Women-Only City To Be Built In Saudi Arabia

Fri Aug 10, 2012 4:56 pm

No men allowed! Only women.

I wonder if Saudi Arabia will agree to issuing visas for single foreign women travelling alone who have an interest for this new city and wish to go there to visit... provided they agree to the local dress code?

No man’s land: Women-only city planned for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is to build a new city exclusively for women. The Gulf kingdom is working on the narrow junction between strict Sharia law and the aspirations of active females who wish to pursue their own careers.
...
The ambitious mono-city is now being designed with construction to begin next year. The municipality in the Eastern city of Hafuf is expected to attract 500 million riyals (US$133 million) in investments and it will create around 5,000 jobs in the textiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing industries. There will be women-run firms and production lines for women.

I think that place will be paradise, three weeks out of the month!

That fourth week will be sheer hell!

I hope the chocolate shops will be able to deal with the surge!

Doesn't the word "Haluf" in Arabic translate into "pig"?
I was always told that calling someone with the name "Haluf" was the ultimate insult in Arabic.

I find this idea of an all-woman city extremely interesting. I would certainly like to see it with my own eyes after it comes to life.

Just when you thought there was some progress from Saudi Arabia in the field of women's rights when they actually sent a female athlete to the Olympics, they go and pull this nonsense.

I think its progress. It's a mix between the conservative traditions with contemporary movements for women's rights. A city where women will be able to be their own boss, work, get an education, play sports...all away from the eyes of men who "are tempted to do things to them".

The true progress will come when traditions are observed only in private life and do not interfere with everyday life.

Quite the reverse. It provides an excuse to continue the current misogynistic practices everywhere else in the country, because one can point to this city and say "if women really want more equality and rights, they can just move there, we don't really have to change the way we do things".

Separate is not equal. If you have to go to a specific city to have rights, you don't have those rights.

Completely agree. This is a horrible "solution" but it is a great sign that things are happening. They would never suggest something like this if it wasn't because pressure is building.

I would consider it apartheid if women are FORCED to live there and subject to bad living conditions, yet it's only a place where women can choose to go if they want. Saudi Arabia is already an apartheid place where women can't go where men are and are basically a possession, not human beings. At least this city is the kingdom's way of making that "second class citizenship" more tolerable. It's wrong, but it's their way of life.

Will women be allowed to drive in this Shangri-La? Otherwise without the ubiquitous Bengali taxi driver how are these ladies going to get to work at these fabulous jobs?

I'm waiting to hear the religious leader who is going to freak out about this because it will encourage lesbianism without a man to keep the woman on the straight and narrow and protect them from all the evils of the liberal Western world.

I wonder if the women will have a semi-normal life in such a city or will they need to be completely covered and unable to do things men are able to do such as drive. Being Saudi-Arabia I wouldn't hold my breath....

Europe has had "women only" cities for centuries. They are called "nunneries".

On a more serious note, is what is being planned an actual city where people live or is it merely an industrial/ commercial centre where women will commute to work? The details in the report are unclear.

Quote:
The new plan is to combine women’s desire to work in the modern age and provide a job environment that would go hand-in-hand with the country’s Sharia law.

The emphasis here appears to be on work rather than living.

Quoting Airstud (Reply 18):

Last September, King Abdullah announced that women will be able to vote and run in the 2015 local elections, and be appointed to the Consultative Assembly.

As long as there are so many things in my own country so "screwed up", I hardly feel qualified to tell the Saudi's how to run their country! If the Saudi ladies are comfortably with it, I'm tickled pink !

Of course they're not forced to go there. They only have to go if they don't want to be treated as property, if they don't want to be subject to the every whim of their husband, if they want to be able to run a business, to do something meaningful with their lives, etc.

It's de facto apartheid.

Question: would the hijab be required? I don't think it'd be needed, because who would they be enticing sans cover? Lesbians?

Another question: sooooo no visitors by guys interested in multicultural females?        Not even a one-week vacay stay?

That would put them within 130 years of the West, so I guess it's an improvement.

Give me the reason why should KSA follow the West in everything? Can women go to church without covering there hair, or wearing a short skirt? Do i want the sexual freedom if you can call it that with all the negative side effects like AIDS to spread in the country? Ok so we are 130 years behind the west. Big deal

Because the women of the KSA are human beings, and they deserve the rights of human beings. That means having autonomy from their husbands, being able to drive, being able to own businesses, etc. There's plenty of room for cultural differences in there.

Women going to church services without covering their hair? Most always, including ultra-conservative churches.
Women going to church services wearing short skirts? I have seen it many times, wearing shorts even.

This is not the Europe of the 1950s anymore.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Without getting too far off topic, that is already a problem in Saudi Arabia, brought in by guest workers but now spreading.

If men have the freedom to have sex with as many women as they want to, then they can spread sex to their wives too. So it is not like only women are carriers of AIDS virus. promiscuous men too spread it.

You don't need to cover your hair to go into a church and neither should you feel the need to . The short skirts and appropriate attire I will concede on . Some of the things that people wear to church these days even for funerals is a disgrace.

Sadly its a ticking time bomb for the Kingdom and not only KSA. Alot of Arab Men also engage in Male-Male sex then go home to their wives often using no protection . Its all underground in these countries so harder to monitor who is being infected.

As for the Women only city I dont have an issue with it . Maybe alot of Women will want to be living in there.

At least they can maybe wear their nail polish

For the exception of driving, women in KSA have much more freedom than you want to believe. They do own there own businesses, in a matter of fact 3 out of the richest 10 people in Saudi is a woman.
Cultural differences do exist between us and the west but i see nothing wrong with that, i will never think of coming to the USA and try to change the way you live so i expect the same from others.

I give you a lot of respect but this is a little outdated: 1) not many people are going to church anymore 2) the people that do have this "dress to impress" thing going on so the girls are usually dressed in something that they would probably wear to a sunday brunch with a bunch of men. Just sayin'

AIDS is beginning to be corralled in the country, with the majority of the people who have aids being prostitutes and people that nobody should be having sex with anyway.
