China Indicts Bo's Wife For Murder

Fri Jul 27, 2012 2:13 pm

Should be very interesting to see how this plays out in the courts and in the media.

Quote:

China will try Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai, on charges of murdering a British man, state media said on Thursday in the latest turn in a scandal that has rocked the government in Beijing and could bring Gu the death penalty.

The contentious dismissal of Bo has already shaken the Communist Party's looming once-in-a-decade succession, and now Gu and family aide Zhang Xiaojun will be prosecuted for allegedly poisoning businessman Neil Heywood last year over "conflict of economic interests", the official Xinhua news agency said.

"The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial," said the Xinhua report summarizing the indictment. "Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide."

Agreed. Very embarrassing for the Communist Party already, since they declared that Neil Heywood's death wasn't suspicious and then cremated the body without his family's permission. It certainly seems that they tried to cover it up.

Over the last 10 or so years, the Chinese press has (been guided to) discuss political corruption for the first time. Everyone in China knows it is a major problem. China gov faces a revolution someday unless it controls political corruption. Propaganda ministers see it as necessary to tell this story. That can have multiple meanings, but there it is.

To tell it a certain way...

It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to kill two birds with that stone. Oust an embarrassing political figure and show the increasingly upset population they're dealing with corrupt politicians. They might even ease whatever diplomatic tensions where created by this murder.

Either way, this is a sign of changing times. In older times it would have been dealt with without anything leaking to the press.

Indeed, and it will be interesting to see in time if this was wise or not.

I suppose they could hardly keep it quiet, but it seems to me it will get very loud.

They simply intend to burry Bo Xilai and his family. Sounds as an upcoming political earthquake in China, especially following the news that China ranks at the top of the countries whose funds are running out of the county in billions of dollars to off-shore location, reflecting the astronomical proportions of corruption that China suffers from.
