Could Chrysler Release A Ram-branded SUV?

Mon Aug 27, 2012 7:46 pm

Now that Ram is its own brand (rather than being a model of Dodge truck), I was thinking, could a Ram-branded SUV be in the works? Perahps Ram can become akin to what GMC is to Chevrolet. However, one issue could be internal competition with Jeep.

What does anyone here think?

Might work well if they can keep the price reasonable.

My son-in-law drives a Pacifica and I became somewhat impressed with it when I used it for a trip to Michigan. I believe that it could be reworked a bit and would do reasonably well in the market.

The Pacifica, one of the earlier Cross-overs aka CUVs, has been out of production for a several years.

What would more likely happen is the Dodge Durango being re-badged as the Ram Durango. Personally, I'm surprised that didn't happen already with all-new 2012 Durango roll-out.

Not with the wave of CUVs becoming the (unfortunate) future. There are already far fewer vehicles in the "true SUV" market than ten years ago, and with increasing fuel efficiency standards, that's not going to change.

Even the latest-generation Durango is now a Cherokee-based unibody.

Maybe when Chrysler/Fiat replaces the current Dodge Journey CUV (station wagon, really), it will be replaced as a Ram model. Personally, I think the Jeep branded (and Fiat platform-based) replacements for the Liberty and Compass models that are coming next year (as a 2014 model, I believe) will actually fill the smaller SUV role for the automaker.

Highly unlikely considering the Dodge Durango is not selling in the numbers they had hoped (People are opting for the Grand Cherokee instead of the Durango if they're buying a Mopar brand.) Rumors are that it may not make it past the current model year and if they do continue the model, the 2013 model year will be the last. With the exception of the Dodge Journey crossover, the SUV/CUV segment in the future will be Jeep's domain in most of the world. 2014 sees the new Cherokee/Liberty (The Liberty name may be dropped in North America in favor of reviving the Cherokee name since the Liberty is sold as the Cherokee elsewhere.) which also replaces the Jeep Patriot, a refreshed Grand Cherokee and the return of the Jeep (Grand) Wagoneer which will essentially replace the Dodge Durango within the Mopar family.

I'm glad true SUVs are losing ground in the mainstream market. 90% of the sales were to people who had no need of a true SUV in the first place when all they needed was a wagon or minivan.

Jeep is supposedly releasing a Durango as the Grand Wagoneer and then they will possibly kill the Durango.

What does it matter to you? If your neighbors want to drive an SUV with the interior room of a small condo that gets five miles to the gallon it isn't your problem or mine. If somebody wants to drive a $50,000 pickup with a built in DVD player for that one Saturday every year to haul a load of mulch to the flowerbed in front of their underwater McMansion, that's their business.

Pickup and SUV sales are still strong, actually.

I drove one last weekend, it's an impressive vehicle let down by a cheapo interior and a horrible gearbox, if Jeep revised the interior and put in a modern 6/7/8 speed auto like the majority oif it rivals it would be a very attractive package in Europe, especially since it's well priced.

Dude, you know that article is 12 years old...they discontinued the Mexican Ramcharger around 2002.

Fortunately the refresh that is suppose to to arrive next year is expected to have 8 speed transmissions across the board. Can't really comment on the interior, I thought it was pretty good considering the car's price.

That's good because the V6 turbodiesel is a good one and it's crying out for a decent transmission.

Compared to XC90, Touraeg, X5, ML, Cayenne, Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Q7 it's a let down, these are it's price competitors in Norway, it does have a nicer interior than the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

I see, here in the US it is much (and in some cases,, MUCH) cheaper than all of those, except maybe the XC90. But the XC90 is what, 10 years old now?

Yup introduced in 2002, generation 2 due in 2014. Volvo are still selling everyone they can make, I personally think it's time is up but people still buy them. A family down the street from my house have just ordered their 3rd XC90. One thing it has in it's favor is a very flexible interior, plus it's still one of the safest SUV's on the road today.

Out of all the cars built in the US today the Grand Cherokee is about the only one I would actually buy, if they fixed the interior and with a new 8 speed auto it would be very attractive.

The next gen Grand Cherokee is slated to get a ZF-based 8 speed gearbox, as eventually all of the Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep vehicles will used either an 8-speed or 9-speed gearbox designed by and licensed from ZF.

Hopefully the interior will get better, as I know with the Chrysler 200 and 300, they've improved the interior over previous model years. I've got a 2003 Dodge Stratus and the interior is pretty cheap and some plastic pieces are easily cracked. It was even worse the last few years of ownership under Daimler, as they started cutting corners as well as quality on most interiors.

I know and, after over a week in one I kinda regret it. It was the most basic model, but did a pretty good job of hauling a lot of stuff & keeping us comfortable. I'll be doing the trip again in a couple of weeks and will do another swap with the con-in-law.

The CUV (to me) is nothing more than a station wagon that has been raised up so you sit higher. (Must admit that I learned to drive on a '55 Pontiac station wagon and still have a fondness for them).

The Pacifica was very easy to get in and out of - a nice feature these days. When I was young I had no problems with getting in and out of my father's TR-3, but that was half a century ago. Now that comfortable design is important.

Have you driven the Journey? It's a pretty nice ride and similar in size to the Pacifica.

The Pacifica was slightly ahead of its time, arriving a little too early for the CUV craze. Coupled with a blotched launch (too many premium trims on the lots, not enough cheaper variants) that tainted people's view towards the car and some quality concerns, the Pacifica unfortunately had no chance when the CUV wave did hit. I personally believe that the Pacifica is one of those cars that should have had a 2d gen (and if executed correctly would have resulted in a great car), but unfortunately did not.

As was the R Class, although it's pretty popular as a hearse. The R class will get a second generation model, however it will be based on the E class chassis not the ML like the current model.

The Journey's actually smaller than the Pacifica. The Journey's closer to the size of a Chevy Equinox whereas the Pacifica was closer in size to the larger Chevy Traverse.
