Has The Price Of An Arugula Gone Down?

Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:43 pm

Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately? See what they charge for arugula?
4 years ago, candidate Barack Obama asked this very question.
Since he's been the President for almost 4 years now, had both houses of Congress for 2 years, instituted new nutrition standards that have led to students not being allowed to eat lunches their parents make for them, appointed a nutrition czar and his own wife taking on the issue - I must ask, has the cost of an arugula gone down?

Total non-issue. Shortly after that, the LA Times reported that the 99¢-only stores were selling 11-oz. tubs of it. Almost anything at Whole Foods is going to be expensive relative to other stores.

Can I at least ask the question?
I haven't lived in the US in over 2 years and I just want to know if the price of an arugula has come down yet.

So was candidate Obama full of it or just out of touch?

You already said that the 99¢-only stores were selling 11-oz. tubs of it.
No need to be so defensive.

Not being defensive at all. You brought the subject up, and I'm trying to help. The onus is on you to provide a starting price to compare to though. No one's going to do your research for you if you're simply pulling at straws.

No.
Candidate Obama felt that the supposed high cost of an arugula was important enough to bring up on the campaign trail in 2008. I'm just asking if it's gone down. It's a simple yes or no question.
You already said that the 99¢-only stores were selling 11-oz. tubs of it in 2008, so I doubt the cost was any different in 2007.
Sounds like you're implying candidate Barack was either full of it or just out of touch.
Since he mentioned Whole Foods, has the cost at least gone down there?
I only bought beer at Whole Foods and the only time I'd get arugula was as a pizza topping at my favorite Italian restaurant in S.F. which I haven't ate at since I've moved.

You mean like Bush 41 and his famous grocery store scanner moment?

The way you should have formed your question, to avoid appearing to be grasping at straws, would be to say something like "arugula was $X.XX per pound at Whole Foods when Obama made his comments in 2007. What's the relative price today at Whole Foods?"

What the price of it was at the 99¢-only store isn't a factor, really. It was a snippet in an LA Times blog that was showing that the price of arugula was mostly irrelevant. Sorry that point was lost on you.

Who's grasping at straws now?

I'm merely asking if you have a starting point to compare to. It's your thread! I'm more than happy to stop into Whole Foods tomorrow or the next day when I'm in that part of downtown and check for you.

Yes, amazing, 8th reply and you still don't know the price from 2007? That does sound like grasping at straws to me.

Anyway, I'll update you later this week! That should give you some time to come up with the price from 2007.

I never priced arugula at Whole Foods in 2007 but I DO have a right to ask if the price have come down.
Again, you are being very defensive and upset that I asked a question you don't approve of.
Perhaps you could have just left it up to the dozens of Obama supporters here to answer the question.

I've googled this thing I've never heard of and I find it's roquette ? Funny as I'm eating some in front of my computer right now. It's mixed with other types of salad though so I wouldn't know the price of it.

If I knew what the price was at Whole Foods in 2007, then there would be no need for me to ask the question here.
So has the price come down?
Yes or no?

I've had it in salads and as a pizza topping but never bought it at Whole Foods.
As you can see, simpling asking if the price has come down can get a lot of people angry.

I had no idea the arugula price was such a hot potato.
Whole Foods is an expensive store regardless of it's location. They tend to be in upscale neighborhoods. Candidate Obama in 2008 was simply making a point about the high cost of eating healthy foods and Whole Foods sales healthy products. I actually agree with the point Obama was trying to make. I'll confess that the only products I ever bought from Whole Foods when I lived in San Francisco was their great selection of micro-brews (I was such a beer snob).
Today, 4 years later I just want to know if there has been a change in price since he has been the President that has taken measures to encourage healthier eating.
I see no harm in asking the question but instead I've been subjected to online bullying (another issue Obama has addressed) and I hadn't got a straight answer. I find this surprising considering the number of Obama supporters that chimed in.

This is A.net. You should know better than to ask a question like that.

An innocent enquiry might have simply said, "in 2007 the price was...What is it now?" But with the reference to Obama asking the same question did you really, honestly expect people to not think this was a pointed question, given your known change of opinion on Obama? We are are all entitled to change opinions based on experience, so that is no criticism. Don't get me wrong: Obama/ Romney I have no say either way but many A.netters are known to have fixed views and dropping a name (be it one or the other) is like a red rag to a bull.

And no, I don't know whether it has come down for two reasons. One, I had to look up what it actually is (    it's called rocket here) and secondly, like most fresh foods it is a seasonal product and the price fluctuates from week to week - just like strawberries, apples and cauliflower. However, I can tell you that my local Woolworth's is offering 30% off all wine when you buy six bottles this week.

I just picked up some lovely Shiraz Merlot. Cheers!

Shouldn't matter 'who' ask the question. It is a legitimate question and I don't attack members for asking questions, even if I know their views from past threads. I don't like to carry grudges. If I can't answer or attempt to answer a question, I don't bother posting.

Pack a suitcase full of those and head on up to BKK. Wine taxes are near 400% here in Thailand.

Agreed but as you know, some people are prone to see things that may not be there. That is why I often refrain from commenting in some some threads. They go along the lines of "he this, no he didn't, yes he did, but your lot did worse... shifting the goal posts, without actually addressing the original problem.

Sheesh, that is steep. If I had my way I'd be on a plane to BKK as soon as possible but I have had to put travel on hold as I look after a parent with Moderate to Severe Alzheimer's. But I would love to share a glass of wine (or beer) with you because I am sure that you have some very amusing and frightful tales to share. Your recent trip to Bangladesh being just one example.

Wikipedia is your friend, Charley. A common synonym is rucola.

And here's the receipe for my European-Union-Sandwich:

1 croissant (France) or lye croissant (Germany) or half-sized ciabatta (Italy)
butter or home made herb mayonnaise
Parma ham (Italy / Czech Republic)
Parmesan cheese (the original Parmigiano-Reggiano made in Italy not its American copy - sorry! Thin slice(es) *not* grated!)
Edit dried tomatoes
arugula

Alternatively:
Focaccia (Italy), artichokes (or asparagus), pastrami (Romania), arugula, edit: and dried tomatoes

Goes well with a Pilsener style beer (Czech Rep., Belgium or Germany) or red wine such as a Chianti.
