For those who have never visited NYC the 6 line is considered one of the most crowded in the city.

Well when I am in the big apple, i tend to avoid the subway altogether    And any other form of mass transit. You see this too often these days.

The mass transit is fine. This is no different than road rage shootings.

I am sure the numbers comparison would show that the subway is safer than driving in Florida with loud music....do we have a thread on that yet?

Safer than being Black and young in Florida in general. Apparently being Black and young gets you shot in "self defense" because being Black and young is apparently a life-threatening behavior towards men who are White and middle-aged. After all, Trayvon Martin wasn't driving.

Which is good news. PHX787 is merely young, so he has nothing to worry about!

In any event, you are generally quite safe on the NYC subway. You are surrounded by witnesses and usually they will be willing to help if you're genuinely in trouble.

We're not going to discuss Florida....the more north you go, the more south it gets

Either way I've seen my fair share of crazy crap in my lifetime.... It makes me glad my parents raised me properly.

*goes into an asthma attack*

For all the horrible things that happen, I've also been involved in more than one medical emergency on the NYC subway and it's amazing how many people will help out without even thinking about it.

Crazy people on public transit is definitely a thing, but in New York at least the subway is an excellent way to get around. I wouldn't base whether or not I use a transit service based on who rides it except in rather extreme circumstances, after all as my great-grandmother said the roads are full of "damn fools and jackasses."

You must spend a great deal of money on rental cars and cabs, or you must never go there, because not using mass transit requires cash - and lots of it. I know, since I have owned and stored multiple cars in NYC (as many as five at a time) and I lived there for 27 years, the majority of them in "the bad old days."

Actually you hardly see this at all.

I can say for certain that it's very safe there nowadays - one of the safest big cities in the country, and in fact, it is arguably safer than it has ever been. Crimes like this are at a fifty year low in NYC - and prior to that, statistics get unreliable.

If you think the subway is dangerous in 2012, you'd have really been scared of it in 1987.

The only reason I would avoid the subway in NY is because I rode it everyday for over 8 years, while in school. And, everywhere my parents wanted us to go before that. It no longer intrigues me. I'll ride it if suits my mission for the day, but I'd just as soon drive or be driven. Traffic isn't that bad if you know your way around and know what places to avoid.

You want to see a dangerous subway system...look at the NYC Subway system in the 70's and 80's.
When seconds count...the police are minutes away.

Well when I'm there, I take Ultimate JetCharters to MMU and their free shuttle to Midtown...then walk everywhere   Manhattan is very walkable as long as you avoid the bad parts
