Beckham, LA Galaxy Win 2nd Straight MLS Cup

Sun Dec 02, 2012 8:50 am

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...y-win-2nd-straight-mls-cup?cc=5901

The 4th best team in the West played the 5th best team the the East for the league championship. How embarrassing. But anyways, this brings an end to the David Beckham MLS era. How will you remember his stint in the league, favorably or unfavorably? It sure seemed like he was injured a lot, but at the same time I wanted to see him do well and liked having him here in the MLS. The league sure has a lot more going for it compared to when he first arrived, though I'm not sure how much of that is solely related to him.

I guess there was a rumor of Frank Lampard coming over to the Galaxy. He could step in and do fine. I'm not a huge fan of his because he thrives with great teammates surrounding him, but he would do well in the MLS. Maybe Kaka as well.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Can't see Frank Lampard heading for the US any time soon. His fiancee is a national TV presenter here, and his kids live with his former partner. Thats two reasons that make re location across the Atlantic difficult.
His place at Chelsea looks in danger at present as the new manager doesn't appear to want him, however he has a contract to the end of the season, and with the way things are at Chelsea even though Rafa Benitez has only been there 10 days his present chances of surving to the end of the season look thin to say the least. Three games, no wins and the fans singing "your getting sacked in the morning" and "he's only a fat Spanish waiter"

Lampard's usefulness would probably depend on what Landon Donovan does. They play relatively similar positions.

Woooo! Good job Galaxy!!! That acquisition is probably the best sports acquisition in a while. I hope the MLS gets more popular here in the USA

No number of Seattle Sounders adds on Root Sports is going to change that

Attendance has risen by 5K per game nationwide since Beckham came over. MLS is now the 8th most attended soccer league in the world.

And the Sounders have one of the absolute best followings in MLS. They are one of the few teams around that has a genuine home field advantage that rivals that of comparably-sized stadiums in Europe. It's truly awesome to watch them on TV.

I'm neither a fan of Beckham or the Galaxy, but he did a fantastic job of raising the profile of the league.

Cheers,

The funny thing is that us soccer-loving white guys are being joined millions upon millions of Latinos and Asians. So it matters less and less what the NASCAR crowd wants to believe about soccer. It's a slow process but this sport is here to stay.

Thank you David Beckham for your contribution.

My relative ambivalence to soccer here in the US has been challenged since you can't seem to get away from Seattle Sounders coverage in Seattle. So, I'll concede that the sport has received more attention here since he came. That's also due to the US Women's national team doing very well in the Olympics.

It is interesting though to see the difference in new fans to the sport here. Many of my friends are Portland Timbers fans and they have been following their team for years and years. The Sounders fans look like they met someone at the Microsoft Commons that invited them to a game so they all went out and bought new gear.

I heard somewhere that he increased the average salary of a player in MLS from around $60K/year to $120k/year. That means they're increasing revenue through attendance and marketing so he's done something for the sport in the US. That can't be argued.

The Seattle Sounders get TWICE the attendance of the Seattle Mariners. Who on earth thought that would have been possible?

Sporting Kansas City consistently sold out their stadium all year, with many games at overcapacity due to standing room only tickets. Easily became one of Kansas City's favorite teams due to the excitement of having a successful sports team. The atmosphere is legit, I'd recommend an SKC game if you have the opportunity.

And don't forget that this is one of the most financially sound professional sports leagues in the country. Almost every team is profitable. Becks arrival probably helped that and he's done an awesome job at raising the profile of the league. I' m actually saddened to see him go because he was a great ambassador for the game here. And Becks said he'd be back in an ownership capacity. He's a smart guy, so he sees a good opportunity here.

Kaka wants to stay in Europe and he seems convinced that he can still do well at Real Madrid, even though the past three years have proved otherwise. Lampard is still pretty good and he wants to stay at Chelski. I would be shocked if he actually made the move.

The interest in American soccer is growing outside America as well. During the last FIFA world cup, I remember a lot of people following the US team with much interest, especially after they topped the group ahead of England (by the skin of their teeth). And in the match against Ghana, I remember the majority of people in the pub where I was watching the match were supporting the US. That may have been due to the fact that the US team were the underdogs, but the fact that people took notice is undeniable. I think the sport will continue to grow in the US.

Sporting Kansas City

I love them! I saw a game back in 2007 when I was in KC for a few months (primarily due to the fact that I don't understand any other US sport), and often keep a check on them online to see how they're doing . They were called the Wizards then, which was a much better name than Sporting KC imo.

'Cause baseball is so terribly boring.

Whereas football (a.k.a soccer), once you get past the low scoring, is a game continually in motion played amongst a festive atmosphere. I don't know about other MLS teams, but the Sounders have done a nice job of bringing in the European style and game culture, which adds nicely to the experience.

Of course, more baseball games are played than soccer games, so I guess there would be more total Mariners tickets sold than Sounders tickets sold.
