What Kind Of Country Is America?

Sat Sep 08, 2012 2:30 pm

What kind of country is America if it cedes its sovereignty in matters of war and peace to a tiny ally like Israel, that seems hell bent on manipulating American decision making by manipulating American domestic politics?

These are not my words exactly (I've filled in the blanks) but those of Robert W. Merry:

http://nationalinterest.org/commenta...sraeli-interests-diverge-iran-7431

Does it not defy logic that a miniscule newcomer of a state (leaving aside the issue of legitimacy) created only 64 years ago, should be able to exert such influence over the world's main superpower?

Whichever way you look at it, the math simply doesn't add up. The US possesses vastly superior statistics in GDP, population, natural resources and geographic land mass - so why are they so sensitive, accommodating and beholden to a lightweight minnow like Israel?

All things considered, the amount of attention that the US government pays to Israel's interests appears to be ridiculously disproportionate, which therefore leads to the question:

Why is Israel able to exert such force and manipulation over a country like the US?

Secondly, why do the American people continue to tolerate this?

And also, essentially, maxthrusta330, they ARE just words?

For domestic political reasons, the United States has to pay a certain amount of 'lip service' to the State of Israel.

But that's ALL it is, in my opinion. 'Robert W. Merry' is just another 'no-count,' seems to me?

Slow your roll, I think you're approaching this from the wrong angle...

I don't think Israel is really doing anything... it's the forces within *our* country that are the cause of this IMO. Israel as a sovereign nation says they're planning on doing something, calming, just requesting our help (or not sometimes) but the politicians over hear are the ones that blow everything up. Look at what Israel says, then look what happens in the US. Unless there is a conspiracy of Israel inserting people into our government, it's probably just the partisanship exploding in our country and politicians freaking out, just like normal.

There is a strong notion in the US that Iran is going to mess with us as well if they get nukes... to stop Iran from getting nukes, wouldn't you want to work with your strongest and closest ally in the region to help stop Iran from getting nukes?

Now I personally disagree with all that, but a large amount of Americans here do. I can't really blame them, and I'm sure if Australia was the one threatened you'd have a bit more concern over there. Just the way people work

None, as America is a continent and not a single country.

and "America" is also a shortened version of the "United States of America" so I don't see where you're going with this besides trying to incite people. I think exactly 0 people saw this post and thought the poster was talking about everything from Canada to Argentina

Because many Americans are evangelical Christians who believe that the Jews need to be repatriated to the land God promised them in the Bible in order for the world to end. The Jews are much more indifferent to Zionism.

So the world is going to end because some Jewish people move to another country...

If "the world is going to end" shouldn't the rest of us be be trying to stop them moving back there?

Well, considering there's a good chance that Israel would be "driven into the sea' with no real world support, I'm sure having us as an ally is at least mildly comforting - and convenient.

I realize Israel is tough and can probably take care of themselves, but after things like Rwanda where the world did nothing, I can't blame anyone for expecting Israel to have at least one good, strong ally. YMMV.

As to the whole Israel/Iran thing, what on earth gives even the slightest shred of legitimacy to the Israel position vis-a-vie nukes, considering how they themselves acquired their own nukes.
What do you think would happen if say China/Russia/Pakistan etc just came out and said.... "We've sold a nuclear weapon to Iran for defensive purposes"? I've actually go no real problem with Iran obtaining/developing nukes because like it or not, it's the one-sided availability of nuclear weapons that is destabilizing the mid-east right now. If Iran and Israel both have nukes, they'll be FORCED to fall into the M.A.D. scenario (Mutually Assured Destruction) that the old USSR/USA stalemate became. And despite the hatred, the conflicting ideology, religion, etc, they'll be forced to come to some sort of accommodation with each other. That might actually be a benefit to the mid-east.

That's assuming that neither nation is prepared to fight to the death. With two very strong religious countries - Israel and Iran - who's to say how far it might escalate. And as I said above, I don't think for a moment that anyone is going to come riding to their rescue (Israel's) unless it's the US. Just my opinion.

Uh, not if you don't believe it. ???

I guess the history of how Srael came to being is important in the context of Americas approach to it. If you went back 70 years, maybe the US would change its involvement or the strategy around Israel.

I am not a great fan of everything Israel does but i do think its a good thing that they have the US as an ally as I feel quite certain that they would have ceased to exist long ago without them
