To Fat To Be A News Anchor!

Fri Oct 05, 2012 12:31 pm

I saw this on CNN last night, is Jennifer Livingston to fat to be on the news?

Quote:
Jennifer Livingston, an anchor for CBS affiliate WKBT in La Crosse, Wi., addressed her bully head on after receiving a letter — which her husband, WKBT anchor Mike Thompson, posted on his Facebook page — that scolded her for being an unacceptable role model on television for young girls because of her weight.

"Obesity is one of the worst choices a person can make and one of the most dangerous habits to maintain," a portion of the letter read. "I leave you this note hoping that you'll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle."

Rest of the article here

Now I don't think it was particularily nice what he said but I do agree with it, having an obese person fronting the news everynight gives off the impression that being fat is ok, it's not a good example for anyone.

What do others think?

Your butt is wide, well mine is too
Just watch your mouth or I'll sit on you
The word is out, better treat me right
'Cause I'm the king of cellulite
Ham on, ham on, ham on whole wheat, all right

My zippers bust, my buckles break
I'm too much man for you to take
The pavement cracks when I fall down
I've got more chins than Chinatown

Well, I've never used a phone booth
And I've never seen my toes
When I'm goin' to the movies
I take up seven rows

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Don't you call me pudgy, portly or stout
Just now tell me once again who's fat

When I walk out to get my mail
It measures on the Richter scale
Down at the beach I'm a lucky man
I'm the only one who gets a tan
If I have one more pie a la mode
I'm gonna need my own zip code

When you're only having seconds
I'm having twenty-thirds
When I go to get my shoes shined
I gotta take their word

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And my shadow weighs forty-two pounds
Lemme tell you once again who's fat

If you see me comin' your way
Better give me plenty space
If I tell you that I'm hungry
Then won't you feed my face

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Woo woo woo, when I sit around the house
I really sit around the house

You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know, you know, you know, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And you know all by myself I'm a crowd
Lemme tell you once again

You know I'm huge, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, you know, hoo
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And the whole world knows I'm fat and I'm proud
Just tell me once again who's fat

I support Jennifer Livingston and she deserves a lot of credit for taking on that obnoxious pr!ck. Rather refreshing considering the canned, scripted and predictable nature of news outlets today.
She is in Wisconsin and she the average size in Wisconsin. I see nothing wrong with her nor see any shortcomings.
It doesn't affect her job and news reporters usually aren't attractive anyway. That's more (and should be) more of an issue for flight attendants.
I really don't understand why some people obsess themselves with other people's weight.
The man who wrote that nasty letter is a total coward because no one knows what he looks like. He could very well look like hell himself. Same for anyone else that brings this issue up over an over again in a Internet discussion board, yet never reveals their own identity....

Yet we have the Simpsons which advocates alcoholism, and truancy.

Somebody was bored and wanted to moan at somebody. She is not "too fat" to do her job. Her job is to read and speak. Nobody is too fat for that, unless they're dead.

I don't see being fat as even in the same ballpark as the two issues you mentioned, you can't do anything about the color of your skin or who you are attracted too, you can do something about being fat.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 10):

I'd like to see you prove that having tattoos is anywhere near as dangerous to your health as being obese.

Personally I see fat as similar issue to smoking we all know the health risks associated with smoking and smoking rates are dropping, we all know being fat is dangerous yet obesity rates are climbing. I think the problem is being fat is becoming socially acceptable, this is wrong fat is not good, we don't defend smokers so why should we defend fatties.

Not in all cases. To some extent you're fighting genetics and there are other factors that may cause someone to not lose weight effectively or at all. My wife has a hormonal disorder that makes it more difficult for her to lose weight compared to others. Frankly speaking she'd be considered overweight based on BMI alone (which is BS). Yet she is an avid runner, watches her diet, practices yoga, and is in pretty good health overall. The point that Livingston makes is that Krause doesn't know her personally and doesn't know what her circumstances are. To criticize her like this *is* bullying.

I don't know, I'd think the risks of hepatitis B/C, HIV/AIDS, or other bloodborne pathogens are a bit more dangerous to your health (and the health of others) than having a few extra pounds.

Well I think that if you can you should lose the weight and a lot of effort has to be put into achieving that from all parties, but discriminating against fat people when there isn't an obvious safety issue (fat F/A or pilot, say) is not morally acceptable and will not achieve the desired outcome. If she lost her job would it help her lose weight ? Don't think so.

Your post is naught but fail on its very face for failure to mention what's perhaps his best role: Peter Gibbons in Office Space, especially in light of your inclusion of that awful adaptation of a wonderfully funny French movie!

Didn't realize that was his sister! Still though, it's not like they're identical twins - they'll have genetic similarities but enough differences that she may have other factors going for her (PCOS being one that springs to mind straight away)

Totally agreed! I was easily doing 30-40 miles a week on my bicycle and was doing that routinely when I lived in San Francisco, yet 260 pounds. I never felt my weight was an issue for me to exercise, have energy, get girls, etc.
According to those silly BMI charts, I'm 'supposed' to be 165 pounds since I'm 5'11".
I would look totally SICK at 165 pounds. I haven't weight that light since I was in 9th grade way back in the 80s. I've seen guys that are 5'11" and 165 pounds. I think it looks extremely frail and sick.

It's funny how there are so many 'slim' women in her age bracket that smoke, think they know it all and can't keep a man. Yet Jennifer Livingston is a full-figure lady that is a professional anchor woman, married an has 2 children. Apparently she is doing something right and all these haters can go stuff a sock up their you know what....

BMI was developed in the early-mid 19th century by a Belgian mathematician and it's notably fraught with errors. Many pro athletes are considered "overweight" or "obese" based off BMI because it doesn't take into account frame size or muscularity. Penn & Teller's "Bullshit!" did a great episode on BMI featuring a "fatlympics" with several participants who had normal BMIs and several with "overweight or obese" BMIs. The gold medal winner came from the latter category.

At the same time I know people who have perfectly fine BMIs who are walking ads for atherosclerosis based on their diets and lack of exercise - they just lucked out and hit the genetic lottery.

I watched her on GMA the other morning, and her husband had explained she has a thyroid issue, that makes it harder for her to lose weight, he always stated that she ran some marathon, was going to run one this weekend. So it isn't if she's some slob who doesn't care about her health, it's because she a medical condition.

Why do you always complain about it here under the anonymity of the Internet? This is obviously an issue that is so near and dear to you maybe you should talk to those people. You're implying that it's wrong for over-weight people to be "socially acceptable" and should somehow be humiliated. Perhaps you should try talking to people directly about this. You're the one that started the thread.

Therapy is needed by those that think it's ok to harass and humiliate people based on their weight.

The thing that pisses me off about this guy (and other "fitness" types that lord it over others who are not as "fit") is that he is jabbing her about a visible and arguably superficial aspect of her life that he particularly values. Probably in compensation for his other shortcomings.

Maybe I should send him a letter that as a patronizing dumbass he's setting a poor example for all the kids out there.

Rob, I edited my post because the author of the letter apparently responded to her response telling her that she should do some kind of public weight loss drill.

Sharing his opinion is one thing, but the author trying to compel some lady he doesn't even know to do things to meet his approval is another. I can see that as starting to drift into the bully lane.

Which means what?

Answer: absolutely nothing. Which is what you're about to become.

Ahh, sorry, slipped into movie-reference mode for a second there.

But seriously, I'm not particularly attracted to Indian girls. Do I need to go to therapy, to turn me into a good wholesome Indian son, who is attracted to and marries an Indian girl?

Quoting KiwiRob (Reply 24):
That is a problem that only you can work through, although maybe a therapist could help.

Dude. He doesn't consider it a problem. I don't know why you would.

I'm actually a bit shocked reading your posts (assuming they're serious....if not, oh well). I feel the same way about what you're saying as I do about the guy who wrote to the overweight anchor.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

The way I see it is that obesity is the major health problem facing the Western World, we should be fighting it like the health profession fought big tobacco, unfortunately there are far too many fat apologists out there, it gets even worse when countries like Canada decide to make being obese a disability, get serious these people in the vast majority of cases did it too themselves, why should we feel sorry for them, it's even worse when you see fat kids, in those cases it's not the kids doing it too themselves it's the parents, IMO that's borderline child abuse.

Completely agree, she could also do with dropping 100 pounds or so, it would probably help her career.

TV anchors should look like this

I'm sorry, but aside from the fact that she's pleasing to the eye, I prefer journalists to actually be good at their jobs. Somehow, I don't think that's a weight-dependent factor. Of course, Cronkite was probably obese based on BMI. As for Supe's tastes, those are his and he's entitled to them. There's no "mainstream" when it comes to something as individualized as one's preferences in romance. I may disagree with Larry on some things but I'll be damned if I'm not going to go to bat for him on that.

Eh, personally I find the failure of parents to teach their children the proper use of "to" versus "too" to be child abuse, but I'm not going to rant on it.

Body weight / BMI is one of the most important factors affecting attractiveness, with bigger = less attractive in most current societies. And he media prefer attractive people, heck, even classical music performers need to be attractive these days. So, I'd say the present case is in line with mainstream culture and not surprising at alll.

You know, that meter has shifted all over through the course of history. Where do you think we get the term "Rubenesque" from and when does it date from?

It's amazing how it's okay to make fun of skinny people but saying anything to an overweight person is a big no-no. I remember growing up and hearing "boy, you sure are skinny, don't you ever eat?" and such, all the time. I was 5'8" and weighed 115lbs and wore "slim" jeans and still had to cinch my belt up tight.
A small percentage of overweight people have thyroid or other medical issues, but the vast majority hide behind that excuse.

I saw this on CNN last night, is Jennifer Livingston to fat to be on the news?

She'd better have something damn interesting to say because I don't want to look at her. Of course, her ratings would go up if she wore a green dress because of the people who stopped to watch thinking it was Return of the Jedi.

Where do you think we get the term "Rubenesque" from and when does it date from?

Yup but Rubenesque wasn't anything like what wanders the streets today. People say Marilyn Monroe was chubby, maybe she was back then but she'd be pretty slim in comparison to most women today, she was 5'5 and 118 pounds, wearing a 1950's size 12 which is a size 8 today.

That's another interesting titbit, sizes in the US are not what they used to be, Marilyn's size 12 back then is a size 8 today, vanity sizing, another way to make US women think they are smaller than we really are. UK and European sizes haven't changed.

Quote:

Just the facts:
• Average woman’s weight in the 1960’s: 140.4 pounds. Average woman’s weight today: 152.2 and rising.
• Own a size 8 dress today? Don’t be so smug. A decade ago, that same dress would’ve been sold as a size 10.
• Ever wonder why you’re a size 8 but can’t manage to squeeze into your mother’s vintage size 10 skirt? That’s ’cause a size 10 from 1942 is equivalent to a size 2 today.
• Sixty years ago, the average American’s bottom was 2 inches smaller than today’s 16 inches.
• Most toilet seats are 14.5 inches wide.
• One-third of America’s women can’t buy bikini brief undies at Victoria’s Secret. Vicky’s doesn’t offer size X-Large (which fits 16-18) in bikini form. Good news though: High-end lingerie designer La Perla is prepping a line for women size 14 and up.

I'm guessing no, he's probably got a super efficient metabolism. I've got a friend who easily packs away twice what I eat, he's 6ft even, weighs about 65kg, he's been the same weight since he was 15 and does absolutely no exercise at all.

No, but I've always been actiive. I'm 53 now, and up to 165lbs. I used to ride centuries and metric centuries on my bike until I was in my early 40's and got hit by a car, which destroyed my shoulder. I still can outwork most of the young guys at work who always are guzzling their 5 Hour Energy drinks. They all eat lousy and don't expend any excess energy if they don't have to. I don't care what your metalbolism is, a certain amount of calorie intake equals a certain amount of calories. If you take in more than you burn off, you gain weight. If you take in fewer than you burn off, you lose weight. If you're sedentary, cut the intake.

It's certianly not your first post about "fatties". You're contempt for large people comes out in just about every topic so your opinion on this matter is well documented.

I mean seriously.
Also, you do not speak for a majority when it comes to this thread you started.
As far as the anchor women, whatever floats your boat. I'm surrounded by beautiful women all the time and don't need for a news anchor person to satisfy me. I just want the news to be informative and unbiased. I don't care if they're fat or skinny, male or female.

Nope but it started in the US and has expanded around the world. It hasn't been a US only problem for a very long time, it's just far more obvious in the US than anywhere else.

Rubbish, I lost 18kg in 6 months, it was easy all I did was stop eating crap and cut out carbonated drinks, started going to the gym twice a week and restarted playing squash. It just takes willpower.

Exactly. People take years to gain weight but when they can't lose it in 6 weeks, it's "too hard". It's just like I quit smoking "cold turkey". I did it--no problem. Many people just have no self control.

Well, Superfly, you go ahead and maintain your overweight. I'm sure you'll be delighted when diabetes-2 shows its face, if it hasn't already, and you enjoy injecting yourself.

I, for one, am very impressed with the weight loss Mr. KiwiRob has achieved. You see, I tend to get a little too round myself unless I'm careful, and for the last few years I haven't exactly been that. Too much food, too much crap food to be exact, and not enough exercise saw me gain around 20 kgs. Now, was I an American I would have been looking like the average person, but I'm not and there's no way 20 kg of fat should ever be considered "normal". What it is, in fact, is 20 kg of killing-you-slowly, and so I decided to do something about it. It's really not that hard, provided you've got a bit of willpower and the determination not to luck like a fat, miserable, slob.

I've lost 9 kg so far, in around 2 months. And it's ever so easy: Don't eat crap food, that'll be any kind of fast-food from any kind of vendor in case you wondered, no fizzy sugary drinks, cut right down on the beers and maintain a moderate dose of exercise. In my case, it's around 100 km a week on the bicycle. So nothing too hard, and yet the kilos are dropping off nicely thank you very much.
