Hard Rock Cafe - Been To Any?

Sun Aug 19, 2012 10:30 am

Hard Rock Cafe

Personally I think it's a cool concept. I always have to visit one if there is one in town. Sometimes to eat, sometimes just to look and buy the T-shirt.

I've Been to:

HRC - Oslo
HRC - New York
HRC - Rio de Janeiro
HRC - Sydney
HRC - Bangkok
HRC - Phuket
HRC - Pattaya
HRC - Paris
HRC - Berlin
HRC - Munich
HRC - Amsterdam

Any place you wish there were one ?

Thought it was strange that there was'nt one in Auckland and that it took such a long time for Brussels to get one ( Opens this year )

They are modestly appealing, nothing special.

Had a friend, consulting gig in Paris for several months. Hard Rock was where he took a lot of meals, so he could avoid French food.

Avoid French food. Really.

Now that I think of it, nothing screams 'the 90s' like Hard Rock Cafe!

They seem to not do too well here. Melbourne closed, and for a while Sydney was going to go (permanently), but they reopened a new one recently. A lot of Hard Rock's have closed, but some of them do quite well.

I haven't kept track of the ones I've been at, but my older sister used to collect shot glasses from them, and she has a lot from all around the world. She didn't go to all of them, a few have been collected for her by friends.

Well, maybe it's just my age, but it seems that was their heyday. I remember the big popularity of t-shirts and sweatshirts from various locations, seemed to be always the 'cool' place to go in a city. Last decade or so it feels like all these image factors have greatly diminished, and the same story with most chains in general. Still not as bad as the Planet Hollywood's fall. Not sure if that really pinpoints anything, but Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood just seem to remind me of the 90's so much.

Methinks he's referring to the revival that bad taste in general went through in the 90's.

I used to work at the one in San Francisco when it was located on Van Ness Bl.
At that time, there were a lot of hot babes that worked there in white miniskirts. Things went downhill when they started hiring male waiters, many with piercings tattoos and dreadlocks.
Today the place isn't anything special. Overpriced, bland food.

Quoting jpetekyxmd80 (Reply 6):
Well, maybe it's just my age

That just about sums it up.
Hard Rock Cafe's heyday was the 1980s.
For some reason today, their restaurants are much bigger and they have more locations but the restaurant it's self isn't anything special.

Quoting sccutler (Reply 2):

Wow, that's nuts.
I did the same thing 3 months ago in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After several failed attempts of finding good Malay food and being burning by a few rip off restaurants, I broke down and went to a Hard Rock Cafe near where I was staying.
Yea, yea I know they have good food there but I didn't have the time to do the research for authentic Malay food because my trip was last minute.

Hard Cafes I've been to:

Los Angeles
Las Vegas
New York

I have quite a few of the obligatory white T shirts and a nice collection of guitar pins.

I have these from more than the ones I have been to though, friends have brought me memorabilia if I remembered to ask them.

There used to be a big one in Cape Town, I believe it was one of the largest (seating capacity) in the world. I remember having a bacon burger there and the patty was actually made from bacon, not the usual beefburger with a slice of bacon on top.

I've been to:
Barcelona
Cape Town
London
Dubai
Sydney
Newport Beach CA, which also had...

I've only been to the one on City Walk here in Orlando. I can't really compare it to other locations as that's the only one I've been to but, I really enjoyed the design and layout of the place. That's usually where I go to eat as well anytime I go to the park and I always seem satisfied with the meal but I have low standards so take that for what its worth haha.

I'm actually wearing a t-shirt I got when i visited the one in the Cayman Islands as I type this. The only other one I've been to is Phoenix and have a sweatshirt from there. Nice collection of memorabilia at the one in PHX, but as some others have said, the food is altogether ordinary.

Their 'memorabilia' is suspect. The Toronto location shows a cherry red Gibson ES-335 that was supposedly played by Alex Lifeson of Rush. I'm a diehard Rush fan and I know of every guitar Alex Lifeson has played throughout his entire career. He has never played that guitar. He has never played a cherry red Gibson ES-335 with dot neck and stop bridge. His have all been tobacco woodgrain sunburst or black and his ES-355 is white and all of them have trapezoid bridges and block inlay frets. I've seen other 'memorabilia' hanging up that isn't even authentic. Just posters that anyone could buy from a record store.
That said, they still have good tartar sauce.

I've just been to the one here in PHX but I have a good friend who works at the one in Roppongi.

My buddy's band played at a battle-of-the-bands at the HRC PHX earlier this year and made it all the way to the regional finals before being cut by some band that sounds like Bieber. Pop music

Manila, Philippines.

It is in the Glorietta Shopping Center in Makati, the financial district of Manila.

I have no idea what people see in Hard Rock cafe these days. I'm actually surprised it is still going.

The last one I went to was in Disneyland Florida, or at least I think it was a Hard Rock. We found the loud music irritating and the staff forcing us to clap our hands or join in the show annoying.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I went to the New York HRC back in the 80s when they were really hot. The line for the T-Shirt store was as long as the one to actually eat. I was on a business trip with another guy and we went there to eat lunch. And to buy both my kids a T-Shirt.

I've also been to the one in LA - not bad, not great.

And have walked by the one in Hong Kong more than a few times.

One interesting point: back in the 80s the store part was one of the highest selling retailers in the country - per square foot. They were blowing Tiffany's away on a per square foot basis.

I have worked before for for company that owned a couple of cafes and a hotel under franchise.

The concept is quite good, and despite the whole "rock" thing being irrelevant in many parts of the world, they have been able to reinvent the concept a little to broaden the appeal.

Even in the US, most true "rockers" are now 40-something with kids and minivans. The "We know who you are" advertising campaign very cleverly played on this concept and positioned HR as an escapism oportunity.

On the operating side, that is where they get lost. There is a lot of inconsistency even within the cafes that they own themselves, (about 70% of them). Especially with food quality. The also need to "regionalise" their menus a little. Even Mcdonalds changes menu items more flexibly than Hard Rock in places like China, Singapore, etc

I went to the one in Macau about 5 weeks ago, and it was good. Food great and they had a 5-piece all girl band that were very good. Too many beers made the ferry trip back to HK a little rough!

Well, outside the US HRC still offers some of the best burgers available, and if it's a burger I'm wanting for it'll quite often be HRC I'm headed to.

Bahrain
Copenhagen
Cologne
Dubai
London
Montreal
Rome

Got t-shirts from all of them, didn't eat at the ones in Rome (now that would have been a crime!) and Montreal. Never trusted the authencity of the tat they've got hanging on the walls much. As in not at all, actually.

Correction folks.
I have not been to the Taipei location. Someone brought it to my attention that the Taipei location closed in 2002.
I was in Taipei earlier this month.
I was at a T.G.I. Friday.
They had so much rock memorabilia and I thought someone stole my record collection and hung it up in the wall. Many of which were rather obscure titles that I thought only I knew about.

Personally I think it's a cool concept. I always have to visit one if there is one in town. Sometimes to eat, sometimes just to look and buy the T-shirt.

I think it's sad to travel to new and different places only to seek out the generic, the familiar and the second hand. I can't think of many places I would be less interested in going, appart from Starbucks. I want to see what the locals consider good for food, drink and ambience and experience that.

I once met a girl that insisted on going to a Jillian's (trendy sports bar chain) in every city she went to and she was insisting that I take her to the one in San Francisco. I had asked her if there was any difference from the Jillian's that she was boasting about in Boston, Chesapeake, VA and LA. She gave me a dumbfounded look.
As far as Kuala Lumpur, it was a last resort and a convenience.

appart from Starbucks.

That's a place I try to avoid. Here in Bangkok, Starbucks is more expensive than in the US.
Coffee starts at $3.15 (USD).
If it's not local street vendor coffee, I go for local chains like Black Canyon Coffee or Mezzo.
They're still cheaper than Starbucks and just is trendy and hip.

The quality of food was great back in 1997 when I worked at the Seattle location, until they changed the menu and lost business company-wide then went back to the original and never really recovered after that.

Where was the original HRC in Seattle? I've been here since 2001 and I don't remember it being here then. They just recently opened another one a block from Pike Place Market.

Exactly what I said: it's one of the worst.

I've been to the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. I went there on Veteran's Day and they served me and hundreds of other high school marching band members breakfast for those who were marching in the parade. It was pretty nice, but I think it's the same as any other restaurant.

There was a Planet Hollywood on 6th and Pike (next to Niketown where the Levi's Store is now) in the mid 90's till it shut down in 2001. The original HRC in Seattle is the one that is open now, the current location is Seattle's first HRC, but is the second theme restaurant with Plane Hollywood being the first (Now closed, like I said)

There was a rumor that the All*Star Cafe was going to open up shop in Seattle next to Safeco Field, where Pyramid Brewery sits now across the street. It was Ken Griffey, Jr's idea to put one there. It never happened.

It was sad to see Planet Hollywood go away in Seattle. A lot of former employees at the Seattle site (including myself who worked there for a year before going to AS) was extremely disappointed in its closing.

I've been to the Hard Rock Cafe in Beijing. Really terrible food, poor service, poor band, and riddled with hookers.

Oh, there is some sort of sushi bar there now. The original stairwell is still there and the restrooms are exactly the same way Planet Hollywood left it.
