WiFI Connectivity Issue - Need Help.

Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:06 pm

I have a :
HTC Aria (AT&T), unlocked (not using AT&T). Using this phone as a secondary unit with a pre-paid SIM. Mostly for In/Out coming calls.
Occasionally, some internet (emails, etc) where there's WiFI available. And here's the situation :
Just found out, I can't get any Wi-Fi signal, unless I'm near a router. Any router (with the phone, of course). What gives?
I've already spent over two hours (today) checking for a solution on the web. I believe I've reached the end of the web, without any help!!!
So, anyone out there would know any possible solution for this? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

Are you confusing WiFi and 3G? You can only connect to the net through WiFi if you're within range of a router. 3G should be available through the mobile network.

Yeah I second this, is mobile data included on your pre-paid sim? So does it include a data plan like 1GB of Edge/3G/4G per month or whatever?

Your wifi signal comes from a router....if you're not near a router, no wi-fi. Simple as that.

Just like with a laptop or a tablet, you have to log onto the WiFi connection unless you have that connection saved on the device and your device automatically connects to it.

3G should be available through the mobile network.

That will depend on the network the mobile virtual network operator is piggybacking on (Most pre-paid cell companies piggyback on the network of another company.). In some areas, the coverage may be EDGE regardless of the device, other areas 3G or 4G (provided the device is 4G capable). I have my BlackBerry through a MVNO that piggybacks on T-Mobile's network and while a large part of the T-Mobile network where I live is 3G/4G (although my device is not a 4G device), once you get out past certain distances from town, the coverage drops to EDGE and there are pockets within the 3G/4G network where the coverage is still EDGE.

thanks for your replies, fellas. But let me explain.

I understand the difference between WiFi and data plan. On this particular phone, I only use for calls and/or any internet or email, whenever I can get Wifi (either at home or at work). So why pay for two data plans. I have a data plan on my other phone (Galaxy S2) which i only use for business. I'm in Real Estate, so I need more than 1 phone. Anyone looking for a house?

Of course, If I'm not in range of said router, no connectivity there (duh). But, i do need to be within 1 foot of any router in order to get a connection. Get it? That's what I meant ''near a router''.

Anyway, that's it.thanks.

My interpretation of what you said is that you have to be unusually close to a WiFI enabled router in order to pick up a WiFI signal? If so, I suggest the following troubleshooting steps if you haven't already done so:

- Try disabling your WiFI security *temporarily* (WiFI encryption can sometimes cause connection issues for some devices)
- Try an alternative router
- Try connecting to another router located on different premises (to rule out the possibility of it being caused by interference)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that your phone may have a problem with its built in WiFI adapter/antenna.

If you want to get geeky, install the following adroid app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&feature=search_result

and it will show you graphically the signal level that the phone is getting.

If you run it on your 2nd phone looking at the difference may help you nail down if the HTC just happens to have a sucky wifi setup or not.

One additional thought, is the phone's OS up to date? This could be a bug that affected a small number of users on a certain build of the phone's OS that was fixed with an update.
