Itunes Help: How To Deauthorize...

Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:28 pm

Well, I have my current Itunes library authorized in 5 computers. Of course, I no longer 4 of those.

I checked within Itunes discussion and found out that i can DE authorize all of them once every 12 months.
Now the question is : If I proceed with the De authorization, what will happeN. I mean, will loose anything from the current library?

Any comment/suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure you read that correctly? ie, allowing you to delete 'once' every 12 months? That sounds rather limiting, I am in the same position, on my 5th computer and the prior 4 I no longer have. I had researched this to find out but don't remember it being that limiting,,just something along the lines of 'when I reach 5' and need to authorize another, I can then do so. I ll hve to re read it again, but I just don't think it should be that limiting. It is your computer and your paid music.

Did it a couple years ago and it was just re-authorize the computer where I had the information. Almost 2 years since I used iTunes last but don't think it has changed.

Once you reach five authorised computers, you can de-authorise them all and then re-authorise those that you actually use. Nothing will happen to your files, the authorisation just enables iTunes to open them.

That's what it was like a couple of years ago, anyway... I've only done that once.

Why didn't you de-authorize the computers before you got rid of them?

Which actually just affects DRM-controlled files, which means primarily purchased movies and TV shows. Music and most other stuff in iTunes are DRM-free anyway (except the older 128kb/s music files from the Store, but you can upgrade those to the newer, DRM-free format as well if you want).

Indeed. That is the proper way to go before selling or recycling an old computer.

I had to do it once, and nothing was lost.

Can be many reasons for that. For me, one computer stopped working completely, could not do it, my mac crashed once, recovered, but needed new authorization (so 3 authorizations were used on 2 computers). One computer, I simply forgot (hey there is a lot one has to do when changing computers, iTunes deauthorization isn't top of the list).

So, with my 5 authorizations, I had

1 on my current PC
1 on my current mac
1 connected to my current mac (before crash)
1 on my former PC (forgot)
1 on my dead PC

So, in order to free up 3 of the 5, I had to deauthorize all, and then authorize my current PC and mac (had a second mac I wanted to use).

That is correct. In fact, I checked the Itunes forum/support pages and got the answer.
But thanks to all of you guys who helped with their info, posting here as well... Much appreciated.
