New Cruise Ships Coming, Due Fall Of 2014

Sun Feb 10, 2013 9:37 pm

I just read an interesting article; Royal Caribbean is in the process of building two new 158,000 ton cruise ships, the first of which is scheduled to be ready for service in the fall of 2014.

The line that really got my attention was, and I quote; "If Max Planck, Niels Bohr, and Erwin Schrodinger walk into a bar, on a cruise ship, what would the name of the ship obviously be" ? ( I spent the next 5 minutes making my "best guess", I was close, but still a little off ); we'll see if any of our resident A.nutter "nerds" can guess the correct answer, (without looking that is) And DON'T cheat !

The link below has the whole story.

I feel slightly ashamed to admit that I correctly guessed the name   (But I'm a chemist by trade so...)

Did not need to guess it because I had already watched RCL promo videos on this new class of ship. Looking forward to sailing on them when they come out. RCL is our favorite line and most frequently used cruisel line.

Will be nice to see it although these days I prefer the Celebrity brand as its more up market and I prefer the decor. The food is better onboard too.

I've only cruised on two lines (RC & USN) and RC was far more enjoyable. I really enjoyed sitting by a window in the Windjammer when leaving ports, relaxing with a cuppa and no brass to polish afterwards.

We took RC from Rome on the Western Med about 18 months ago and I've been looking for another good deal ever since. The FF miles on BA are loaded for the flights and a good sales (plus some better health on my part) is all we need.

I am not in on the new apartment blocks cruise ships. I would not go cruising on them if they paid me.
Is this the newest "Oasis twin" being built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire ?

Queen Mary 2 is the biggest I can take. She is beautiful and she was born in France.
Big Mary is a Beautiful Big ship!

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Only because the French Govt were prepared to pay a much higher subsidy than the Finns were prepared to pay.

But not designed there, which is the important bit, she was only built in France because the French govt offered Carnival the biggest subsidies, it that really something to be proud of, your tax being given to a foreign corporation who have no operations in France?

No. As per the article, they're being built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.

I know the OP mentioned 2014, but there's a new "Peter Max" coming in the next few months - Norwegian Breakaway. The ship will be based year-round in NYC, hence the choice of Peter Max, the design of the hull artwork and the choice of The Rockettes as Godmother to the ship.

Wonder if there'll be another "Where's Peter Max" thread a-la the Continental 777?

No. Different class entirely. The Quantum class, formerly dubbed Project Sunshine, will be similarly sized to the Freedom class ships (Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, and Independence of the Seas), but will carry about 600 more passengers. I'm interested to see how RCI treats it. My wife and I are RCI fans and have cruised on Grandeur of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas - when I heard the original project name I was hoping that the Quantums would have some of the features of the Radiance class ships that make them so beloved (particularly the amount of glass and views on the ship - as much as I loved Freedom sometimes you need a reminder that you're on the water and in some places, especially the Royal Promenade, you feel completely disconnected from the sea).

Original designs would come fro RC, but it is hard to imagine that the shipyard building her can't come up with identified problems, improvements, and other design suggestions.

As far as government subsidies goes, I have no problem with that as it puts people to work, developed experience (especially for the younger workers) and probably results in a net gain when all factors are included.

The floating apartment we sailed on (Mariner of the Seas) was a fair size, but it didn't feel that way to us. Large dining room (with string orchestra) was nice, but the buffet high on the fantail gave great views of entering and leaving ports. For us it was as much about spending time in various destinations than it was sailing. We are old enough to want a comfortable ride between our stops and these large ships are far more comfortable on the overnight transits than the smaller ships I was on in the navy.

Some very cheap RTM-SOU rates also for the launch
