McAfee Seeking Asylum In Guatemala?

Wed Dec 05, 2012 9:57 am

It seems that seeking asylum by person suspected of committing crimes is becoming quite fashionable. First Assange walked into the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, now it appears that John McAfee wants to apply for asylum in Guatemala.

McAfee, who is wanted by police in Belize in connection with the murder of fellow American Gregory Faull, with whom McAfee had quarreled, has crossed into Guatemala after evading police.

According to Al Jazeera his lawyer will be presenting the request, although rather bizarrely he is quoted as saying, "He will go back to Belize once his situation here in Guatemala is made legal." The lawyer is also reported as saying, "He can go to the United States, there is no problem with that... We have asked the US embassy for support with our (asylum) request."

If McAfee is innocent and simply fears persecution, why doesn't he simply go back to the US? The US doesn't normally just extradite people without following laid down procedures and where any decisions are subject to appeal by his lawyers. Why appeal for asylum if you then intend to return to Belize? None of this makes sense.

Is McAfee, in the words of Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, "bonkers?"
“Not to laugh, not to cry, not to hate, but understand.” Spinoza

It is ironic that a person who founded and has his name attached to it - McAffe computer security software - is trying to bypass 'security' forces due to allegations of murder.

Looks like the Guatemalan Government will extradite him back to Belize in the following hours.
This because he enter illegal to Guatemala.
