How Did You Propose?

Sun Aug 19, 2012 8:31 am

There have been quite a few stories lately about people coming up with different ways of asking the question so how did you guys propose?

I'm not married and don't see it on the horizon for a long time, but if it ever happens I'm not going to propose. I think its outdated and emasculating. Why should I have to get down on a knee and "beg." Plus, I think choosing a ring without imput from the person that's going to wear it forever is asking for trouble.

We'd talk about getting married and decide if its the right time, etc and do everything together.

I saw a guy get shot down by his fiance at a basketball game once. It was classic!

Hi!

I'm not married also so can't really answer. I once suggested marriage to my ex-girlfriend and she looked genuinely touched. It didn't stop her sleeping around though!

Many thanks.

When I was proposed to it went like this:

I was hired with the airline after dating Matt for about 5 months. Matt had never even stepped foot on an aircraft before, nor left the tri-state region before. So, when I told him I would have to go down to the Airbus Facility in Miami for training for a while, he was fascinated. He also didn't know what to do with himself since he had never experienced someone that could be "called away on a whim" like that before, especially to a party place like Miami. Well I got back from my training and he picked me up at the airport and drove me back to his place. He said he knew I was tired of eating out and he made me a nice home-cooked meal (I was excited too). We pulled into the parking garage, backed into a spot, and he went to grab my luggage while I was getting out and he said "oh, I forgot my sunglasses in the glove compartment, can you grab them for me?". I opened the glove compartment and out rolled this scrolled up piece of paper with a heartwarming note of how much he missed me and loved me and whatnot, and attached to the scroll, in the glove box, was the box with my ring in it. When I turned around, he was on one knee next to me and he asked me to be with him always. Now obviously, this was years ago so we couldn't get married in NY, but it meant so much that someone would want me in their life like that and wear a ring to symbolize it.

That Christmas I gave him his ring. While we were having Christmas Morning breakfast in bed, I pointed out that I never noticed a particular ornament on the tree in the bedroom before, where did it come from? (It was a fake cut crystal one that opened up to reveal the ring). He said he forgot and went to look at it, saw it looked "different" opened it and damn near dropped his Christmas Morning cocoa on the bedspread LOL.

Alas, 5 years after he asked me, we un-exchanged our rings, had champagne and toasted to new beginnings for us both. That was almost 3 years ago now, my how time flew by. A few weeks ago he proposed to his new boyfriend at a house party he was having....

The way it used to go in my home town is: You're gonna have a what???

Nowadays, they don't bother with the wedding....

I gues my favorite of the times I´ve proposed, I went to a very nice restaurant and asked to talk to the manager early in the afternoon. I explained that I was going to propose and gave him a bouquet of flowers I had bought and chose a bottle of champagne. I told him that we would arrive at a certain time and have dinner and that when we ordered dessert, that was the signal for him to get the flowers and the champagne, but to wait until she put the ring on.

So we had dinner, asked for dessert, the manager was a bunch of nerves, honestly and I just put the ring on the table and pushed it slightly towards her and asked her if she wanted to marry me. No kneeling or stuff like that. She said yes, very exictedly, tears everywhere, (hers) and then the flowers and the champagne arrived.

Along with the congratulations of all the staff and the other diners in the surrounding tables which was a pleasant surprise.

We never did get married though.

You don't pick a wedding ring without the other partner. That's the engagement ring

It's not really begging - you are asking a question, and if you are begging then you are doing it wrong

"So, when it becomes legal, we should get married."

"Yeah."

Done.

Mine wasn't all that spectacular really, but I was so nervous when I was down on my knee, I put the ring on her right hand!    That was 13 years ago.

I've never proposed but when I was student teaching my head band director told me his first proposal story. He was the head drum major of the Ole Miss (University of Mississippi) band and he proposed to his girlfriend at an Ole Miss football game--they were up on the jumbotron and everything. She didn't know he was going to do that and she told him "I'm just not ready yet." Ouch. He later re-proposed in a much less public manner and she accepted.

Did it on a dinner train through Bardstown, KY right before dessert was served. She thought I was giving her a birthday/college graduation gift. When she opened the box, there was a Brides magazine in it. She looked at me, with a confused look and then looked doewn at my hand, where I was holding the ring.

That was a little over 16 years ago.

Well... is it legal? Prop 8 seems to have as much solidity as the 92 Perot candidacy.

I don't have a TV, but I imagine SNL or MadTV or some such has done a sketch about gay California couples sometimes being faithful and sometimes sleeping around, saying, "What's the big deal? This week, we're not married."

Well, we had to get married kinda quick because I was emigrating to Canada and the only way to get her in was if we were married. I was asked to transfer from London to Vancouver in mid September and I was gone 5 weeks later, so didnt have much time - particularly as I had a business trip to Japan in between and we had quite a long distance relationship too (London / Edinbugh) so couldnt just pop down the road to see each other. 2.5 weeks before I left, I then had to go to Germany for my best friends wedding, I was best man so didnt have a choice. She came down from EDI on the Wednesday night, my parents were away. Eventually got in from LTN around 11pm. I proposed on the couch in my parents living room. Was the best I could figure out in the circumstances as although she came to the wedding with me, we were up at 6am the next morning off to LHR to meet my buddy and then we were seperated most of the time as I was doing prep stuff outside of the actual occasion, then sat on the head table and up front for signing duties during and it lasted 3 days and she flew straight out of FRA to EDI the Sunday evening. She came down again 2 weeks later to say goodbye on my emigration flight, I knew I really wouldnt be in the state of mind for proposing then... I then saw again her once more for a couple of weeks when she came to Canada for the first time ever (already having commited to move to YVR) for xmas before I came back to the UK to get married in March...

Crazy times.

I did it on top of the Empire State Building at night, in hindsight I should have thrown her off it, but it took me 4 yrs to realize that. When we got a divorce I went back to the Empire State Building to throw the ring off it. So I walked up to the spot I proposed, pulled out the ring and I just could not go through with it.................it was not worth getting arrested or hurting someone on the street below  True Story!
