GPS For Iphone

Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:34 am

Folks,
I need a gps for my 4s iphone to use when travelling, mostly north america, and without roaming data.

Anyone use one of the free ones or ones that only cost 10-12 euro?

Any recommendations?

Thanks

That makes no sense. Do you mean a sim plan?

Why would you want to pay for receiving GPS when you can get it free? My phone (not an Iphone, I think they're over-hyped personally) has GPS built in that works anywhere without the need for data, so no need for roaming. Just download the relevant maps before I set off. I don't see why you should pay any extra for using GPS on the move. Can you not disable any data needs while using the GPS function abroad? It may be cheaper purchasing a dedicated hand held GPS if not, or go back to traditional methods and get maps (which I prefer).

I think the OP would like to know of any apps that have the GPS maps stored, so he doesn't incur data roaming charges.
There are some apps that do this, though not having an iphone I can't recommend any.
I haven't tried, but can you use Google Maps and cache the route / area before roaming?

It's outside your budget but I have tested the TomTom GPS app for iPhone during a two week bike trip across the alps and it is amazingly good. It is actually better than their stand alone GPS.

So, if you can spare the few more bucks you need to get it, you should go for that. It contains the maps so no roaming charges. And there's an option in it to deactivate data download (such as traffic, local infos...).
Cheers

My mistake then, it wasn't clear. This is another reason I don't rate Iphones. I can do all that on my current phone already, no need for additional apps, it all comes as standard with free download of maps too. Iphones are good, but over-hyped with the competition offering products on par and often surpassing. But then they don't have an 'i' in front of them that's all the rage at the moment!

on the iphone there is an app called NavFree... it has maps for several regions of the world... pretty good...even does navigation (like a car system). It does not require a data connection to operate (ie is free to roam with).
I have the USA one, UK&Ireland, Australia&NZ.

I can spend 100's but i've noticed that some new gps apps that cost much less so if they work i'll spemd less.

Get an Android phone, free Google Maps, cache entire regions. Job done.

i had a look.
you need to zoom in and out of the area you'll be in. Don't switch off the phone and don't go outside zoomed area when travelling.

City Maps 2Go

That's all I ever need and use. It's cheap as chips and you can download as many maps as you like as often as you like because only the app is payware, the map data is freeware.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

It's the same with Apple Maps in iOS 6, which has worked very well for me so far.
