Who's Going To Play For The BCS Championship? (US)

Mon Nov 19, 2012 4:02 am

I'd like to see Notre Dame get donkey stomped by Alabama (to use an LSU euphemism for winning) even though the thought of Bama winning another legit national title makes me wanna    Especially since Alabama claims 1973 as one of their 14 national championships even though Notre Dame beat them 24-23 in the Sugar Bowl that year.

I don't get the BCS (a totally flawed format that's broken) bowls and how the selectin works. If ND can go to the National Title Game as an Independant, then why couldn't Boise State play in a BCS game, like they could have in 2005 (I think....the Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma)?

Boise State got shafted that year going undefeated. I prefer we have a playoff format instead.

The winner of the SEC championship (barring either team losing this week) will go to the National Championship game. This means Georgia, who my Gamecocks beat the Hell out of 35-7, has a chance to win the title. I will be so pissed if that happens.

And Notre Dame will go, barring a loss to Southern Cal this weekend. I just read Barkley is out, so I don't see Notre Dame losing, but who knows. No one saw Oregon and K-State losing this past weekend.

Simply, strength of schedule. Boise usually plays 1 BCS Automatic Qualifier school per season, and it's always at a neutral site. Notre Dame plays Southern Cal, Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, and Purdue. That's not an easy schedule.

Not saying that's right, but that's how they do it. I feel like any undefeated team should have a shot at the National Championship. The system pisses me off because their argument for keeping it is "the regular season is like the playoffs." In that case, wouldn't you be eliminated with one loss? I really hated the 2008 season, when Florida (who had one loss, at home, against an unranked team) played for, and won, the national championship, while an undefeated Utah team beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

I hate that I have to pull for Lane Kiffin, although they have very little chance with Barkley out. ND truly had the luck of the Irish against Stanford and Pitt.

Any of the top 6 teams have the potential to play in the BCS championship game. The next few weeks could be very interesting!

But for the national championship, I just don't want the SEC to win it again.. I'm tired of them.

The difference between Notre Dames schedule and Boise State's is night and day. The weight of the schedule is so different in college that the some of the ideas ideas folks have about pro-style playoffs making everything right and fair are fantasy. There is a playoff system needed, but NCAA football still needs ranking systems to achieve any measure of reatlity to the outcomes for the seasons.

An SEC schedule beats the hell out of most others, and there is no other team that deliberately schedules their seasons like Notre Dame....just not that many patsies they put up there. Love them or hate them, and it seems to be one or the other, they play a real schedule and for them to be undefeated at this point indicates that they're a great team. My Bulldogs are ranked 3rd and I have to admit that they're not as solid a third as ND is a first. That said, it's pretty cool that UGA controls it's own destiny right now. Three large hurdles to clear, and anyone discounting the rivalry with GaTech is just being contrary....those kids are UP for this game....and then Alabama at the SEC championship, but it's doable. One game at a time.

Especially with what is now at stake for UGA. Ga Tech will bring the heat. Fortunately it is a home game for you.

I'll go with Notre Dame this year. There is going to be a while before anyone else gets on my list. Probably Alabama - just so Notre Dame can take them down

Agree with what you are saying. The SEC also does it scheduling well. They back load the cupcakes at the end of the season to pad things. Whereas most of the other school are finishing out conference play this time of year. Look at how many FCS schools the SEC played this past week. It is all about securing BCS rights and Heisman standings.

As far as bias in the polls, if we took out the humans completely and just looked at the computers the last three weeks, this is what we get. The number in parenthesis is their actual ranking with humans.

Week 11
1) Alabama (1)
2) Notre Dame (4)
3) Kansas State (2)
4) Florida (6)
5) Oregon (3)
6) Georgia (5)
7) LSU (7)
8t) South Carolina (8)
8t) Oregon State (11)
10) Oklahoma (12)

Week 12
1) Notre Dame (3)
2) Kansas State (1)
3) Florida (6)
4) Oregon (2)
5) Alabama (4)
6) Georgia (5)
7) LSU (7)
8t) Texas A&M (8)
8t) South Carolina (9)
10) Oklahoma (12)

Week 13 - Current Week
1) Notre Dame (1)
2) Florida (4)
3) Alabama (2)
4) Kansas State (6)
5) Stanford (8)
6) Georgia (3)
7) Oregon (5)
8) LSU (7)
9) Oklahoma (13)
10) Texas A&M (9)

So what this tells me is voters definitely want the SEC more than anything. The computers are trying to correct it by actually following what they are doing on the field. Though I don't really agree in Alabama jumped 2 spots for beating an FCS team, it is what it is.

Seriously? You think the a WAC teams schedule is on the same level as a SEC or PAC 12. Well OK maybe a PAC 12.

I hope ND and 'Bama go at it and 'Bama gets their tide flushed.

So what other metric should the BCS use? Are you telling me that a one loss K State team is equal to a one loss Bama team? In the last decade, the SEC has beaten Oklahoma in '03, OSU in '06 and '07, Oklahoma in '08, Texas '09, Oregon '10, and LSU in '11. Sure you're bored of the SEC, but until a team outside the SEC wins the NC, how can anyone complain when the SEC is in the end of the season BCS mix?

More or less, strength of schedule acts as tiebreakers between similar teams. Of course some teams can't really compete if their conference is poor or in a down year. But if SOS is not an important factor at the top, what should be?

I'm glad you asked! Record and offensive points earned. That would solve sime if the tie breaker problems.

This is why I hate the SOS argument: Stanford beats Oregon. Oregon is obviously the better team, right? But they lost that game. SOS does not apply here, IMO, it's how the team performs on the field and their record.

That's kind of a crazy idea.

Say, for purpose of discussion, Louisiana Tech had beaten Utah State on Saturday and got to 10-1. They're in a bad conference, have't beaten a ranked team, but have scored more points than anyone in the country. You're saying they should then be #2 and playing Notre Dame in the national championship game?

Your idea would absolutely destroy college football.

First off, you are severely biased against defense with your points scored tiebreaker. Some of the best teams are focused around their defense, and don't score a lot of points. And some really crappy conferences with habitually bad defenses are used to football scores looking like basketball scores. That should be rewarded? Alabama scored a lot of points last year, but there are always 9-6 grind it out SEC games between top teams. They probably wouldn't have won any points scored competitions, but they had the best defense in the country, and without a doubt were the best team in the country.

I think you're going for a MOV- (margin of victory) argument. That was actually recently eliminated from the BCS computers to essentially improve sportsmanship after people got upset with Oregon and Wisconsin laying 80+ points on teams. I'd be onboard with margin of victory being more important (in tandem with SOS), but the benefit should top out around a 30 point win.

Eh? Total points proves nothing. Do you honestly think Oregon would score the same amount of points if they played in the SEC or Big 10 for that matter? The defenses are significantly better in both conferences. No offense to the Pac 12, but defense is not stressed whatsoever. Look what happened to West Virginia and Oregon when they play a team whose defense has a pulse. Oregon's schedule is truly pathetic...

Three teams in the top 25 (Stanford, 8th, OSU, 16th and Arizona, 23), and the rest of the teams have an average rank of 62/124 (Tennessee Tech not included, ranked outside of top 124)...

Are we forgetting that the Big 10 has the likes of mighty Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and Minnesota in it? Oregon beat ASU which at the time had one of the top 10 defenses in the country, a game where Oregon scored 44 points in less than 20 minutes.

Oregon doesn't have a crap defense either, they did hold Arizona scoreless. They would still be a good team, they would still be able to win 90% of their games, would the margin be as big? No. But the Big 10 is over-rated, especially this year.

If Oregon was in the Big 10 (or 18, whatever they are now), the defenses of Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, MSU, Michigan, would adjust and adapt to Oregon's offense, making it much less effective. The offensive effectiveness would be even less if Oregon were in the SEC (see Oregon vs Auburn and LSU).
