OH Teen Tweets Obama Assassination Threat

Sat Sep 08, 2012 8:39 pm

Celebrities aren't the only ones who say stupid things on Twitter:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/politi...nation-teenager-investigation.html

Alyssa Douglas, a high school girl from the Clarksville, Ohio, area, about 40 miles northeast of Cincinnati, appears to have sent out a tweet Thursday night, hours before President Barack Obama's convention speech, saying: "Someone needs to assassinate Obama ... like ASAP."

The Secret Service is investigating the posting on Twitter as a potential threat and will report its findings to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio.

Clinton-Massie School District officials had a meeting with Douglas and her parents Friday morning.

While I don't agree with the President's policies, this girl went WAY, WAY OVER THE LINE here. And she should be held accountable. The "she's just sixteen...give her a break," argument doesn't do much to sway me, either - she wants to talk like an adult, she should be held accountable like one.

Legally this will be interesting, The way she worded it, it sounds like she *hopes* someone does it ASAP. She's not expressing the intention of doing it herself, nor is this a specific request to someone to do it.

If they drag this to court, it will be a matter of who has the better lawyer IMO.

Still, people shouldn't be allowed to write things like that.

The trouble is that she merely parroted a sentiment which has been cooked up and progressively escalated by "tea party" followers since Obama's election. There is a whole subculture of actual hatred against the active President far, far beyond any justifiable political boundaries or opposition.

Apart from the sad statement this makes about the greater political culture in the USA and its rampant lack of civility particularly from the right, it is far from the first time that fertile ground has been prepared and the seeds sown for actual terrorist acts to grow out of.

Even in this forum many of the utterly bizarre ideas and outright, disproven lies from this subculture are being propagated in broad daylight. Some people still suffer from the delusion that hate propaganda was somehow "harmless", but by now we all should really know better, shouldn't we?

Sounds like the Secret Service are doing their job. Then again, they've already had a face to face meeting with a birther who called for a public beheading of President Obama, so they're probaly used to dealing with the nutters who have internet access.

Taking the behaviour of some stupid kid and trying to drag in the Tea Party. Good job.

Are you for real?

And this is unique to Obama or democrats or presidents or to Americans? lol Seriously, thank you for checking in with your blame-the-tea-party-and-crazy-right-wingers point of view.

The sad thing is that you propbably didn't even get the blatant irony inherent in your post, particularly in view of the bottom-of-the-barrel ad-hominem you couldn't help inserting into it.

You've essentially made my point.

For further illustration (took me only minutes googling "tea party obama" to get swamped with toxic bilge like this):

http://cdn-live2.blackenterprise.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2010/07/slavery.jpg

Common threads across large parts of the "tea party" propaganda:
• Categorically deny that Obama is, in fact, the legitimately elected President of the United States of America.
• Avoid democratic terminology, use military or revolutionary imagery throughout.
• Never acknowledge legitimate differences of opinion; Declare Obama a mortal enemy wherever you can get away with it at all.
• Insinuate that Obama wants to destroy the "white race".

All of it is consistently intended to de-legitimize Obama in absolutely every way (his office, his politics and his person), progressively lowering the threshold for nutjobs prone to actual violence.

Looking from a country which has, in fact, lived through exactly that level of political propaganda right up to its eventual culmination only a few decades ago and which got and actually took to heart a much-needed lesson in political culture during US occupation, it is beyond sad and thoroughly troubling in its implications to see, of all countries, the USA devolving to where we've come from and never want to go back to, for many million reasons.

That's a stretch, even for you Klaus.

That's a stretch, even for you Klaus.

The so-called "tea party" appears to be the main focal point for people of that mindset, and given that same people tend to repeat a closely correlated set of specific propaganda claims, it is difficult to overlook the obvious connection.

Quoting Dreadnought (Reply 9):
AND desires to see him murdered?

You cannot aggressively de-legitimize and even de-humanize someone, without any even remote connection painting him as satan, as a re-incarnation of Hitler and other mass-murderers and then turn around and still feign surprise when these carefully and consistently fanned embers eventually and predictably turn into flames.

That simply doesn't fly.

Either you treat other people as human beings – even if as political adversaries if you must – or you treat them as targets to be annihilated. There is no real middle ground here.

So which is it?

Do you dare do declare yourself without equivocation?

Anyway....

That was a really really really dumb thing to post on social media.

Remember the "cross-hairs" controversy that emerged following the Gifford shooting? While there is no doubt that Sarah Palin was not actually calling for assassinations, her campaign did include "targets" being placed in the "cross-hairs of gun-sights". She also invited her supporters to "reload" and take "aim". Palin may have been appealing to the gun lobby and was using figures of speech. The tragedy is that there are those who are apt to take things literally. No wonder the Secret Service takes these things seriously.

Ya, but implying that Mitt Romney was responsible for a womans death or that George Bush being elected was like a black man being dragged to his death all over again - ya, those are responsible advertisements that wouldn't get anyone worked up - you know, like someone who's mom is dying of cancer or who's black and been discriminated against.

Ya, it's only the tea party......

The one way street that seems to be so prevelant is nauseating.

Sorry, but I know people who would ally themselves with the "tea party" movement. The way that you and most liberals characterize them all as if they are all part of the same nuthouse is simply insulting to the millions of intelligent, thoughtful, proud Americans who simply see things differently than you. All movements get infiltrated by misguided, insane, or purposefully pot-stirring people.

But thank you for repeating YOUR propaganda. Good job instilling it into the minds of those here.

I like this part of her sentence. It really sets the tone a gives us an idea of the general level of education and intellect at play here.

Let's stick that sentence on the 'Annoying Facebook Girl' meme and start a meme thread already.
