Favourite Police Cars From Around The World...

Fri Aug 03, 2012 10:15 pm

I decided to make a random thread as I am bored on a Friday night. What in your opinion is the best looking police cars from around the world? Without being biased, I think the British BMWs look great:

Also love the Subarus!

Anyone else got any suggestions?

We have some pretty cool looking cop cars around here. This one is specifically for finding unregistered and stolen vehicles in a few second, something I thought all cop cars could do.

When looking for nice cars, look towards Italy....

The Polizia had two of these Lamborghini Gallardos. Sadly one has since been written off.

Good news from the State of Michigan is that they will be getting a lot more bubbles on the road soon. They have an academy going on right now with 80ish trooper recruits and another starting this fall. Catching up on the huge shortage of troopers.

Cars like these have been withdrawn from use in Croatia (where this was taken) 20 years ago, after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. A couple of Zastava 750/850s, Zastava 101/128s and Yugos are still kept in old Yugoslav colors by private individuals, while nowadays the police use mostly (boring) VW group vehicles; Škoda Octavias and a few old Golf Mk. IVs as standard cruisers, while unmarked Škoda Superbs and VW Passats are used as highway interceptors. Apart from these, the police use Mercedes Vito and Sprinter vans, Land Rover Defenders, a few Mercedes G wagons - and even a Smart (which inevitably provokes laughter from onlookers  ).

Then:

You might be able to outrun the car, but you won´t be able to outrun Mr. Marconi´s invention and there are always plenty of cop cars around in Berlin to cut off a fugitive. Plus, in then end you can´t outrun Messiers Heckler & Koch´s products.

I still remember the old dark blue police cars from the late 1960s / early 1970s.    They only became green in the mid 1970s, with the introduction of the khaki / green uniforms. Now, due to an EU rule, that the colour of police uniforms and vehicles should be the same all over the EU, they go back to blue, though with regional variations. Hamburg police e.g. wear octagonal hats copied from the NYPD. [

Michigan state police.
I like that they still use the gumball machine single siren light on top.

The main reason why Michigan still uses the single gumball setup was due to the fact that the various and sundry lightbars available create enough drag to knock off 5 mph from a vehicle's top speed.

Flush-mounted roof-lights as well as lights in the grilles have been used by other police agencies to address any speed drag-related issues associated w/the use of multiple lights.

I guess it was only a matter of time that the use of the LED gumball would become available. Kind of like retrofitting an older style traffic signal w/LED lights.

IIRC, CT State Police also still uses the hood-mounted STATE STOP POLICE signs shown on the Michigan cars for their vehicles (which have no distinct livery scheme).

Saw that Challenger police vehicle pic on a car-related web forum. Nice looking and probably a sweet ride but not practical for normal police pursuit duties. One reason why official Mustang and Camaro police packages went away was because as fast as those vehicles were; one needed two vehicles on the scene if a suspect needed to be transported. Whereas with a poilice sedan or SUV; one only needs to use one vehicle for the task.

Once the B-bodied Caprice and Crown Vic started closing the gap and improving their performance from the doldrum 80s; demand for police pony cars dropped like a stone.

I have to ask: assuming that pic is not a vintage photo; is that one pictures and others like it actually used for police duties? For a small police car, it's not too shabby looking.

It wasn't just a performance thing with the Mustang and Camaro, but a fuel issue. The pony cars offered more comfort, safety, and storage space than a motorcycle but used far less fuel than full size cars.

It wasn't just a performance thing with the Mustang and Camaro, but a fuel issue. The pony cars offered more comfort, safety, and storage space than a motorcycle but used far less fuel than full size cars.

Compared to the pre-downsized 400+ cid-powered full-sizes of the mid-70s, yes; compared to their downsized successors, not as much as one would think. While I personally, have referred to police pony cars as enclosed motorcycles; let's be clear here, these cars were never intended nor planned to be motorcycle replacements.

While you are correct in that fuel consumption (mainly CAFE laws) played a role in pony police cars coming to be. The reasons for pursuing this endeavor were clearly performance-based. CHP's less than positive performance experiences w/their 318-powered 1980 Dodge St. Regis' (other states (CARB back then only applied to just one state) still allowed the 360-equipped models to be sold/used) was indeed one of the driving forces behind their experimenting w/GM's F-bodied Camaro and the Fox-based Mustangs for future usage as Enforcement-Class vehicles. The downsized sedans, while returning better fuel economy than their larger predecessors, were just too underpowered for many police pursuits and the ever-tightening CAFE standards (at the time) further restricted the availability of larger engines and threatened the very existence of these vehicles (the RWD full-sizes) down the road (little did they know what would happen later).

The timing of CHP's early pony police car bids coupled with the Mustang's lower price tag, and availability of its HO 5.0/302 V8 at the time began a new era for police cars.

While many agencies were impressed with the Mustang and Camaro police packages (and indeed used them); the majority of them still preferred to the capacity & practicality of (mostly full-size) sedans even if it meant a minor compromise in performance. The Fox-bodied mid-size '83-'86 LTDs allowed for some balance between performance and space but it still fell short in the capacity and utility department. Many cops referred to the "Baby LTD" as a Mustang w/4-doors.

Once CAFE standards leveled off (and even dropped a tad for 2 to 3 years) during the late 80s, both Ford and GM decided to go ahead and upgrade their then-long-neglected RWD full-sizes and offer more powerful engines by the early 90s.

Most agencies essentially stated, "Give us a sedan capable of topping at least 130 and we won't have a need for an additional Mustang or Camaro."
- Exerpt from a 1997 Car & Driver article testing a 1997 CVPI.

Fast-forward to today: many agencies (including CHP and the Massachusetts State Police as examples) are now opting for pursuit-rated SUVs (both have recently chosen Ford's Utility Interceptor (UI aka the Explorer)) because they still want space and capacity even if it means these vehicles are slightly slower than the current crop of police sedans. To add, CHP recently imposed a minimum payload requirement for their Enforcement Class vehicles that essentially makes all current police sedan models on the market ineligible. The Chevy's 2WD Tahoe PPV and Ford's UI are the only vehicles that makes CHP's payload cut. The current Special Service package of Ford's Expedition isn't pursuit-rated; so therefore, it would not be eligible.

These are the only cop cars we have around here.

Ironically, you showed a photograph of a Hamburg Passat B6 with xenon headlights and 17-inch alloys, which weren’t a part of the package the NRW police ordered from VW (they were Trendline standard version with 16-inch steel rims and no xenon).

The most of the cars in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) look like this:

This blue scheme has been phasing out the older green scheme of the same type of cars:

Whereas the facelift of these Passats (Passat “B7”) has been introduced on the streets a couple of weeks ago, the police bought 2000 copies, here are some of them:

The older vehicles with the new, blue scheme, are my favourite. Slick cars which drive good and have good engines, the DSG-transmission they have I dislike very much though (first hand, my car has the identical engine and transmission).
