Dramatic Failed Assassination Attempt In Bulgaria

Sat Jan 19, 2013 5:56 pm

Wow. This chap had a VERY lucky escape.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...n-leader-makes-speech-live-TV.html

Watch the video and see just how close this Ahmed Dogan, leader of a political movement representing the Turkish minority in Bulgaria came to being shot as he gave a speech. Incredible.

Edit: Crikey, that's also quite a pummeling they gave the attacker.

Well he was going to get it either way, it's just that much more embarrassing to the would be assassin.

And how about that Dogan guy going after him right after the gun misfired?! That was pretty exciting!

Glad to see that only the would be assassin got hurt in this!

WOW... Murphy's law at its best. Good fortune for Ahmed Dogan though.

Apparently it was a set-up... something to drum up support and raise the popularity of his party. That's what the mainstream press in Bulgaria is saying according to my friends there anyway. The video does look a bit fake - why would the guy get up on the podium instead of shooting from a distance, and how did he get in with the high security?

Another interesting fact: it was just a gas pistol that fires tear gas. A comment from Bulgarian press, "They even gave the guy a gas pistol in case he messed something up and actually shot Dogan"

Fairly widely-reported now that it was a gas-powered pistol, capable of killing, particularly close-up. Not a gas-firing gun of some description.

Hmm, my last post kept posting incorrectly with bad formatting. Not sure why. Here's another try at posting:

Bulgarian media is still saying they found 3 bullets in the pistol, all of them containing pepper spray or something similar. It could kill from very close contact, for example if fired directly into the eyes. But that would have to be from less than 5cm away.

This is copied from an email off a Bulgarian friend earlier. I've got several Bulgarian friends and they all think the same, and claim mainstream media in Sofia is disagreeing completely with Western media.

Quote:
Most Bulgarians think this is nothing but a PR stunt. Dogan was losing votes. Dogan is Muslim and "fights" for the Muslim rights in Bulgaria. He knew this is going to go international! Bear in mind the gunman didn't shoot. He had the perfect opportunity but he didn't. Watch the video again, the gunman wasn't even trying to press the trigger. All was faked just to bring attention to that particular party, which many people dislike because of its Turkish links.

I'm still not sure what to think... maybe some Bulgarian members of A.net can comment?

If the whole thing was fake the guy who went up there with a gun knew he was going to walk away with some serious bodily harm. Where would they find someone that crazy ???

It seems that there were no metal detectors in place until after the attack. The National Protection Service was responsible for security in the immediate vicinity and inside the building, while local police were responsible outside the building. The assailant appears to be wearing a badge, allegedly from a previous party event.

With his past connections to Bulgarian security, could Dogan asked the NPS to look the other way? It was reported that he intended to step down as leader so it is unclear what advantage a staged attack would bring.

The assailant, a Bulgarian national and ethnic Turk, was a known criminal with drug related convictions. Perhaps somebody offered him a deal he couldn't refuse?
