Do You Like Winter?

Sat Feb 02, 2013 8:51 pm

The short days, long nights, cold and rainy weather, snow and blizzards for some parts of the world, and last but not least the flu.

I love winter, especially when everything is covered in snow. It just makes everything look peaceful and I love how everything gets quiet.

I don't mind winter, but I hate when the temperature gets below zero, and I hate snow. I really like rain and when the temperature is just above freezing level though.

Since I do a lot of my work outdoors in the open and often at night, I hate winter. Part of my work takes place in heated offices or the hangar, but it is totally unpredictable. So either I´m dressed to warm for inside or not warm enough for outside. Also, airport ramps are usually very windy places.

I have been to the tropics and I prefer tropical climate at any time.

Snow just makes environment look way more bright and beautiful.

Exactly. This is what I call 'real winter' - freezing, lots of snow, and some sun on occasion.

The idiotic winter in the UK is just annoying. +1 to +10 most of the time and very damp. It sucks.

When I was living in cities like Hamburg or Berlin, I used to hate winter. For the past five years, I have been living south of Munich within walking distance to the country side, where snow is (and actually stays as) something fluffy and white that is calming to look at. So winter has grown on me. And it seems that a daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 i.u. of vitamin D help to battle my winter depression.

It is still my least favourite season, though.

I like the cold (the kind we have around Paris, never experienced a very cold winter outside of a week at a very high alpine ski resort).

When you're cold you put a pullover or a plaid on and you're warm, might even light a fire if you have a fireplace. When you're hot there is nothing to do.

Then there is the weather, I don't mind rain or snow but not seeing the sun for weeks at a time is really annoying. A good incentive to become an instrument rated pilot !

And finally the short days, I find that horrible and am terribly tired during winter because of that.

Winter has character, I have grown to prefer it over summer, how tastes change, infact come to think of it the change came with a kind of spiritual awakening long time back, since then I feel more in tune with winter, its like the two gel together.

I hate it.

The lack of sun, daylight, the cold, the rain, it's depressing. There's nothing good or enjoyable about it, except maybe for the occasional snow and winter sports.

I'd say sleeping in bed under a thick blanket is nice, but it's completely written off by the absolute torture of having to get out of it in the morning.

I'd go back to living between the tropics if I could. Or 30° latitude, tops.

I'm in Miami so yes it is AWESOME  at the same time when I was in D.C. and when I travel because cold and dark winters were not the norm for me and now still are no longer the norm I enjoy them when I get the chance to get into some cold winters or shorter days.

Do I like winter ?

Oh yeah, I really LOVE winter ! Like, the inch of snow we got yesterday, and after I had the sidewalk all swept off out to the car, the other inch and a half we got today.........and the wife wanting to go to the "Follies" at the old theater up in Rockville tonight with her lady friend, Carol; sure, I love the wintertime; I even swept the sidewalk off again and helped her out to Carol's car ! ( Not that I'm gonna get mine out and slip and slide around, when I can sit here and watch the fire place burn, listen to Mike Huckabee on Fox News, and lie to everyone on Non-Av about how much I LOVE this good ole winter weather ! ( I gotta keep an eye on the drive way though; she'll be coming back home after while, and I gotta run out and help her back into the house so she doesn't slip on the snow and hurt her butt falling down on the slick sidewalk.)

Another thing I really like about the winter time, is because I'm so "needed"; when I'm still trying to sleep in the morning, and all red the birds out back are pecking on the back window in the family room, trying to wake me up so I can fill the feeder back up with sunflower seeds so they can eat "breakfast"; then Steamer and Blackie (who got to sleep in the laundry room last night cause it got down to 10 "above" outside,) are trying to get me to come and let them back outside, all while the cats are meowing to get their cat food filled up, and while I'm doing that, Miss Arlie needs another carton of 2.25% down from the stack up near the ceiling; maybe when I get that done I can run back outside and empty the cat-liter bucket in the dumpster and bring in some more fire wood from the wood shed out back ? While I'm out by the wood shed the squirrel that lives in the hole in the big beech tree will be wanting me to get a couple ears of corn out of the corn crib, and while i'm doing that I'd better hurry, cause if I don't, Peabody will probably wake up and pee on the linoleum before I can get back inside and let HIM outside to "go". Yes siree, I realy love the wintertime ! (gives me something "to do" !)

I hate winter with passion. Love the long days and heat of summer. I can take advantage of my backyard and the pool. Now, in winter, I'm just confined to the house. If I could, I'd do the snowbird thing. Sometimes I seriously think about applying for transfer to our JAX plant.

I always loved winter when I lived in Connecticut. But now that I am in North Dakota, not so much. Something about constant -10F temps with -30 windchills just screams depressing. Though I have to admit I can shave a full 10 minutes off my preflight compared to summer . I wonder why that is!

I hate winter.

It is bad enough the days are so short. Now that I live in the Bay Area, travelling is not as bad. Not fun going to Reno, but to LAX or LAS is okay. What I really hated was winters in PDX. They had so much ice. Not so much snow. That made everything that much worse. Plus, everything was closed. I always feel so isolated and alone in winter in the Northwest. At least, here, I can go to the city for a day for a change of pace.

BTW, it has gotten up near 70 here the past few days. It is only suppose to be around 60 tomorrow. Oh, the horror!

Here in the south west of Western Australia we rarely see snow, and then it is only seen in a couple of locations. It's summer here and the temperatures are in the high thirties and the UV-index is extreme. Hot easterly winds can burn grasses in their path. The land looks tired and exhausted. The bush is quiet as birds and native animals seek whatever respite from the relentless sun that they can.

Reasons to like Winter:

No bush fires and rain replenishes the dams and reservoirs as ephemeral creeks and streams run once more. Farmers can hope that their crop grows to ripening stage and they get a good harvest before a drought sets in.

Good winter rains result in splashes of wildflowers stretching as far as the eye can see in the pastoral districts. New growth provides an abundance of food for insects, birds and marsupials, as well as grazing for livestock.

Yes, it can be grey and dreary with overcast skies, and waiting for a bus in the rain might not be a joy for those on their way to work. But water is life. Hatred of winter is mainly a city thing.

In mid winter, when i have nightshift, I often don´t see the daylight for weeks. When i get up late afternoon it is already dard. I drive to work in darkness, work in darkness or artificial light (often not more than a headlamp or a torch), drive home in darkness and go to bed while it is still dark. I hate it!
Nightshift in summer is nice. Not having to dress up like a Michelin tyre adverticement, starting wotk while it is still bright, a few hours of darkness, finishing work with the birds chirping and driving home in a glorious dawn. I love it!

Yes. I'm in the minority in that I am not bothered by dark, I really hate the sun overall, and I love gray days and rain. I like variety--a little sun here and there for fifteen minute chunks can be lovely, and in the winter the sun doesn't bother me. But if I had to pick between every day being gray and every day being sunny--it would definitely be gray.

So sort of the opposite of this:

Yes. Thank God for Air Conditioning!!!!!! But I prefer not to be stuck inside the house for months in a pair of boxers clinging to the air conditioner. It's nice to actualy enjoy going outside...

Over about 70F/22C it quickly starts to get less and less pleasant to go outside...especially if the sun is out.

Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 4):

I also prefer rain to snow. Snow is nice when it comes down, and it looks nice on the ground, but I'm not a fan of the slush and mud-crud afterward, and it is hard to bike in the snow. I am not a fan of heavy rain (except short exciting thunderstorms can be cool and a relief in summer). What is truly beautiful and invigorating is fog and bits of drizzle.

Quoting pvjin (Reply 7):

I have mixed feelings towards winter. I've always wanted to see a winter without snow, but I need it to go skiing and sledding, and so far I haven't been able to do much of the latter. I also want to go skating. I hate really cold weather, although I can tolerate it if it lets me do all of the above. This winter has been okay, I don't like the cold snaps, but at least if I want to go skiing I don't have to drive to New Hampshire. We need more snow, I want to have a sledding party, if only it would fall on a Thursday or Friday night!

Here in YVR, winter generally lives up to its nickname of Raincouver and to be honest I dont mind, Im used to it. We may get a couple of days of snow, but shorts weather year round here.

I work in an office all day, so it doesnt really affect me what it is doing outside. However, summer is a clear favorite as in winter its dark when I leave work and when I leave in the morning, so I cant stop by the airport on my way to or from work. I love long summer evenings, take my dinner to the viewing deck at YVR and snap classic 727's and Convair's on the freight runs which you never see move in winter as they move in darkness.

Also, this is such a beautiful city and so many nice parks and beaches to go, but you need good weather to enjoy it and lots of water really is different if the sky is blue instead of grey.

I do actually like snow, I love driving in it (would be nice if some of the Lambourghini & BMW drivers stayed off the road...) and you cant beat photography on a bright sunny day with snow on the ground.

I don't mind the rain as long as the temps are 65+ (18 C), we don't get much rain in SoCal anyway so it's always a welcomed change, plus it's much needed to fill the reservoirs for water supply.

Quoting Mir (Reply 5):
That Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow today is rather depressing.

You're kidding right?! The groundhog's climate prediction capabilities are rather irrelevant in the 21st. century.

Quoting NoUFO (Reply 9):
It is still my least favourite season, though.
Quoting Aesma (Reply 10):
Then there is the weather, I don't mind rain or snow but not seeing the sun for weeks at a time is really annoying. A good incentive to become an instrument rated pilot !
And finally the short days, I find that horrible and am terribly tired during winter because of that.

Unless you live in or around the tropics, winter = more darkness, why would anyone prefer darkness over light?! Why would anyone like the "flu season"?!!

Quoting planeguy727 (Reply 12):
Also - in cold you can add layers, whereas in heat there is only so much you can take off before society labels you indecent

There's no nude beach near you?!
Quoting francoflier (Reply 13):
I'd say sleeping in bed under a thick blanket is nice, but it's completely written off by the absolute torture of having to get out of it in the morning.

Especially when it's freezing cold or raining.

Quoting vikkyvik (Reply 14):
In Massachusetts, winter is my least favorite season.
In Southern California, winter is my favorite season.
Quoting flymia (Reply 15):
I'm in Miami so yes it is AWESOME

Southern California is the second best place to spend winter in the contiguous US next to Florida.

Quoting HELyes (Reply 21):
I hate the winter darkness, not much day light up here in mid winter.

And too much light in mid summer?! I would love to experience the midnight sun.

Quoting Quokkas (Reply 31):
UV-index is extreme.

And folks still go to the beach @ 2 pm to work on that tan!!!

Quoting Quokkas (Reply 31):

Agreed, but winter is still my least favorite season!

Quoting IMissPiedmont (Reply 34):
I consider all the months with temperatures below 100F to be winter months. I love hot weather.

Same here, but for me it's 80 F, 100 is a little too high!

Quoting n229nw (Reply 35):
But if I had to pick between every day being gray and every day being sunny--it would definitely be gray.

Interesting, I wonder what's your idea of a winter escape holiday?!

Quoting n229nw (Reply 35):
Autumn is the best of all. The winds, the fog, the leaves, the changes from day to day. Cannot beat October in New England. It is magical. Too bad I don't live there anymore.

I'm not a fan of Autumn but I agree with you on this one, visiting New England in the fall is on my must-do list.

Quoting BOStonsox (Reply 37):
I have mixed feelings towards winter. I've always wanted to see a winter without snow,

I've always wanted to see a winter with snow, maybe we should switch places for one snowy winter week!

Quoting WildcatYXU (Reply 38):
My choice is clear. And I really appreciate the extra living space.

+1 Although our winter is nothing compared to yours!

Quoting dragon-wings (Reply 41):
The only thing I don't lie about winter is my hands get chapped because I am always washing them.

Use hand sanitizer instead, my germaphobe ex co-worker loved the stuff.

There is no air conditioning available in France?

In Europe air conditioning is not as common as it is here in the USA. European homes are more set up for heating than cooling. That's why when you hear of these 100F heat waves in Europe so many people die. So all people can do in the heat is open their windows and hope for a cool breeze.

Air conditioning is available in most of Europe but it is far more expensive than it is here in the U.S.

I've lived in Northern Michigan and Wisconsin, and I miss the real winters up there - the beauty of the snow and the frozen Great Lakes. Mid-Atlantic winters (brown and rainy) just aren't the same, but the older I get the more I'm OK with the milder temps.

However, I think homes in Southern Europe need A/C just as much as they need heating.

Few years ago, due to my travel schedule between the US and NZ I got to experience a year and a half long summer.

I love it. No, not necessarily the mild Perth winters, but the cold, wet, snowy winters that I experienced when I was on holidays in Vancouver and Whistler. I love it there so much that I've been there three times - twice in December, once in January/February.

Although even mild Perth winters are much better than the extremely hot summers here. I can't stand the heat, but I love the cold weather.

I live near New York City. I love all four seasons, that's why I have never moved from this area. Each season has its own specialties. I could never live in a place like Florida where it's hot, hotter, and hotest.

But I do love winter, especially sitting by the fireplace.
