It's great to see a non-english song succeed internationally. This rarely ever happens. Like the Macarena back in the day.

The song was successful on the same level of Rebecca Black's "Friday:" catchy, but perceived ridiculousness. Of course, it probably made him a lot of money and give him his 15-minutes, so I'm certain he doesn't mind. But it certainly wasn't successful on the level of respect.

Either I'm also in that cave (very possible) or it hasn't caught up here yet. The video is funny but the music is incredibly annoying, and I actually like techno/dance/trance.

It's Oppa. It means 'big brother" in korean. Why it's in the song, I'm not sure.

江南
South of the river, albeit that character has different meanings depending on the asian country. In Japanese, 江 is Creek or stream.

Oppa: Big brother
Oppan: Big brother is
Oppan Gangnam Style: Big brother is/has Gangnam Style.

A suburb that eventually outgrew the traditional city center! Perhaps the most 'happening' part of the city. Sort of like how Sandton is to Johannesburg, I guess.

Interestingly, 30 years ago, Gangnam was just farmland.

Umm, no. "Friday" was just a bad song, and it became popular for train wreck reasons. This song is actually legitimately catchy, and the accompanying dance is catchy as well. Sure, there's some ridiculousness factor to it, but people like the song (which you can't say about "Friday").

One of my Mexican friends is trying to say Macarena is better (but not by much) than Gangnam Style. I don't like either. When Macarena first came out, I acutally preferred the "B" side of the CD single and listened to that all the time. I think Macarena is okay. Just okay. This Gangnam Style song is okay. The dance, however, is stupid. Macarena is much better. Though it will be a cold, cold day in Havana when I do either.

Somewhat true. For the most part it isn't drastic, mainly touch ups here and there to 'perfect' their looks.

There are tons of pretty Koreans that haven't had any sort of plastic surgery. The song is actually poking fun at the idea of Gangnam ladies and their affinity for plastic surgery. Gangnam indeed does have a lot of plastic surgery clinics.

It's just something that makes me go hmm and jokingly want to ask for a pre-surgery picture. Especially the really hot ones and celebrities when things like the high school pictures of Miss Korea 2012, Kim Yu Mi, pop up and the difference is rather drastic. It isn't a deal breaker.

I really dig this acoustic cover of the song! Just found it on the web --> http://youtu.be/HmBByDQHJAA

I prefer this one. Keeps with the lively atmosphere and rhytm of the original. http://youtu.be/j4Xfe5A5c8s
The light at the end of tunnel turn out to be a lighted sing saying NO EXIT

I didn't feel like watching it all, but yeah, that part where he puts the "47%" on that waiter's back and laughs was hilarious
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

It´s either this or Justin F**ing Bieber or Nicky Minaj... and I choose Gangnam Style.

Agree... My 4 month old son cries whenever he sees Bieber on TV... we relent to Nicky Minaj just to keep him quiet... but he laughs full of joy with Gangnam Style...
When losing situational awareness, pray Cumulus Granitus isn't nearby !
