If You Could Have ANY Car.....

Sun Sep 02, 2012 5:08 pm

Which would it be?

For me, it would have to be an Audi R8 Coupé 5.2 FSI quattro.

Here's me in front of my dream car.
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/305199_10151029425631301_1894729835_n.jpg

A very close second would have to be the BMW Z4.

Facel Vega HK500:

http://s1.aecdn.com/images/news/internet-find-of-the-day-1961-facel-vega-hk500-coupe-28783_1.jpg

Something about all of the cars Facel made that just interest me. I'd take any of the models they built. A 1960 HK500 sold a few weeks ago at Mecum's auction at Monterrey for $69,000. Some Facel Vega models can go for $100K+. There's a collector car dealer in CT that has a 1956 Facel Vega FV2B (Which is an earlier version of what become the HK500, which was replaced by the Vega II.) priced at $135K.

I had an eye on this Ferrari Enzo at the Ferrari store in Monte Carlo only that a rich Italian came and snatched her before I could even think of what kind of offer to make on this jewel of a car.

My baby's gone with another man...

A friend phoned me today after the F1 race had ended. He told me he saw another same Ferrari Enzo on the street that would fit me quite well only it is yellow.

In fact I like the yellow better. They are the originals before the red ever came.

As long as there's life there's hope... as they say!

I would get an old Unimog 404 and convert it into something like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f6/S404-300TDI-erg-chebbi.jpg/750px-S404-300TDI-erg-chebbi.jpg

for long distance travel. The truck started as a military field ambulance or radio truck like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a7/Unimog_Sanitaeter.jpg/800px-Unimog_Sanitaeter.jpg

Since the original 404 models were powered by a very thirsty petrol engine, I would replace it with a Diesel engine, e.g. the engine from the MB trac fram tractor fits (since this tractor has been built using the Unimog chassis as a base).

Certainly the best looking French car.
I drove one once for a few blocks. A friend of mine in San Francisco owns one. The brakes felt strange since it wasn't a traditional pedal.

That's my more realistic classic car want. The price range on that particular generation of Continentals varies enough that it's an affordable classic. Of course if the top goes down, the price goes up.

Forget the cars that cost as much as a house or yacht, I just want my Lexus IS-F. Sure, it isn't 600HP but who needs that? The speed limit in Ontario is 100km/h on the highways. This one is practical but it looks great.

Yep, a major fault of "suicide door" Lincolns is that they are highly prone to rust underneath, and since they are unit-body cars with no separate frame underbody rust can be an extremely expensive problem to fix properly.

Still, a '61-'69 Continental is hard to beat for sheer presence. Arriving anywhere in one will definitely get you noticed.

Back to the main topic: Since I guess by the other posts in this thread that we're throwing day-to-day practicality to the wind and going for curb appeal and an outward indication of our inner "Walter Mitty" selves, I'll go for a '66 Mercury S55 convertible-

...Or a '68 Dodge Monaco 500 fastback-

My favorite of the suicide door era is the 1966-1967 models. 1966 was the first to have the tubular speedometer that would last all the way until 1977 - the year I own.
It's a shame those 60s Continentals were not boddy-on-frame like the 1970 - 2011 Town Cars.
The 2004 Continental concept was an all new body-on-frame design that wouldn't have had the 'sag' issues of the 60s Continental convertibles. I'm pretty sure that a convertible was in mind for that concept.

Another car I'd like to have would be the 1970 Mercury Marquis convertible or the 1968 Mercury Park Lane convertible with Colony Park decklid simulated woodgrain side panels.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Superfly8track/1968MercuryParkLane.jpg

Another close contender is the 1970 Cadillac DeVille convertible.
Such a beauty! Too bad it's hard to find one that hasn't been ghettoized by young street punks that love the full-sized GM cars of this era.

Such a hard question for a car guy... I'm feeling practical right now so I'll put a couple that I could realistically buy and own:
2004 Subaru WRX STi

1997 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon

I guess I'm part of the way there, as I currently drive a 2000 Subaru Legacy L Wagon. Love my Subaru's!

(That said, #3 would be a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird. Odd, I know.)

If a car is driving fast and there is no cop to see it, is it really speeding?

Which would it be?

First choice would be a Hennessey Venom GT. More power than a Veyron Super Sport but about a third lighter.

Failing that I'd get a Porsche 959. I saw one sold at auction for about half a million dollars and frankly I don't think there's any new cars for that price or less that I'd rather have. A McLaren MP4-12C might tempt me though.

It freaked me out at first. I think I read that the models exported to the U.K. had to use the traditional brakes.
The hydraulic breaks may have seemed like a neat idea at the time but when the car is 40+ years old, I would hate to have to find those parts. I looked at the schematics for those brakes and it looked like a mess and potential for a lot to go wrong. Would hate for the breaks to fail and hit something - damaging that beautiful front end.

My current dream car is the Mercedes SL 63, but I'd also love an Aston Martin DB9.

My CLK is 10 years old now and I'm due for an upgrade so I'd better start saving my pennies.
But that was when I ruled the world

I've reached a point where getting in and out of a car is just as important as the car itself. For now I'll stay with

What I'd like for a replacement would be a CUV as they are easier to get into, maybe in the GM family as I like OnStar. After two surgeries to fuse a cervical disc I also want a back-up camera. (As cheap as they are I think they should be required on all cars these days.)

Haha! Nice!
Was it the French name that inspired your parents to buy the Marquis?

We're Australian. I've only been in France for the last 10 years. Dad got it 18months old in Dec '72 for what he considered a song. It was extremely reliable and, to him, a dream to drive. He took it up to 125mph once on the Interstate 95 on one of our trips to Williamsburg (I hope the statue of limitations has passed on that). It felt the same as it did at 60mph! What was their engine size? 7litre V8?
When all's said and done, there'll be more said than done.

A song in December 1972?
Could have been Highway Star by Deep Purple or Top Of The World by the Carpenters.

Interesting. 'Williamsburg' was a special edition two-tone edition for the 1977-1979 Lincoln Continentals which were on the same platform as your parents 1972 Marquis.

The Ford & Mercury full-size cars had the 429cu" V8 for 1972.
1974 would go to the 460cu" V8.

44 out of 50 airline pilots agree with your dad.
(1974 model shown but pretty much the same car with different grille)

No way. I've seen a few old imported American cars from my era where the owners did as much as possible to keep the car looking original and they look pretty beat.
I keep mines docked in SoCal.
Dealing with customs, finding parts, having to pay for shipping, possibly getting lost, agents wanting bribes. It's not worth it to bring it over. Thailand is very protective of their auto industry. Bringing in a car is probably worse than bringing in drugs because the duties/taxes are high (328%). They want people to buy the junk cars made here which still has a 60% tax. As long as I live here in Thailand, it will be a used Toyota Crown. Even those are expensive.

I'm there already. Actually I've always been that way. I hate the low seating position of many sports cars and I hate having to duck my head to get in a car due to a low roof-line.

Whoa, I didn't think it was that serious.
I'll be nicer to you in the forums.

You beat me to it . . . . only I'd have to correct you: THE most beautiful car ever made! Orgasm on wheels.

I typed that at first, but then backed up just not to cause offence.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 37):
That award goes to the 1958 Edsel Citation.

Meh, looks just like any other car of the same era.

A Lancia Stratos in the Alitalia livery..

Saw and heard 3 of those at ADAC Rally Deutschland last week. It looks and especially sounds amazing, and even more amazing is that their owners is rallying them.

Pic is taken last friday on the Mittelmosel stage during the classic rally part of the stage.

I don't think you'd like the CUV, because it'll require a big step up and hoisting yourself into it. My former MIL had similar back issues and was a big fan of Volvos since she could just glide into the seat, and the trunk was set up so she didn't need to lift to get the groceries out of the back. I suppose your current ride is pretty much set up the same way.

I suppose Dad wouldn't have been into "Close to the Edge"?

Maybe he was more into "Foxtrot", allegedly named after a setting on Tony Banks's Mellotron Mk II?

Or maybe Dad was a fan of Tull?

Inspiration, move me brightly! Light the song with sense and color.
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.

Good one!
Considering how long those songs are, it's very possible. If he did a Jon Anderson impression on the sales floor, the salesman may have sweetened the deal just to get him out of the store as quick as possible - even if they took a loss.

I like Jon Anderson's voice but I know many do not.
