Funny ....

The British are not happy about this

I'm sure it's just amother way of many ways one can present such a statistic though. It's not like the medals were given out to the EU as organisation.

and all of a sudden, Norway as a non mmber is alot higher on the table ...  Smile

The table is wrong NZ has 6 gold medals and 2 silver, not 5 gold, 3 silver.

Who cares if some numbnut in the EU headquarters shooots off his mouth? Doesn´t he have anything better to do? After all the Olympic games are still a competition between individual athletes and not nations.

I think the smilies give away the lack of seriousness with this.

This is just a random company that is used as an EU propaganda machine, floating the idea of a unified EU in future Olympics because then the EU would completely dominate. I think some in the EU are jealous that the massive and diverse China and US are able to compete in the Olympics (and others things such as GDP) under one flag while Europeans 'have' to compete for their home countries despite North Dakotans to Rhode Islanders and Tibetans to Guandongans(?) being more different to each other than some country pairs in the EU.

The EU didn't even field a team. It is quite funny though. Notice the way they spell Qatar? - with a K.

As you say, you can present statistics any way one likes. Not surprising the readers of the Daily Express would be choking on their bacon and eggs.

Fortunately this is just a fun presentation by a private marketing and research organisation that has included among its clients various EU and German organisations.

Just a moment, define "British" in this context. The Daily Express (and presumably its readers) possibly. The rest of us really don't care.

If the Russians want to add up the medals won by former CIS countries or Soviet states then they can. If someone wants to add up all the medals won by countries beginning with "A" then they can. I suspect most British people will just roll their eyes and point out that we don't need to play with the numbers (this time, anyway).

Germany and the other european countries aren't listed separately either, of course.

I don't see the problem here – it is perfectly valid to look at things that way as well for perspective, and indeed interesting to see in aggregate. There are also lists comparing the continents to each other (including those which don't have any supranational political structures) or lists showing wins distributed among US or german regional states.

All these lists are perfectly valid (if done correctly) and none of them take anything away from the official tally according to the officially participating NOCs.

They should be more concerned that the Euro Zone nations are collectively on the hook for the bonds that the PIGS sell.

The EU as a single country wouldn't get the same number of medals as a lot of European athletes wouldn't have qualified. On the other hand such a massive change would probably need a change of the IOC rules anyway, and maybe a change in the sports too, as cycling for example would be decimated.

They'd only have one EU team in team competitions. For instance in Men's Hanball, EU countries won 2 of 3 medals. If they all competed as the EU, that would be a max of 1 medal. Same goes for Men's & Women's Field Hockey.

All in all a meaningless summation of medals that doesn't really reflect reality.

A "private" marketing organization whose objective is to help educate people and businesses about the Euro. How many non-government clients do you reckon they have, with a mission statement like that? This is nothing more than an arm of the EU propaganda machine.
