Opel Reveals New Cascada Convertible - New Buick?

Thu Sep 06, 2012 2:52 am

Opel is hoping to position their new 2013 Cascada soft-top convertible as a standalone, premium model - not merely a replacement for the current Opel Astra "Twin-Top" convertible. The body of the new Cascada is unique and nearly 15 and a half feet in length. That makes it longer than an Audi A5 Cabrio, Opel's rumored target for its new convertible.

From spy photos, the Cascada will look much different than the regular Astra range, although it sures some of the Astra's "Delta II" platform. Additionally, in line with its premium positioning, the Cascada will feature a sophisticated front suspension borrowed from the Insignia OPC sport sedan, featuring the Insignia's High Performance Strut front suspension as well as most of the OPC's rear suspension bits.

No official word yet from Opel on engines for the Cascada, but utilizing the current Regal GS' 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder motor in the Cascada's Buick variant would make 270 horsepower and 295 pounds of torque - same as the Regal GS sedan.

First sales of the Opel Cascada will take place in Europe in early 2013, and (assuming Opel somehow survives its current dire financial situation) the Cascada could be lauched in the U.S.A, wearing a Buick badge as a Verano convertible by late 2013 --- or (if Buick's marketing department is smart) a new version of the iconic Buick Riviera.

Furthermore on the Buick front, although it’s yet to be officially confirmed by General Motors for U.S. market, the new Opel Astra GTC three-door is also a good bet to be making its way into Buick showrooms - to be sold as a Buick Verano GS coupe sometime in 2013. Of course, Opel need to survive as a GM division for ANY of this to become reality....
