ASU Prof Arrested In PHL For Liberty Bell Threat

Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:09 am

Oh god...

http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/story/20...-threatens-to-blow-up-liberty-bell

Guy was part of the Sustainability department and on a trip to PHL he alledgedly made threats to blow up the Liberty Bell....for whatever reason. Arrested on scene.

I've seen the guy too....friend of mine was his student....it's really scary, but I knew looking at him he wasn't quite right in the head. He's had a poor rating recently on rate my professor
http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=676850&page=1

Fox 10 said that the guy had social issues with his neighbors, with one woman threatening to put a restraining order on him.

And just like that I will no longer reconsider my transfer from ASU to Jouchi Univ in Tokyo; I don't want terrorists for professors.

It says that he is a former prof, and probably for good reason. But this story shouldn't serve to tarnish ASU's good name as a place of higher education, since every faculty at every university has a resident lunatic.

My Business Ethics professor, although a genius, is one of such lunatics. I don't know what vendetta he has against the 21st century, but the mere cite of a cellphone or laptop sets this guy off, even if it isn't during class time. But he will never be fired because the value he brings as an educator far outweighs his odd behaviour, which is exactly how it should be.

That's hysterical!! Thanks for that, I'll be chuckling all day!

As for the nutjob in question, there's a lot of that going around these days. As the rhetoric has gotten more extreme in these past 10-15 years (thanks, Rush), the line between behavior that is inexcusable and justified has blurred, at least to some of us.

Edit:
Also, from 3TVs story online:

Quote:
"According to Maricopa County Superior Court records, Balsas was an ASU assistant professor beginning in 2004, teaching urban planning. He was denied tenure and promotion to associate professor after a lengthy performance review process that began in 2009."

So to ASU's credit, he was weeded out.

Maybe he should just stick to Sim City and stay out of academe.

Hey, they're no Ivy League institution, but there are certainly worse schools in the US

Tongue in cheek? I'm not sure how he can be blamed for crazy professors...

From what I heard he wasn't former, but just on sabbatical this semester. My friend, who is a Sustainability major, reaaaalllllly didn't like the guy.

New one comes out 5 March....I have mixed feelings about it. We should start a separate thread for that though...
