Tue Jan 29, 2013 4:19 am

Surprised a topic hasnt been started on this yet.

Very saddened and shocked to hear that a nightclub was over capacity and 231 people died due to smoke inhalation and blocked exits.

A horrible tragedy for sure, and one that gets me personally, since I lived for many years in Brazil and have lots of friends there.

But another tragedy is that these type of fires keep happening on a regular basis, hundreds are killed, and the reasons are the same:

1) Overcrowded venues; filled beyond capacity.
2) Expired permits for operation.
3) Not enough emergency exits. There aren´t any, or they are locked or blocked.
4) Poisonous materials that when ignited will kill you with their smoke emanations in less than 5 minutes.
5) Idiot musicians who think they are also pyrothechnic experts.
6) Un-trained staff who can´t recognize a deadly emergency and whose orders are to not let anyone out.

Over 1,000 people have been killed in similar, if not downright identical tragedies since the year 2000

CHINA-25 december 2000: fire in mall and night club kills 309 in Luoyang.

VENEZUELA-1 december 2002: 50 dead in a fire in a night club in Caracas

US-20 february 2003: 100 dead and 200 injured in a fire in a night club in West Warwick, Rhode Island.

ARGENTINA-30 december 2004: 194 dead in a fire at the cromañon night club in Buenos Aires caused by pyrothecnics.

CHINA-20 september 2008: 44 dead and 87 injured in a fire in a night club in Shenzhen, caused by inside.

THAILAND-1 january 2009: 66 dead in a fire in a night club in Bangkok caused by pyrothecnics.

RUSSIA-5 december 2009: 155 dead in a fire in a night club in perm caused by pyrothecnics.

When is this going to stop? It´s madness.

This is not a new problem with nightclubs, one of the worst such fires occurred in Boston, MA in November 1942, the 'Coconut Grove' fire. Over 492 people died from a fire set by a busboy improperly disposing of a match after using it to look for a missing light bulb. Here is further info on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoanut_Grove_fire

One has to take care when in crowded places like nightclubs. If cannot locate exits, if exits are blocked or locked, if there seems to be a lot of 'security' staff, quickly leave and even consider reporting the facility to local fire and police authorities. Of course, too many of these clubs have paid off police and other regulation authorities, some are owned or operated by local criminals who can do anything, too many patrons do try to sneak in to avoid paying expensive 'cover' charges and some are designed or layed out for privacy that are just dangerous.
