Public Space: You See A Stranger Typing On A-net..

Tue Jan 08, 2013 4:25 pm

As per title.....what would you do?

Just to clarify, I am not one to peek at somebody else's screen (I'd like to think I have my own life) but it can not be avoided sometimes; at airports or malls or even when flying you do get the occasional glance at other people's screens / computers.

Say that you're seated next to somebody who's actively typing a post on here......would you say "hello" as a fellow member?
Just curious because I happened to see it the other day......it kind of of reminded me of this site (the unmistakable blue), and joined the next day!

Cheers,

FH

Maybe try and get a glimpse of what thread they're posting to, then respond in that thread with some suggestion that you know where they are.

Well, now that I think of it, it does sound kinda creepy.

"Hey, I know this website too!"

Tell the person you're a user here. Smile. But not in a creepy way. If you've seen what he was typing, don't mention it. Feign some myopia.

Perhaps this person will write soon in this very thread...

That depends on what member it is.

I would probably say something and hope they don't get pissed that I was looking at their computer. Chances are they would forgive that indiscretion to strike up a conversation with a fellow a.net member.

I would only say something if they were typing a post, because they may not be a member. I know a guy who is on a.net all the time, but isn't a member. He is in the aircraft insurance business and uses the photos to keep tabs on planes his firm is insuring around the globe.

I had used a computer in a hotel lobby in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The hotel has two computers for guest to use. I check my email and went to Airliners.net to look at the aircraft I flew on. Looked like another Airliners.net member had stayed at this hotel and used this very computer because it was in the ‘favorites’ of this computer.

How many a.net members are there?

Is there a breakdown by country?

What would be the odds of running into another a.net member, by chance, is?

I sat next to a guy on a Norwegian flight a while back, he was using a.net, then he switched to watching gay porn and I thought no I don't want to know who you are.

I saw someone typing on one of the computers in the Skyclub at SEA once. I thought it was kind of funny, but didn't want to be a creeper, so I didn't say anything.

Watching porn on the plane? What a perv! I wonder who it was?

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember seeing Penthouse in airport newsstands. I always wondered who was reading that on the plane? I have been known to look at smut, but in the privacy of my own home/car/hotel room, etc.

Happened to me 3 times.
Once at a model plane shop here in Bangkok.
A Singaporean guy instantly shouted; "Superfly" in broken Engrish.
He wasn't a member but lurks in the forums and looks at the photos.
Once at SFO's Burger King and the other was a girl I was dating's friends boyfriend that hung out with us at a house party.

I don't know, as the temptation to get onto the same thread as soon as possible and make certain remark like whether the tomato juice was really good etc may be too much, but fairplay might indicate to reveal that you also are an Anet user

If it was someone with whom I'm close enough on here to have corresponded via IM, then I'd probably strike up a conversation and introduce myself. If it was someone I know has similar interests to me and who is familiar with my username, for example the frequent contributors in the various car-related threads, then I'd play the situation by ear. If it was just a random member, then I wouldn't say anything.

"Hi, I saw you using airliners.net. It's a great site."

If this is meant honest and that person tells me of his genuine interest in aviation, I would be happy and offer that person a beer.

I think this is also a cultural issue. Cultures who are normally more standoffish, like North America or certain countries in Europe will probably feel they are invading someone´s privacy. Other cultures, Latin America, certain ones from Asia, won´t think twice about apporaching someone in the context of the OP.

It's different both in the number of users/visitors, and in the fact that airliners.net caters to a special area of interest. If you see someone on airliners.net, you can assume they have some interest in aviation. If you see someone using facebook, the best you can conclude is that they are using a computer.

That said, I say we have a special tattoo or pin or something. That way, you can instantly recognize a friendly a.netter and strike up a conversation (and those that don't want to don't have to get one).

Well...it may sound weird...we have no right to spy or peek on other people's screen. It's none of their business. If the screen is big and we walked pass, then i would say hello mate...you like a.net?

Just remember that not many people are the member of a.net, so don't bother with them if they're looking at a.net without posting.

I remember...our a.net friends told us that they put lots of photos of themselves here, then lots of people in the aviation industry recognise them from that site. Our a.net friends don't like it cos of private reasons or whatever the reason is...That's why they stoppped posting photos here.

While I was studying abroad in Barcelona I went on Anet one morning in one of the computers in the schools lobbies. The program was fairly small, maybe 300 students in 4 floors of an officer building.
Anyway when I went into Anet and into a thread there was a saved reply on the bottom but no user was signed it or anything. I was a bit confused, I am 99% sure it was not my reply at any point.

So any member study abroad in Barcelona in 2010?
I never ended up meeting anyone interested in aviation there.

I've actually seen it a few times at my University. We have a bunch of aviation students so it is pretty common to see Airliners up during class. I haven't ever said anything to anybody about it, but I've come close. I just don't want to be that over the shoulder creeper.

I think if you see someone in public on A.net you should stand up walk towards them, point, and make a weird screeching sound:

But honestly to me I think it would be pretty neat to meet a fellow A.nutter. The problem is, though I have seen the "blue screen of A.net" once or twice, I have not been in a situation where I could say anything that would not reek of "So, I was watching your computer and what you were typing...."

Back when A.net was privately owned, "Airliners.net- The Wings of the Web" t-shirts were available from this site. I've often wondered if there's a cache of unsold A.net t-shirts somewhere. Since a t-shirt isn't everyone's cup of tea travel wear-wise, a subtle pin might be a better idea overall.

This is the crux of the issue. If you are using a computer (or phone) in a public space, then you must understand that people standing behind you can see the screen. They don't have to be "looking over your shoulder" to notice if you are looking at something that might catch their eye. To the A.net user, a browser window with A.net open has a very characteristic appearance that we might even recognize and double-take out of the corner of our eye. Similarly, porn is pretty eye-catching for most people, whether they love it or think it's the devil's own.

So when you are using a computer in a public space, understand this and choose your browsing material accordingly.

Thankfully most people are blissfully unaware of the fact that when they are in public other people can listen to their conversations, see what material they are reading, or view what they have on the screen. What other people are willing to do/see/watch/talk about in public is a source of much, much entertainment when you are waiting for a flight!

You were the first member I thought of Doc!!! Then I figured what were you doing flying between Oslo and Copenhagen, so it probably wasn't you.

Will the anonymous member ever come forward?

I endorse this idea.

It should say "When will NW retire the DC-9?" and then scratch out NW and write DL above it.

There could be a lot of members who watched gay porn on the route, so you might have to get specific on the date

Pretty "curious" statement to be making there, falstaff

We're all internet people; the correct answer is "sit and stare creepily at said person".

Funny you should put it that way. While I was reading this thread my initial reaction was that I'd just say nothing. There are way too many people out there today who 'value their privacy' and believe any attempt to burst the bubble they put around themselves as the other person acting like some sort of perv.

Long gone are the days when airliners had social directors on them who'd actively encourage folks to introduce themselves to each other, arrange for card games, etc. My great aunts, uncles and grandparents traveled during the age when their travel photos always included pictures of themselves with other couples they'd met along the way during their trips. Sad that era is firmly in the past. Life is far less interesting.

I still think one of my most interesting flights was my first solo trip to Hawaii on a classic United 747. I sat next to a guy back in the side 2-seat section in the rear cabin who was stationed at Midway. I spent most of the flight going through the photo albums he shared which captured life on the island and listening to his stories. That was circa 1980 or so. Ten years later, I was in the same section heading to London, and sat next to an architect on his way to Beirut to have blueprints approved for a custom home he was designing there. He gave me his card to show at a restaurant in L.A. he'd just designed, and the owner comp'd wine and appetizers for myself and my dining companion when I said "so-and-so sent me here". Imagine something like that happening today as a result of a plane ride.

Well said! In fact it would be quite easy to rapidly observe whether the person is actually typing something or just browsing........perhaps as a non-member.
Not everybody seems to agree with this though:

I still like to think I have a life and that I don't need to show that much interest in what is going on in some perfect stranger's life! I guess we all speak for ourselves in this matter......

Quoting tugger (Reply 34):
But honestly to me I think it would be pretty neat to meet a fellow A.nutter. The problem is, though I have seen the "blue screen of A.net" once or twice, I have not been in a situation where I could say anything that would not reek of "So, I was watching your computer and what you were typing...."

So true!

I would not take offense if somebody were to approach me, and next time I will jump the gun and approach an A-netter; I guess. My apologies in advance to whoever may fall victim......

Quoting KiwiRob (Reply 13):
Quoting falstaff (Reply 3):
depends what member it is.

How are you going to know who the member is unless you start talking to them?

Exactly, that would require a lot closer look on the right top of his / her screen......and even then you may not see it.
I would not spy, I would just ask.......
"Hey, do you happen to be an A-net member.....sorry, I couldn't help noticing the blue screen".
Or something along that line......they are sure to speak English!

Quoting KiwiRob (Reply 13):

Like many blokes I'll watch some porn every once in a while but not on a plane or in any other public place.

Roger that! Don't impose it on others........

Agreed.

I remember back when I was in college shortly after Al Gore invented the Internet, I was using the computer lab. This girl sitting next to me kept looking over at my computer screen. I had wrote in a separate window in a MS Word doc. in HUGE 72 font; "mind you're own f--king business!".
When ever she looked over, I'd open that screen. I can tell she was angry and embarrassed at the same time but it made her stop.
