Super typhoon Pablo is about to hit the island of Mindanao within the next hours.
I hope the people there take the warnings by the Filipino meteorological department PAGASA more serious than before the typhoon "Sendong" in December 2011, which killed thousands in Northern Mindanao and Visayas.
Most of the people didn´t take the warnings seriously, because Midanao rarely gets struck by typhoons and were surprised by flashfloods while sleeping.
This time "Pablo" is going to hit Mindanao headon and is going to cross the island. It is currently just off the shore of Surigao del Sur, where an uncle of mine lives. It will later cross the island, also affecting the northern coast, including the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, where thousands were killed last year.
My fiancée comes from Iligan City and I was just there until last week. My future sister in law, who is a Barangay Kagawad (approximately a municipal councilor), is currently organising to get the inhabitants of a squatter area (slum) at the coast to a safer location higher up a hill (where she lives). I wish I was there to lend a hand, since I know quite a lot of the people there.
