Sam Jackson's "Wake The **** Up" Obama Ad

Sat Sep 29, 2012 1:52 am

Fresh from the Jewish Council for Education and Research PAC (funded by George Soros's son apparently) and with a sript from Adam Mansbach, who wrote the book "Go the F*ck to Sleep!", Sam Jackson has appeared in a satiric ad full of profanity encouraging voters to "wake the f**k up".

Honestly I'm really on the fence with this one and not sure how to react. I've been out of the states for awhile now but I don't really remember when it was OK to encourage kids as small as the girl in the ad to drop F-bombs. I enjoy political snark with appropriately-placed profanity as much as anyone, but part of me feels that even satirically the way this one is written is a little over the top.

No??

Little Susie's brother would appear to shave his legs. Other than that oddity, it's pretty good. I liked the book it's based on, Go The F*ck To Sleep.

PS Samuel L Jackson? In case you ever wondered what the L stands for? The answer is Motherf*cker.

All the political content aside, I laughed at it.

Can't say it's any worse than hundreds of movies and TV shows that come out every year....

Yeah, it was very partisan and that little girl saying the F word might've been a little much, but I thought it was kinda funny. Probably not important enough to warrant the huge political **** storm that will probably ensue, but I guess that's just the name of the game

Even though I hope dems don't wake up  I thought it was funny. No one should make a big deal out if it. At least it was an attack or lie like so many other political adds.

I fear the US populace is just stupid enough to believe Obama is a good thing. But then I am perhaps just as that I didn't get Obamamoney or an Obamaphone and that the government made me pay my student loans and that I will not get free broadband Internet because I actually work to pay my bills. Under Obama I'm also working to support someone I will never meet. I'm sick of all politicians but especially sick of Obama.

Ummm what? This is the case no matter where you live, I guarantee it. It has been the case under every President, Republican or Democrat. Yeesh. "I work only for myself and nobody else" is as much an entitlement mentality as food stamp recipients who complain about the kind of bread or meet they are allowed to buy with their e-card.

I can see the idea that it's kind of borderline to use children this way. But hardly a big deal.
Also, while I agree with the content of the ad, it is nowhere near as funny as their last ad, with Sarah Silverman:

I often wonder if these actors and hollywood types actually understand what they're endorsing or if they just do it for a paycheck. If he really supports Obama though good for him for showing his support. But there had to be a more appropriate way. Imagine if there was a Romney support ad like this! There would be calls for his dropping out!

Are you suggesting that people with more money and free time than most of us are not capable of understanding something merely because they are entertainers?

Professional sports stars linking up with children's health advocacy groups, Bono doing his thing with medical relief and farming technique education in sub-Saharan Africa, Steven Spielberg serving on the board of liberal Jewish organizations....should these people not be doing these things and just live it up 24/7 instead? Seriously? Just wondering.

I doubt there's a check involved, at least not from the PAC to the actor (maybe the other way around).

In the same reportage about this ad it was said that George Clooney made Obama 15 millions in one dinner.

I never said they were unable of understanding something. But how many of these entertainers do you think could actually tell you about something Obama has accomplished outside of Obamacare and getting Bin Laden? Honestly. There are plenty of celebrities who do great things with charities. It is great that they do! They have all this money and pull with regular people. But how many of these celebrities actually oversee the day to day operations of their organizations? I'm sure some do, but most don't. After all they have this free time on their hands.

If the Republicans were smart, they would bring attention to these profanity loaded ads to note their offensiveness, the use of 'Hollywood' celebs and the use of children in ads with such content. As a lifelong Democrat, I don't like these ads being used by them, it speaks of a certain desperation, of trying to cut through the clutter and it may turn off some from supporting the party.

You aren't.

And if Obama's accomplishments are limited, it is because the GOP has decided that they hate Obama more than they love America. And so to that end, they have blocked just about every piece of legislation he's offered, even when the legislation was written by Republicans, just so that they can accuse him of being unproductive.

It's what Obama has tried to do in spite of GOP opposition that matters more than what he has done. His failure to do so is the fault of a malicious GOP that is trying to sink the country so that they can take power. They even said so outright. And they need to be ousted.

To be clear I never said Obama had a lack of accomplishments. I may not agree with some of what he has done, but I'm not one to run around saying he golfs too much and isn't focused on American issues. And in regard to it being the GOP's fault. I would have to disagree a tad. It is both their fault. They're both too blind to make compromises just so they can say it was their bill. The GOP yes has been worse than the democrats. But it is far from limited to just the GOP.

A lot of them. In fact, chances are they may know a thing or two more than the average man in the street. I say this because if I'm going to invest my time and money in a cause, I'm not going to do so without a lot of knowledge.

Not really. Obama has compromised on goals a great deal more than the GOP occupied congress has or will. To the point that the Affordable Healthcare Act had the two most important parts removed. What equivelant compromise has the GOP made? It's all well and good that we're going to get four more years in the Oval Office, but the real work lay in getting congress back to an acceptable representation of the people. We'll see how that works out.

It's not appropriate for a young child to use this kind of language in regular Hollywood trash movies and certainly not at school. Now to have this in a political advertisement is totally unacceptable - especially endorsing the President. Any person of decency would condemn this commercial but I wouldn't expect that from Obama. Since it's all about him, it's ok in his eyes and his supporters.

I voted for Hollande but I thought that 75% tax bracket was stupid. He knows it (he's an economist) but it's a promise so it is included in the budget that has just been presented. It has been mitigated as much as possible without looking like it was a renunciation, by including other taxes in it and making it a special tax only for two years.

In my opinion it would have been much better to make a new tax code from scratch like he also promised initially (but that promise wasn't in his platform), and the 45% bracket would have been enough once most loopholes are plugged. Reality is that money is needed right now to get to a 3% deficit target in 2013 so there is no time to lose on designing a new tax code. By comparison the US has a 5,5% target and no budget to make it happen so far.

Depends on how you measure it. Once you add in other payroll-related taxes that are effectively paid by the taxpayer but hidden as "employer contributions" (hint: there is no such thing) many countries get close to that, although (I believe) that 75% is still subject to other taxes (like employer and employee contributions to social security) so the real number is even higher.

Well, before getting into ENA you have to get a good diploma, he actually got three, one in law (he could be a lawyer with it), one in politics, and one in economy (from HEC, a school giving France and the world many CEOs). He taught economy, and was an "accountant" at the cour des comptes (roughly equivalent to the US GAO), giving him a serious background in fiscal matters I would think.

No, that's why I said it had been mitigated. The 75% includes the CSG and CRDS taxes, unlike the 45% bracket.

Really that tax was a political coup, and I think if it had been met with indifference from the left he would have dropped it, but since it proved extremely popular with more than 80% of the electorate from far right to far left, he had to do it. A relatively easy promise to keep.

I mean I'd be fine with it, the max I'd ever want is maybe 150,000 USD (maybe, not there yet, but that seems like more than enough) but even 1 million euros doesn't seem like that much. You only have 2,000 of them in France? Well at least they're fine with it

Welcome to the Demcoratic Party, circa 2012.

A party representing special interest groups.

They're the party of "Wake the F Up", free birth control, Obamaphones, Mitt Romney killing a guy, Paul Ryan throwing Grandma off the cliff and other chart-topping hits.

It's all they have left, really. Pathetic.

But what do you expect? When the record of EPIC FAILURE is as monumental as Obama's is, you have to run on demagoguery, deflection, deceit and distortion.
