Jennifer Lawrence: Acting ‘is Stupid’!

Sat Jan 05, 2013 8:18 pm

It's great to see a Hollywood actress that actually thinks like the rest of us...

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/2013-g...rence-acting-stupid-213119435.html

I think acting and playing sports professionally are hugely overrated, however, it's very rare for a famous actor or athlete to realize this fact and say it publicly.

You do realize that the idolization is our fault, right?

We insist on paying high prices in order to support their salaries.

We insist on knowing every detail of their lives.

We insist on elevating these people to god-like status.

It is our fault, along with a hefty dose of narcissism that makes a bunch of these people think they actually matter.

Kudos to Mrs. Lawrence for seeing through the veil...let's see how long it lasts.

But, that is what the free market is about. We get to decide what we want to pay for and how much we will pay for it.

I'd wager a lot of them feel close to the same way. They just don't say it.

I mean, airplane photography is pretty stupid too. But I don't go around saying it. Why should I?

Not to mention:

Quoting fr8mech (Reply 1):

And let's take a different artistic medium:

Music means a LOT to me. I mean, a crapload. It's one of the most important things in my life. There are a bunch of songs that have a lot of meaning to me, because they've been present or helped me get through certain times in my life.

I very much appreciate my favorite musicians still making music, and not deciding to go find a "real job" because what they do doesn't matter.

So anyway, feel how you feel, but I don't know why we should expect an actor/musician/artist to go around stating what they do is stupid and meaningless.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I paid no attention to this woman before this thread, but I can't disagree with anything she says. It's a job that she does.

That's great but that doesn't mean it means anything to the artists. Sure, many actors, directors, writers, and musicians have passion projects that they absolutely love, some of which are popular and some of which aren't, but a lot of what they do is handed to them by an agent.

Same with athletes. They don't really care about the fans or tradition or even their coach. Some don't even care that much for the game. I highly recommend reading and listening to former safety Matt Bowen for some serious doses of NFL reality.

It's not. If most actors and musicians felt that what they did was stupid and meaningless, they'd find something else to do where they could make more money. Nobody's in that business who doesn't want to be - it's too tough a life.

But just because you don't think something is stupid doesn't mean that you think it's vitally important to society. You can be realistic and say that while music or acting means a lot to you, you recognize that you're not really changing the world or saving lives or doing something really important.

I tend to disagree.

Lawrence is so talented with her ability to act that it seems like no work at all for her. We've seen a lot of other people over the years start out with talent on her level, or better, and later realize they are not doing anything to improve their craft and their work.

Burt Lancaster was one, but there are many others.

Over my life time I've seen enough bad actors and good actors just doing performances for the paycheck to be able to tell when someone is doing a good job with a good role.

Now the celebrity system and the way such people are idolized - that was crazy in the 1930, and is worse now.

Its a job, and a job that doing average or doing very well depends so much on the material an actor has to work with. Lawrence has had GREAT scripts to work with in the past.

She is probably feeling a bit trapped right now in the Hunger Games roles - because she has to do two more movies on her contract and there isn't a lot of growth possible with the character. Katniss is actually pretty spoiled, petulant and clueless. Others use her as just a symbol rather than a person who makes things happen. Kind of like an actor or sports star.

To a lot of them it's just a job, but for people who really feel the art in their veins, it's more than that - it's a community and a catharsis.

James Gandolfini has expressed similar views on acting, but he admits he was interested in doing it because he couldn't stand regular work and had a lot of youthful anger he found expressed better onstage than in real life. For some people it is probably a saving grace of sorts. A lot of significant musicians were the same and used their craft to exorcise demons, if you will.

Celebrities who are aware of the obvious contradictions fame brings and have no trouble being honest about them are worthy of respect. They know they've been lucky, and aren't going to squander what life gave them.

I too, enjoy music. I love a good movie. I absolutely get giddy when I have a chance to go see an NFL game. But, the idolization of these folks is ridiculous. And, the perception that everything that comes out of their mouths has some relevance is downright disturbing.

And don't get me started on the celebrities that are celebrities just because they are celebrities. Yes, I'm looking at you Clan Kardashian and all your ilk.

To each their own. A photographer who goes out of his way in extreme weather conditions to capture a specific aircraft may be a little weird to most people, but those who go completely nuts when they see a celebrity are much weirder in my opinion.

Exactly. Athletes are playing to stay on the roster. They want to keep their jobs and they want to get that next contract. Guys aren't really "playing for their coach" as much as they are aware that a new regime is going to want to make changes.

There's far less wealthy people than the middle class and poor for a reason, most people don't have the entrepreneurial skills and risk-taking spirit to make millions in investments or real estate for example, and actors and musicians are no different.

Entertainment, and that's it. This idea that players owe the fans something or the idiot fan rallying cry of "we pay their salary" is crap.

Athletes, musicians, and actors are people who do jobs and produce a product that people consume. For example, I am a Bears fan because take an interest in and like consuming their product. Like I like consuming Chipotle burritos. Of course, I don't pretend that the dude making said burrito has to show me some special appreciation for my enjoyment of his work. I don't need him to make me feel special or important just like I don't need my favorite athletes to make me feel special or important. Jay Cutler could come out tomorrow and say "fuck the fans" (it's quite likely he thinks as much but won't say so anyway) and I'd still tune in next fall.

I think that's fair. They make what they make because they bring in dozens of times more in revenue and advert money. We hear about their salaries but conveniently forget (when bitching, that is) just what stupid lengths cities will go to to get a franchise. They wouldn't be doing that if it was a junk venture.

There's no question about the financial benefits. I know a business owner in my neighborhood who's a "fan" of the San Diego Chargers just because they boost his business, he once fired an employee who refused to wear a Chargers jersey on a game day!! Personally I'd like the Chargers and Padres to stay in San Diego although I'm not a fan.

No doubt. But you could say that about a lot of professions. I spend an obscene amount of money on T-Mobile (which will, rest assured, be drastically altered when this contract is up). Doesn't mean I expect them to send someone over from India right this minute to shine my shoes.

The athletes here are already giving the "people" what they paid for, just by showing up. I'm sure I could do what 90% of those guys do (run up the field, run down the field, stand around in the field, secure the bench in the case of sudden gravity loss, etc), so I agree that their jobs are not hard. But they're not paid for hard. In a way, they fulfill their obligation just by showing up. A lot of jobs are like that; these ones just pay well for it.

Only in a very indirect way. We pay the team for tickets, or more likely, the team is paid by networks for broadcast rights. The team pays its employees, and that's about the extent of the relationship.

It's silly that fans seek some sort of validation from athletes and coaches, like they need the stars to tell the fans how much they appreciate them when in reality they probably don't since it's a job. This sort of thing comes up when a team faces a meaningless game, in which they have no obligation whatsoever to play their stars for the sake of paying fans.
