For me a toss up between Eddie, Stevie Ray, or Jimmy. I love Rush but Alex couldn't hold a candle to those three. Neil on drums? That's a no brainer in the Percussion vote.

On a classical guitar the answer is Paco de Lucia, but that's probably a different magazine (with much lower subscription stats)!

Those polls are bull**** anyway; there is no such animal as the best guitarist (or drummer or singer or bass player). You may tell them what your *favourite* guitarist is, but not the *best*.

Every artist basically stands on an island - called Jazz or Blues or whatever - where he or she may be brilliant. But as soon as you move the artist on another island he/she probably fails miserably, no matter if it's Mark Knopfler or Pat Metheny. And artists like Kaki King or Gordon Giltrap won't make it anyway, because hardly anyone knows them.

Best thing about these debates is that it stimulates threads with plenty of names to check out.

Some of mine; Gary Moore, Django Reinhardt, Paul Gilbert

Athel "Doc" Watson. Unfortunately he passed away a few months ago (there was a thread about it).

He changed the guitar from being a pure harmony instrument in Bluegrass music and made it a solo instrument, and surprised everybody by being able to play fiddle tunes at high speed on the guitar (watch towards then end of this movie, where he increases the speed):

BTW, he originally played electric guitar in a rockabilly band, but later changed to accoustic guitar. And he was blind from birth.

Another one would be the British guitarist Bert Jansch (unfortunately dead as well):

He played a mix of folk and jazz and is known as a member of the shortlived, but revolutionary band Pentangle of the late 1960s-early 1970s, where he played the guitar together with his equally good fellow guitarist John Renbourn, singer Jaqui McShee, bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox.

(Hunting song from the 1969 album Basket of Light)

Then the American singer and guitarist Dave van Ronk aka "The Mayor of McDougall Street" in Greenwich Village, NYC(unfortunately dead as well) :

BTW, even though not gay himself, he came to the help of the gays, who rebelled against police harrasment during the Christopher Street riots and was one of the arrested.

Then Django Reinhardt: A Belgian swing guitarist of Roma origin famous in the 1920s- 1950s.

He lost the use of three fingers of his left hand as a young man, when the caravan he and his wife lived in caught fire. Still he developed a new way to play he guitar.

He and his band were mainly responsible for the development of Euro jazz.

Else I agree with NoUFO´s post: Every guitarist is unique, this is why I´ve listed several from different styles, whom I all like (unfortunately all of them are dead by now)

Jan

I embedded several Youtube videos of these musicians, but they seem to have not gone through.

Me,too.

But I would say that Lifeson would be in my top ten but not #1.I might put him #5/6 on all time greats.

Here's why and it's been posted before.Alex is a fabulous guitarist and the recent "Time Machine 1 & 2 concerts" in which I saw him/Rush at Gibson, now being torn down in LA, Alex came out to the fore front but he's problem is that he complements Geddy's keyboards which is no fault of his. He's often cast more as great "Rhythmic Guitarist"

But hands down, it's Lifeson over who? Yeah,I agree. How does Dimebag even come into the conversation.Very laughable.

Not sure what exactly you mean. Lifeson has guitar solos on a gigantic percentage of Rush songs. Sure, he assumed a lesser role on about 3 or 4 albums, but that's out of 19 albums of original material.

Even on keyboard-heavy songs like "Subdivisions", he still has solos.

Not just because I've been a Rush fan most of my life but because Alex Lifeson is an incredible guitar player.

Dimebag is ok but I think he is listed because of his tragic death.

I'm not taking anything from Lifeson. No way. He's #1 as today's active guitar players.I'm saying that he switches off front duties with Geddy. Ritchie Blackmore and the late and great Jon Lord were the same way.

Guitarist pissing contests bore me. The great thing about such a versatile instrument is it yields a wide range of performers with unlimited variety in their approaches to using it for expression. Whether it's an angry shredfest, a bunch of soaring arpeggios, or a long weeping string-bending solo, we can be touched myriad ways by how people manipulate those six strings. That alone is enough to keep me interested.

So yeah - people can go on about Jimi, Jimmy, Buck, SRV, Lifeson, Walsh, the Edge, Summers, Felder, Perry, Robertson, Smith, May, Frusciante, Carlos, or whoever else of note - but if they plugged in and ever had something to say with the instrument, I'm there. That's what really loving the guitar is all about in my book.

´Fly, check out this band:
www.carolinachocolatedrops.com

I stumbled upon them yesterday while searching for some oldtime music tunes and some old footage of the New Lost City Ramblers.

Unfortunately I can´t post Youtube videos in here, but there are plenty around (I spent the whole afternoon yesterday listening to them).
Besides performing they are also serious in researching American folk music from the 1860s to the 1940s and could become the successors of the New Lost City Ramblers in this aspect.
Interestingly for them Black American folk music is not restricted to blues and chaingang worksongs. They learned a lot oif their songs from an 80+ year old black fiddler, who used to play in stringbands in North Carolina and many of the tunes he learned as a kid from his father (and he from his father) were the same as their rural white neighbours were playing and singing. According to them it was a big mix, with influences from England, Scotland, Ireland (and other European countries) and West Africa. The lead singer, Rhionna Giddens, of the group also knows how to sing in Scots and Irish Gaelic (according to comments on Youtube she has a very good pronounciation, though I don´t know in how far she understands what she sings. She might understand it bas well, since her husband is Irish).
The funny looking guy with the glasses and bowler hat looks a bit like a clown, but in interviews he is dead serious about his music. All of them play a whole bunch of instruments (fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, resonator guitar, jug, pan pipes, bones etc.).

I have every album of their's up to Chicago 25.
My favorite album of their's is Chicago VII.
Side one of that album is all instrumental, jazz fusion.
Terry Kath really shines on Aire and Devil's Suite.

Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CTU8mDmN34, where they play a 1920s tune from the Memphis Jug Band. If you watch her closely you can clearly see why the tune was called "Memphis Shakedown"

There is no such thing and the "best" guitarist - how can you possibly measure it? Notes per second, number of chords you know, number of songs you can play? What about genre? The "best" rock guitarist might not be better than the "best" jazz guitarist etc. So it's really who's your favorite. If someone put a gun to my head and said I had to name a best though, I'd say someone I don't see anyone mentioning - Jeff Beck. He's a great rock, blues and jazz player, does some insanely creative stuff and is still out there doing it after over 40 years.
As for my favorites, here's a few:
Jazz - Al Dimeola
Blues - SRV
Classical - Andres Segovia
Rock - Uli Jon Roth

That 3rd clip, her voice is more bearable. The music is great in all of the vidoes but not too crazy about her voice.
I tend to like soft female voices like Karen Carpenter, Ann Wilson (Heart), Lani Hall (Brazil '66), Chaka Khan, Minnie Ripperton and Megumi Hayashibara.

Same here but girls are gorgeous today as well.
