What Would Star Trek Crewmembers Drive

Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:42 pm

http://cgdailydrive.com/what-would-star-trek-crewmembers-drive-part-2/

That's the 2nd of two, I disagree with all of them.

Kirk was a Iowa farm boy by birth, he wouldn't drive a flashy Bentley. He would drive an older 3/4 ton diesel pickup truck.

Data and the Volt make the most sense, but in order to better understand humanity he'd tool around in a beige Toyota Camry.

Worf and the Porsche again make little sense. Klingons have no need for flash, he'd need a car like a batleth, highly functional yet simple. Despite being a hulking Klingon his sensibilities might lean towards an older Lotus.

Picard and the AMG wagon is all wrong. Picard is first and foremost a Frenchman -- driving something German would be out of the question. He also reveres older stuff -- I see him in a Citroen DS or CX, properly French but still nice.

Spock and the Prius V is an ok match -- but I think better fitting with the Vulcan sensibility would be an older Mercedes Benz.... say a W123 240D with the 4-speed manual.

Riker (while not on the list) would be driving a Corvette ZR-1, flashy but not too flash (that can come once he makes Admiral), but still a panty dropper.

If I ever saw Worf getting out of a Porsche, I think I would laugh and then immediately slap him.

I wonder what Sulu would drive? I should post those that link on George Takai's Facebook page and see if we can get an answer.

While highly functional and simple, batleths are also durable and reliable, two qualities for which no Lotus has ever been known. Klingons, Worf in particular, are also known for a distinct lack of subtlety. With those criteria in mind, I'd expect Worf to drive a Plymouth Superbird.

But Riker is also all about comfort and classic style as shown by his fondness for jazz and trombone playing. I can see Riker in a '65 Lincoln Continental convertible like the one seen in Entourage.

Sulu is easy- An '89 Nissan Skyline GTR (R32).

Riker is from Alaska...I could see him in a 4x4.

Actually, now that I think about it...Riker was from Juneau, so he'd probably be using a snowmobile, plane, or boat to get around...

He was born in Mexico so he speaks a different dialect of Spanish than what you'd hear in Spain.
After he started appearing on Star Trek as Khan, Chrysler redesigned the Cordoba and gave the car an updated, state-of-the-art and more fuel efficient design. Perhaps his pronunciation of Cordoba improved a bit.

The Cordoba is almost too obvious for Khan, a slightly more subtle choice for Khan would be a Plymouth Reliant. That said I do love the early b-body Cordobas, I highly dislike them after the facelift with the stacked quad (square) headlamps though.

Maybe we'll have to agree to disagree here. I feel like Klingons are almost a minimalistic people, very utilitarian. Which is why I considered something like a Lotus, built to a purpose, nothing extraneous, while not always exceptional on paper but very capable in the hands of a skilled driver. I think the design sensibilities behind the bat'leth and the Bird-of-Prey are similar. Simple and basic, but require a lot of skill and practice to master. So lets change my vote from an old Lotus to something more reliable, like an Elise -- a Lotus with a Toyota engine. So assuming Worf could get in one he'd drive it.

Unfortunately I think Sulu is one of those woefully underdeveloped characters in the ST universe. I don't quite see the Skyline GT-R, but I could see him in one of the nicer large Japanese sedans -- with the high output turbo I-6s.... like a Toyota Crown/Mark X/Chaser

What about the Engineers --- Scotty, LaForge and O'Brien (I am purposefully ignoring Voyager here).

Someone on another forum suggested the McLaren F1 for Scotty, which I wholly agree with. I just can't get a feel on the other 2.

I can't see a Klingon in anything but a Hummer, except maybe an older 50s or 60s Dodge Power Wagon.

Scotty seems to prefer things that require constant tinkering to run properly so that he can show off his exceptional skill as an engineer. Scotty has also on numerous occasions shown an appreciation for alternate or obsolete propulsion systems. With those criteria in mind, I can see Commander Scott behind the wheel of a meticulously restored Doble. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doble_steam_car

I'm with you 100%, except for the Lotus part. You've also just described a '68-'70 Plymouth Roadrunner (upon which the Superbird was based): "built to a purpose, nothing extraneous, while not always exceptional on paper but very capable in the hands of a skilled driver. Simple and basic, but require a lot of skill and practice to master." With that in mind, I'll change my vote from Superbird to basic Roadrunner.

And the first time something on it (besides the engine) broke in normal use, Worf would kick it until it was a pile of very expensive scrap metal.

IIRC, the pronounciation of the Spanish city of Cordoba is actually, Cor-d-obAH. Whereas Cordoba the car is simply Cord-oba.

Incidentally, the starship that Khan hijacked was indeed the U.S.S. Reliant. I'm sure the naming of the ship was indeed an inside joke between RM and Chrysler-Plymouth.

WOW, I didn't even know that!
Richardo Montalban was too classy to drive around in a Reliant and the U.S.S. New Yorker or U.S.S. Lebaron would have been too obvious. Perhaps the U.S.S. Fury would have been a better name.

The 1980 model was hardly a mere reskin. Those redesigned models (and transferred to the M-body platform) have more of a Continental Mark V-like profile.

They could have looked towards Canada and named the ship the U.S.S. Caravelle (which was Plymouth's M-body (i.e. Dodge Diplomat) through 1981 on the Canadian market); but I guess the writers were looking for a Mopar product had a relatively new name. Imagine if they waited 2 to 3 years to make the film and used the Voyager name; that might have prevented them from using the Voyager name in a later spin-off series.

Prior to the 1984 minivan; Plymouth used the Voyager nameplate on its full-size van; back when they had them (1970s).

Chrysler actually used the Cordoba name once before 1975 for a specially trimmed Newport model back in 1970.

Captain Picard has a "human predilection for piloting vehicles at unsafe velocities"

I don't think a Citroen DS or CX really suits him. It's too conservative. Perhaps a Peugeot 208 GTi? Renault Megane RS? Neither are as potent as an AMG E63.

Patrick Stewart is a car enthusiast, and I'm lead to believe that he loves his Jaguars. So perhaps a Jaguar XKR-S would suit Captain Picard too.
