Computer Problem...help?

Mon Aug 27, 2012 3:39 am

Hey. So I bought a laptop as a means to get by while I send my Acer for repairs under warranty. Now, I'm trying to install Office 2007 and I get:

Error 1606 Could not access network location. %PUBLIC%Desktop

Can anyone help me with this? I've tried the FixIts from Microsoft, I've tried editing the registry (though I can't because I can't fine the folders to do so)...anyone had any trouble with this before?

You don't need to know where the registry is. Just run regedit. I.e. if you're running Windows 7 (or possibly Vista) then click Start and immediately type regedit. For earlier versions click Start then click Run then type regedit.

It's an .EXE and it's not only Office. I've had the problem when installing other programs like Adobe Reader.

I tried this, though not the regedit part. Might have to try it tonight.

Doesn't matter what vendor's software, really. Tags like these are variables used by Windows which point to a location, which means that somehow, your computer came from the factory with that variable corrupted. That web page will fix it for you (Or so it says,) but it's a pretty easy fix if you know the registry.
