Serbia Vs England: Disgraceful Scenes

Tue Oct 16, 2012 8:33 pm

Missiles thrown, monkey chants and worst of all, a melee propagated by Serbian players against the english whilst they're leaving the pitch!

It's about bloody time UEFA took action:

The monkey chants are despicable, but the actions of the Serbian players should be enough for severe sanctions to be imposed against the Serbs.

Shocking, but not altogether surprising. I've been on the receiving end of Serb racism myself. Of course, I'm not saying that everyone in Serbia is racist, or that it is a bad country or anything like that, but that perhaps they do have an issue with very overt and public displays of racism.

Not surprising at all. In Australia, when I was a kid, the Serbs and Croats, having crossed the world to start a better life, would burn down each others boys' soccer clubs, vandalise each other's churches and beat up each other a under 8's soccer games in otherwise quiet and affluent Australian suburbia. An Austrian friend who goes to Croatia often has been to towns where a weekend night out often involves Serb guys 'glassing' someone in the face for being in the wrong bar at the wrong time.

Say what you want: it's certainly not a 'racial' problem nor all Serbs, nor only Serbs, but let's admit that there's some major undigested angst in that culture to be dealt with.

This reminds me of a bunch of things that have happened in American sporting. Particularly in football (American version) where there is really no reason to hit people even more than what you already have, especially after the game is over. But then again, the fans should be ashamed of themselves as well

A few American Examples of way out of line sport altercations

Interesting you say that... It was in Australia where I witnessed it too. A family member married into a Serb family, and even before the ceremony, the racial remarks and a general element of supposed cultural superiority became rapidly evident.

The marriage ended in deep acrimony over the subject after about 12 months.

I really have to wonder after reading this message thread do the Serbs have problems with being just too provincial in their world view. I don't think the majority of Serbs are that way, but those who are....

A lot of countries have that problem, not just Serbia. Dare I say it, there's a few in my own country who could do with a bit of attitude adjustment.

Is anyone surprised, really?

That is just how they are, majority of them. Same all over Eastern Europe, but the Serbs take it to a different level.

That may be a big deal in Europe, but not by North American standards. This would be typical of a NHL post-season game in Montreal or Vancouver. The fans of the CFL team in Regina are particularly bad. I remember when they hurled beer cans at the BC Lions. Some also cornered the players in downtown Regina and started brawling with them. Also, as much as I hate it, it's not uncommon to see NHL fans start-up the US vs. Canada BS. To top it all off, some NHL fans will boo their own team. To illustrate my point, here are a few examples:
