5 Year Old Suspended Over Bubble Gun Threat

Tue Jan 22, 2013 3:25 am

Have adults gone completly crazy when it comes to gun safety? A 5 year old PA girl was suspended from school earlier this week after she made what the school called a “terrorist threat.” using a bubble gun blower! The kindergartner was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation during her 10-day suspension.

I think the school might of thought the bubble were dangerous to the kids. Get some of that stuff in your eyes and that could really sting!  http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headline...-suspended-over-bubble-gun-threat/

Well I hate jumping to conclusions without much information, but this appears completely stupid... it's no secret that I am a gun owner but I'm sure my non-gun owning compadres will agree that this is reaction is pretty extreme

The 10 day suspension i agree that it is extreme. But the psychological evaluation not. After, all what have we learned from the gun lovers on the other gun threads: its mental illness that is the problem.

It got reduced to a 2 day suspension. But still, dumba$$e$ in charge make dumba$$ decisions. It will get way worse.

If I could trust psychologists to be reasonable, I'd be more in favor. But given that some adult human being treated this as a "terrorist threat" it wouldn't surprise me if some psychologist is just as idiotic.

I seriously hope that whomever did this is never permitted to work near children again.

Isn´t this a result of the so called "Zero tolerance policy'" I mean, the suspension may appear extreme, but aren´t schools forced to suspend their judgement due to this zero tolerance thing? Is it actually up to the criteria of the principal or do they really have no say in the matter?

But at the same time, there is a chorus of people advocating that teachers should be armed.

With a mind set (like the teacher who suspended this kid) they should be kept well away from kids IMHO !

Not to split hairs but I am certain it wasn't a teacher who suspended the child. The report of the incident more than likely came from a teacher but the decision to suspend undoubtedly came from the school's principal or maybe even someone higher up the chain.

Without having all the facts, I'll refrain from voicing an opinion on whether or not the suspension and mandatory psych eval are too severe. I'm quite curious to know what the child actually did and said. I understand the school having a zero tolerance policy with regard to bringing a "gun" to school and that would explain the suspension. But what in the heck did the little girl do or say to make the school require a psychological evaluation?

This is a gross overstatement. He was misquoted. What he meant was giving children the proper psychological and practical support from an early age when their family situations required it (i.e. father or mother in prison, etc.) so that the children didn't end up the same way their parents did, by way of proper education.

Which in itself isn't a bad idea - it was just too politically incorrect for him to bring up.
Cheers

I'm surprised that toy guns are allowed to be sold at all in the US if this is the reaction using them gets. Kinda shows how screwed up parts of the world are today.

Why on earth do they make a bubble blower in the shape of a gun anyway?

I don't know everything yet, but I'm inclined to think this response is indeed over the top, yes.

Ok, so what does that mean? I'm not being snarky, but I am pretty clueless as to how some doctors look at others. Are psychologists more freewheeling or something than physicians?

If the teachers were armed, would they have had the right to shoot the girl? I can see the guys at south park already coming up with ideas for a new episode ...

They've had 'gun' like shapes since as far back as I can remember. Considering their quirky shape and colors, I don't think the manufacturers ever imagined this happening though.

So just for the record....
The little girl was at the bus stop and "threatening" to shoot her friend and herself with the "bubble" gun.
The bubble gun was not in her posssion.

However these schools can't be to careful these days. If that had been an Assault bubble Gun modified to be automatic with a battery, there could have been a fithy situation to mop up.

Seriously though. It is rather disturbing that the school didn't take an obiously teacheable moment, and instead turned it into a PR disaster. If my kids were in that school , I would seriously consider removing them from it, just because I would be scared that the teachers and principles within that schools system aren't capable of common sense solutions.

It is pretty hard to imagine any circumstances that should lead to a child of five years old being suspended like this - at least in the absence of severe, medically-recognised behavioural impairment. But then, if there was any such serious medical issue they perhaps wouldn't be there in the first place to lead to suspension.

Ill try to find a picture of it when i get on a real computer but it is basicly shaped like a pink dolophin with a handle and the bubbles come out if its beak.

It is less firearms shaped than my Makita drill

Can we hire that teacher for certain schools in certain districts of Berlin? Preferrably the whole school board.

Sometimes, I'm embarrassed to be an American citizen. This is one of those times. This story keeps getting more bizarre as more facts are revealed. According to this report, not only didn't the child have the "gun" with her, but she wasn't even in school when her "threats of terror" were made. Wow.

Not sure what they can sue them for, though. If it's on her record, then defamation of character, perhaps? I would also sue the individual responsible by name and spearately from any suit against the district.

I might go after them on the angle that it is a crime to (intentionally) falsely report a crime.

You say that as a joke, but if a man in Florida can shoot a teenager for the music being too loud and try to use "Stand Your Ground" as a defense, I promise you that an event like the one you describe WILL happen.

Yep, these 5 year olds are pretty smart nowadays and can modify these plastic toys into automatic bubble weapons. You would need a mop to clean up after this one.
