An exceptional man, with the exceptional levels of courage needed for that mission.
I remember watching that first step - in Sasebo, Japan. Our ship was there on a bit of R&R + Maintenance and I watched Armstrong's first watch from the TV
on the mess deck. Almost as amazing as the actual walk was the TV
station, who would briefly break away from the moon to show the local people in a movie theater watching the walk live. That day was not just a special day for Americans, it was an amazing day for the world. And people around the world were glued to their TV
I believe that there will be sadness all over this world as the news spreads. So many people are too young to have been able to experience this exception event, but there are enough of os old enough to remember, and to feel a special sadness.
