Let's Hear Some Campfire Experiences!

Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:36 am

If you're like me, one of my highlights of going on a camping trip is chatting around the fire at night. Let's hear about some of your experiences!

Most of my camping trips take place at rocket launch events...

http://www.oregonrocketry.com/

Our club holds weekend launch events, usually once a month, May-October. Everyone camps on site and spends the weekend flying big and small rockets. (Click the link for more info on what we do.) In the evenings, many people head over to the community firepit to chat, drink, and hang out. Some nights we are still out there until 2:00 AM.

The last event I went to (late June) we talked about rockets, told inappropriate jokes (mostly all guys out there, evidently), and burned all kinds of weird stuff in the fire, to name just a few. Which leads me to my next topic...

Burning/melting crazy stuff in the campfire has always been a ton of fun for me. Believe me, that community firepit at our launch site has seen a lot... a LOT of wild and weird stuff. I mean, we all love flying rockets, so of course we love fire! Here are some examples of stuff I've seen go into our campfire...

Big cardboard boxes
Starter fluid (of course we always use more than we really need to  )
Pop cans (aluminum)
Beer bottles/liquor bottles (glass)
Plastic cups
And last, but not least...

Rocket propellant. And lots of it.

People in our club regularly have extra propellant they don't need. Mostly, these are the people who make their own experimental motors - they always have extra pieces, scraps, etc, of propellant from motors they've built. One time, there was a big (5 or so inch diameter) experimental motor that catastrophically failed on the launch pad. But only half of the motor actually lit... Guess where the other half went!

There is also one guy in particular who builds a LOT of experimental motors. Almost every launch he has some leftover propellent he brings over to the fire. Pretty much everybody there knows that when this guy says "stand back"... That means stand WAY back. Last launch I went to he said that very thing, everyone moved their chairs a good ways back, and then he threw a BIG plastic bag full of propellant shavings into the fire...

All I remember was a huge, white fireball, which probably could be seen for miles around...

So... Let's hear some of your campfire experiences!

:D

Now that's a classic, isn't it?

There's also a cowboy's experience somewhere... Did that involve a camp fire? I'm guessing it did.

Well, the girl who had the biggest boobies I ever got my hands on was sat next to a campfire...

Yeah, I felt like a man whore the next day, while nursing my hangover...

And she was a co-worker of my mother's which ensured my mom heard all about it through the gossip network...

Wish that all never happened...

Dead Palm Frawns. Definetly a Florida thing or I guess a southern coastal state thing but down here we have huge ones and lots of them. Start a large camp fire and those things light up in a second and last few a few more but it's like castaway swinging them around. Very safe I know.

Throwing a bag of marshmallows is pretty cool too in a fire.

On a youth group retreat weekend back in 1974, during one of our campfires I let my fingers to the walking to my then girlfriend's you know where area! The outcome, she was so wet, I could have doused that campfire. Sorry if I was a wee bit crude.

Both of those things sound pretty cool!
