Unexpected 2014 Mazda6 Wagon Unveiled

Fri Aug 03, 2012 2:27 am

The brand new 2014 Mazda "Mazda6" model makes its official world debut at the opening of the 2012 Moscow Auto Show later in August. However, the production of the car has already begun this week at Mazda’s assembly plant in Japan. The very first example to roll off that assembly line was a complete surprise to the automotive press and auto analysts; it was a Mazda6 Wagon, a bright red one to boot. Obviously, Mazda wants to put some "zoom zoom" back into the mid-sized wagon market, and it's doing it with a stylish sporting wagon.

2013 Mazda 6 Sedan (concept)

Unlike the outgoing Mazda6, which in U.S. trim was built at a Ford plant in Michigan, the new-generation 2014 model will be built exclusively at the Hofu plant in Japan. It will be introduced in Europe and Japan before the end of the year, followed by other international markets - starting with the U.S.A. - early in 2013.

Mazda says it expects to build up to 120,000 units annually of the 6 model line-up. So far only the sedan has been confirmed for sale in the U.S., though given the styling of the new 6 wagon, I think it would sell well against the current Subaru Legacy wagon variants. Mazda is yet to announce whether it plans to build any other bodystyles as a five-door hatch version was offered with the previous generation.

Now if Ford would only sell us Americans a Fusion (nee Mondeo) wagon.... and if GM would sell us a wagon variant of the Buick Regal (nee Insignia).....

Not bad looking! The grille is a little oversized but I could get used to that. At least the rear quarter window is more fluid and not that in vogue reverse angle which makes a car look fat and is so outdated at least in my opinion. Are the drive trains FWD/AWD or RWD/AWD?

I'm sorry that I have to repeat it again, but there is a world beyond the North American shores. And in this world the station wagon isn't dead. So the wagon version of Mazda 6 is not all that unexpected as it may seem from here.

Now all we need is the 2.3L DISI from the MS6 and MS3 and we're golden!

I really, really, really hope Mazda makes a Mazdaspeed6 for this generation. If Ford can get 330HP out of their 2.3L Ecoboost (a derivative of Mazda's 2.3L DISI), I'm sure Mazda can get some more oomph out of theirs.

The MS6 was one of the best cars in its market. A good new one could outperform the M3, RS4, or C63AMG.

No one is surprised that there is a station wagon version, the current Mazda6 can be had in a station wagon overseas already. The surprise was that the production version was unexpectedly shown (to the press rather than just a dealer meeting or something) in a rather low key event. Especially since Mazda had actually yet to shown any wagon concept or anything like that (only the sedan concept and teaser shots)

Seeing the interiors of late model Mazdas, This won't hold a candle against the Golf Sportwagen ( Jetta Sportwagen in the USA), also the level of sophistication of the german car is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the Mazda. I have a Sportwagen and a Mazda 5 with all the trim levels on both and the VW is so superior even my wife likes the Golf as a long distance tourer against the Mazda. And the Mazda was 500 USD more expensive!!!. Oh! Wait VW will kill the Sportwagen next year... both in Gas and diesel versions.... so I guess Northamerica will still be in the doldrums in the wagon department ...too bad those are the best cars .... guess Ill have to save my money for a Quattro Wagon....

That actually isnt that bad looking of a car, but I think a station wagon version would not look as good as the sedan version
