Apple Makes Major Exec Changes

Tue Oct 30, 2012 4:57 pm

Apple has announced major changes in the Senior VP level.

Scott Forstall has been relieved and will leave Apple next year.

John Browett, head of Apple Stores, is leaving the company immediately.

Forstall has been in charge of iOS, the mobile OS used in Apple's mobile products. He goes back to the Steve Jobs years at NeXT, but has been described as contentious and difficult to get along with. One report has indicated that Jonathan Ive won't even be in the same room with him anymore.

My bet is that he stays until 2013 (a dozen or so weeks) for tax reasons. he's a long enough time employe to get that consideration.

Browett has been at Apple for less than a year and hasn't performed well. He cut staff and put off store repairs. Brought his Dixon's approach with him and that simply doesn't work at Apple Stores. He has had to reverse too much of his decisions and it doesn't look like Apple felt he was worth keeping until his next stock delivery was made.

Maybe in iOS7 the design might actually be good.

Was inenvitable that they were going to make changes, the iOS design was quickly becoming a terrible embarrassment compared to both the exterior of their hardware as well as Android and Windows Phone. Skeumorphic UI stuff has a very "early 2000s" feel to it.

The problems with Maps is really the only real embarrassment and Tim Cook is putting a lot of weight into improving that.

Skeumorphic UI can be OK in some areas. I don't mind it on the Mac in Calendar, it's not bad in Notes. I don't use game center (not even on my iPhone) so I can't comment on that.

I believe that Ive can deliver a better user interface than Forstall and that is the reason why it was "safe" to move Forstall out. It will take a year or so before Ive can address everything he is taking on, but it will be interesting to follow.

The overall leadership is very strong at Apple after the changes. This is what Apple is presenting:

How so? I haven't exposed myself to Android, Symbian or Windows Phone, but I like the lack of chintz and glitter in iOS... as well as in OS X, for that matter. So I'd appreciate it if you could explain what you mean by "terrible embarrassment".

But that's the thing, there is no "lack of chintz and glitter" - there is way too much of it. Apple does minimalist exterior design of it's products, and then fills it with software that looks like this:

It looks tacky and outdated, and absolutely does not fit the industrial design.

Bowett does not surprise me at all; Scott Forestall does. He joined Jobs at NeXT and flowed into Apple. At least we won't see skeuomorphism with Ive running the show. That was one part of Apple's design that I was never a fan of.

Err... you were talking about "the iOS design", do you have any criticisms of that? All of the examples that you gave are apps, hence my question.

Anyway, example no. 1 only looks like that if you don't change the font - you only get three to choose from, but Helvetica is among them. The rest of the design is a bit "ye olde" style, but highly functional.
Example no. 2... what is that? I've never seen it, so I cannot comment.
Example no. 3, iBooks, certainly doesn't glitter and it's as chintzy as an IKEA bookshelf.
Example no. 4: Is that a special theme for the music player or an "aftermarket" app? I've never seen that either.
Example no. 5, the compass... I don't know if you can change the looks of that, but it's not exactly the centrepiece of the system anyway.
Example no. 6, the Game Center - I'll give you that one, although I personally don't care one iota about it.

You're probably right, but I do hope that they won't keep reinventing the wheel just to make everything look "techy" or some such. I actually like the compass, for example.

That's Find my Friends.

That's not standard. I'm thinking it may be Garage Band, but I wouldn't know--never purchased it for iOS.

Agreed--Game Center does not look good; however, I've never used it and I don't intend to.

Thanks, that explains why I've never seen it. I tend to use another function of my iPhone whenever I want to find friends.

Same here - the only game I play on my phone is "Lufthansa Top Trumps", so I don't exactly have a use for the Game Center.

You're not alone on that one. Never have used Find my Friends, and don't need to, either...

Example 4 is the Podcasts app.

I'm looking forward to see what happens with iOS with Craig & Jony in charge.

Apple has a Teflon aura. No matter what happens they smell like roses. It seems like every other day they come out with some new and improved gee gaw. BFD! Apple reminds me of all those Twilight and other hipster vampire movies. Like the energizer bunny both keep going and going and make a sh*t load of money while doing it. Must be nice!

I do beg your pardon? You must have forgot about the Foxconn scandal: various IT companies have outsourced their manufacturing to Foxconn, but Apple received the criticism when the suicides were reported.

They're no more or less altruistic than many other big corporations, it's just that their product and marketing philosophies are quite different from the rest pf the pack. That's why some people love them, others hate them and most have slight or no preferences.
