You cannot keep living like this in a place that brings you worry all the time.

That the house was thought to be "haunted" is one possibility, in which case BAexecutive may have gotten a really good deal on the house.

If no other explanation can be found for the phenomena BAexecutive has experienced then talking to the entity couldn't hurt, but when in the history of paranormal phenomena has telling a spirit "go away" worked out well? My suggestion, barring more conventional explanations of the events, is to aim for peaceful coexistence with the spirit in the house.

I agree with that. There is an area that I drive through on a near daily basis and every time I drive through it I have a heightened sense of alertness.. The energy seems definitely off from the other stretches of the road. This portion of the road is very curvy and uninhabited. It just so happens there's been numerous car accidents involving fatalities on this stretch. This is probably why I feel 'off' every time I drive through the area. Also, about 8 years ago, a woman was murdered in a house at the end of the stretch, which exacerbates the feelings of unease.

The land my parents home is on has been in my family for quite a few years. To my knowledge, there's never been any deaths on the property. However, the town is an old coal mining town with a tumultuous past.

This could be the case with your house. Negative things could have taken place in the home or the property the home was built on which project a sense of unease onto you and your partner. Ask your neighbors about the history of the home. Your town hall should have records of the home and property. You could also locate a local historian and ask them about the area.

Do you drink alcohol? Sometimes large consumption of alcohol can cause restless sleeping patterns and/or distort the brain's ability to comprehend certain events that have very simple explanations.

Some of those things are just normal wear and tear or bad mattress or drafts. I have lived in two haunted houses. One had coffee cups moving from shelf to shelf, books moving, things falling in the attic when there was no way to get to the attic for either us or animals, French doors opening and closing when I am the only one in the house not moving.

You apply a force to a spoon. As such, it bends. I've done it myself. The cheaper the spoon, the better.

I think it'd be interesting to be a ghost and haunt people. Must be so fun... But all the ghost shows make it look so bad.

You guys should know that almost no legitimate paranormal investigator charges for an investigation...hence it's a hobby, not a career. At most, they might ask for assistance with travel expenses if they have to travel a long distance, but even then, that's not certain.

We have had an mortality organization some houses from mine away, but I dont have some strange things like that, but I've heard that the ones that live now in the house have had some very weird stuff.. So maybe there is also something like a dark force over the house..

The house I moved into with my family when I was 5 and lived there for about 12 years.. well when we bought the house, we were told that the previous owner was a family with a husband and wife and two kids.. the husband had been travelling to Africa on a business trip, but had never returned and was presumed to have been killed.

My sister is positive she has seen 'ghost's in the house whatever that means, but I've never seen anything and don't really believe in that kind of stuff either before I see it with my own eyes.

No. likely not. The brain subconscious automatically follows the direction of your thoughts, so that if your conscious mind starts to think something like "this house is haunted" your brain will automatically start processing any data that justifies, categorizes that perception in accordance to that paradigm.

Of course it also works in reverse, so If you don't believe in ghosts, or believe there are only rational answers for these things then your brain will only process/tell your ears/smell/eyes data that justifies that paradigm as well.

Remember the brain works this way, even if it is practically instantaneous.
Light to retina/vibration to eardrum ---> Sensitive part of subconscious brain processes and categorizes based on previous knowledge/experience --->> Brain tells eyes/ears what they are seeing ----> your body and conscious brain responds to the brain response sent from the subconscious

Exactly. Mischievous-type stuff is happening - upside-down nametags, windows opening... it's not like the walls are bleeding or anything like that.

Maybe this ghost is good company. "Telling it to go away" is just plain inhospitable.

Instead, take advantage of the situation. Tell it to clean the bathroom or mop the kitchen floor. Have it make itself useful.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.

Do you live in an earthquake prone area? Small earthquakes can make things go "bump" in the night. Piezoelectric effects at fault zones can cause lights and other phenemona.

It's amazing the sounds that water can make. In high school, a couple friends and I went into this old abandoned building (I think it was some sort of railroad maintenance building or something - it was gigantic). You pass by this door leading to a small room, and it literally sounds like someone is typing on a typewriter in there. Freaky!

Maybe a sprinkling of Holy water might do the trick too. I know vampires don't like it.

That presumes that the spirit, if there is one, was in life both Christian and religious. The UK has a history of human inhabitation that far predates the arrival of Christianity, so the spirit, if there is one, could just as easily have been a Druid, Pagan, or pre-Christian Roman when it was alive and thus would be immune to or possibly even enraged by Christian banishing methods.

I moved into a new house back in February and from day one the banging started.

The thuds come when I'm downstairs and it's right below where the attic door is, I've been up there and it's empty. A number of things have been happening...

I meant to ask this earlier: Is the house "fully detached", or does it share a common wall with the house next door? If it does share a common wall with another house, does said wall extend all the way up through the attic? If not, your next-door neighbors might be up to some mischief.

I do like a good paranormal/haunting story...

One thing I have been told is. If you believe your house is haunted, DO NOT get the house blessed by a priest/vicar etc.
Apparently is the equivalent of going up to a hibernating grizzly bear and smacking him over the head with a shovel.

He ain't gonna be happy!

In rural Lincolnshire where I live, there are supposedly a few haunted houses. There is one house that always goes up for sale every 6-8 months, apart from one time, where the house was sold, the new people moved in and within 5 weeks it was back up for sale again.

That can be the case, if dealing with the demonic, which is a horse of a different color. In that case, you'd need to try to get an exorcism. From what the IP stated, it doesn't sound demonic.

For a normal run of the mill haunting (if there is such a thing), having the house blessed can be helpful. We've had our house blessed twice - once when we moved in just for luck, and again after we had some paranormal activity - and it's been fine.

Has anyone in else in the family experienced these besides you?

You cannot keep living like this in a place that brings you worry all the time.

True dat!

You guys should know that almost no legitimate paranormal investigator charges for an investigation...hence it's a hobby, not a career. At most, they might ask for assistance with travel expenses if they have to travel a long distance,

That is exactly what my $1,299.99 was to cover - travel expenses. However, whereas dc9northwest was going to cross the pond on a business class fare, I decided to go Y+ and pass the savings along to my customer.

Good to see you guys make this somewhat av related

Honestly, as someone alluded to above, hauntings and the paranormal I feel are somewhat related to what you are willing to allow your brain to believe.

Ghosts and paranormal activity are the work of fiction. They do not exist.

Any scientific proof on that?
