The only info that seems to have been released so far isthat he was 78 yrs old and passed away in Tampa, FL.

My oldest daughter served in "his" Gulf War and had the deepest, utmost respect for the man (as I do, of course), and I think he's gone too soon. regards...jack

This man is the clear definition of what a General is supposed to be. While a lot can be written about him him and how he so overshadows some of our recent Generals all I can do is wish him peace and send my thoughts to his family.

RIP

Quoting Ken777 (Reply 4):

You said it perfectly Ken.

Met GEN Schwartzkopf years ago at Ft Bragg. Wish I could have had a conversation with him. Maybe we'll talk on the other side.

Rest in Peace Sir.

Rest in Peace to one of the all time great military leaders America has seen.

If you haven't read his autobiography, I cannot recommend it enough. It is an amazing book that I have read at least three times, and will probably re-download it to reread it.

Rest in Peace, sir. Thank-you for your long and dedicated career, and thanks to your family for sharing you with us.

I have the utmost respect for the General, a fellow Jersey boy who's father founded the New Jersey State Police. Rest in Peace General.

He flew on my plane as a passenger along with SECDOD Cheney and CJCS Powell when I was stationed at Andrews to Saudi Arabia to explain to the King what would happen if Saddam Hussein decided to come further south. Had no clue then who was the big 4 star with the rest of the brass on that jet.
I would help you but it is not in the contract

RIP to a fine general.

A tough call, the first Gulf War, a leap into the unknown, first large scale US military action since Vietnam - with all the uncertainly and worry that came with that.
A large and in places fragile coalition to hold together.

'Stormin Norman' looked like a sometimes unflattering caricature of a US General, appearances were very deceptive though. He had the political and diplomatic smarts to match his obvious military ones.
He could also handle the press well too.

Wasn't afraid to change his views as well, he was not a fan of Special Forces at first, prior to the fighting, after the Gulf conflict he was a welcome guest at both Hereford Barracks here and no doubt, the similar SF establishments in the US too.

A great man deserves his name spelled correctly in the title of this thread. Please fix it.

Sorry to see him to,

You have to admit his, "luckiest man in Iraq" press conference was one of the great pre-PowerPoint conference moments

He and General de la Billière did a great service to the Arab World, and in a way also to Europe. The two men carried through a decision of the League of Arab States, and were an excellent team. Just imagine that they brought together troops from the USA, Britain, France, Italy, Egypt and Syria for joint action.
