I Have Never Seen Rugby Played

Mon Feb 11, 2013 4:00 am

It's true ! I've "been there, did that", but I've STILL never seen a rugby game !

While we were at the PD clinic last week, I was talking to one of the nurses and the subject got on women's rugby ! Women's rugby ? Are you kidding me ? Hey, that's a pretty tough sport; I didn't think "the girls" had taken up rugby yet !

She said, "not only have they "taken it up", they play it all the time ! As a mattewr of fact, there's a magazine in the lounge with some pictures of women's rugby; why don't you take a look at it ?

Well, after I "looked", I thought......."yeah, there's no doubt about it.........I can't wait any longer; I gotta go see my first ever rugby game ! The sooner the better !

So.......I was wondering........has anyone around here ever seen rugby ?

Never seen women's rugby, but have seen a men's (college) rugby game before. They do some...interesting...things that are confusing and at the same time hilarious to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the sport.

You're in Chicago, right? There are games in various place up and down the lakefront all summer, usually early Saturday and Sunday, with several teams usually playing around Lincoln park. Mostly men's games, but you do see an occasional women's game. There are a bunch of other places in the city and ‘burbs with games as well.

A departed buddy of mine was a somewhat nutty player (although that may be redundant), and was, for a long time, the oldest player in the Chicago regular leagues (the senior league has rules about tackling at the knees and things like that, he felt that was too tame). One day he showed up at a party with his ear mostly stitched back on to his head. He was basically OK with the other guy having taken it off his head with his fist, as he had been standing on the other guy's teammate's face with his cleats trying to relieve him of the ball...

OTOH, I've never seen a women's game with uniforms like that... Or for that matter a men's game...

I played both versions of Rugby for 6 year in high school and compared to American football, Rugby, in both versions, is simple and strait forward. Grab the ball & run like h*ll to get away from anyone else! Other details are involved of course.

I have never seen women's Rugby and sincerely doubt that they actually play in that get up! The boob damage would be very painful, not to mention the skin damage.

Where I come from it is basically the national sport so I have seen plenty.

A great game, although some of the subtlety and interpretation tends to make it hard for first time viewers to watch. However, once yuo get accustomed to these, it is a great sport to watch for a combination of strength, athleticism, and strategy, (not unlike American Football in this regard)

I have also seen women's rugby, but generally the players do not look like the ones depicted in those ads

Charlie if you're still alive when the next Olympics are played you'll get to see Rugby Sevens. You'll most likely see New Zealand win that medal too.

Rugby is a beautiful game, far better than any other team sport IMO.

I agree, but that may have something to do with us growing up in NZ and the exposure it gets here. This is the only country in the world that didn't sell out an LA galaxy game with Beckham playing in it but when it comes to the AB's, no worries.

Great sport though, played it in school like many NZ kids

You know, It's funny you happened to mention New Zealand; Miss Arlie and I were sitting in this fancy restaurant the other day, and they had this HUGE big world globe, sitting up real high.....must have been higher than your head when you're standing up; anyway, I'm gazing at their big globe, (I've always loved to look at globes), anyway, because it was up so high, it was like looking at the world from down beneath it; so I'm looking at Antarctica, ( boy that place is BIG !), then I'm looking at Australia, and how far "above" Antarctica it is.........then I noticed New Zealand !

Damn ! Here all this time I've always had the idea that NZ is just "right next door" to Australia ! Unless that big globe is seriously "out of whack", that's one HELLAVA long swim to get to Sydney ! It looked like you could "fit" the U.S. in between the two, and have room to spare ! So, is it really that far, or was that globe "out of whack" ?

BTW............There's NO doubt about me still "being around" for the next sumer games ! If I didn't have so many "projects" lined up, I would probably "try out" for the U.S. Rugby Team !

Most people don't notice the dot at all, so well done

Rule of thumb - 3 hr flight from Australia.. In some cases, it's good we're not closer

Back on topic - the men's game is professional and I'm not sure the women's one is.. So straight away, you'll notice far more coverage on men playing it.. Quite similar to a lot of sports really. There's too much coverage down here and I get sick of it.. Especially tonnes of rules which go out the window if the ref is no good. I enjoyed it a few years ago, went to quite a lot of matches but these days, the 'season' runs from February to November. No escaping it when you're in New Zealand!

What they need is a propper sevens squad, like they had a a while back. That said we are generally considered the best at sevens despite the result in Wellington.

Typical.....this thread has 11 posts and nearly all of them are by New Zealanders.

Most of the time when women play rugby, they play 'touch' which is a slightly less rough version.

As a New Zealander, it is pretty much impossible not to have. This country is absolutely fanatical about the sport. Even our national airline has a whole lot of planes painted in a special livery in support of our national team;

The best bit being that the Airbus and the ATR had that livery painted by the French (whom we beat in the final of the most recent Rugby World Cup).

It is also hugely popular with our Aussie cousins across the Tasman, which makes for an interesting international rivalry.

I find that rugby is still playing catch-up in the US. Americans just don't seem to get on board with it as much. Honestly, I think if most football fans were to give rugby a shot, they'd be huge fans once they had an idea of the rules. When I was in high school I played football in the fall and rugby in the spring, and the transferable skills between the two are noticeable.

Quoting gemuser (Reply 3):

I've never watched international women's rugby, but my team used to train on the same field as my club's women's side, and their game seems to be a bit...different (although same rules apply). To be honest, I found them to be much more vicious, and not necessarily in a good way. A lot more raking, a lot of hair-pulling and scratching in the rucks/mauls, a lot of cheap shots. They also didn't seem to have that "enemies on the field, friends off the field" mentality that makes the game so great, they just hate each other.

Quoting KiwiRob (Reply 9):
That said we are generally considered the best at sevens despite the result in Wellington.

I'd be more concerned about the result in Las Vegas. They might have not gotten to the final in Wellington, but that loss to South Africa was a right spanking. Having watched both teams in round robin, I never would have seen that coming.

(Speaking of which, that Samoa-Fiji consolation game was unbelievable! Some of the most action I've seen in ages.)

I think they need to build squad, pay them a decent wage and keep them together, rather than letting them escape to Super Rugby, the only option for them would be a move up to the All Blacks.

NZ seems to have a problem of getting complacent when they are ahead. They just coast when they have a lead and sometimes (In the past few weeks) this has bitten them. The SA game was just bad from an NZ point of view. Same can be said for the warriors as well, complacent just when you need it the most.

Anyone here think that having the 7's team renamed the 'All Black Sevens' cheapens the All Black brand as they are not actually All Blacks?

Geezer, it's over 1200 miles between both the Ozzie and NZ mainland

It sounds a lot longer than it is. Here are the stats according to GC Mapper:

SYD-CHC: 1323 mi
LAX-JFK: 2475

So only half the US fits in there, but it's definitely a considerable distance. Not swim-able for sure!

The traditionalists will disagree, but I think that would be a great idea. Speaking from experience, many of those outside NZ see the "All Blacks" as a New Zealand team, not a 15's team. So from a branding perspective, I think it would be great to see. If the "All Blacks" brand encompasses both squads representing the same country, there will be a stronger bond there.

They have been named the 'All Black Sevens' for a couple of years now. While I can see where you are coming from I feel that relating the 7's team to the national side cheapens the brand. Now we have the All Blacks, the All Black Sevens, the Maori All Blacks etc etc... Personally it seems like you can be a member of any team representing NZ and still be an 'All Black' without making the actual national side.

But then I was a bit annoyed when they renamed the "New Zealand All Blacks" to the 'All Blacks' a few years ago, thought it was very important to have the name of the country associated with the team, as that is what the team represents.

Anyway, just my ancient perspective I guess (Though I'm in my twenties). Rant over

Still think only the national team should bear the name. NZ Maori and NZ 7s are full of guys who will not make the ABs so why call them that

When it did happen, there was a Welsh Club side who were known as the All Blacks and that was a historical thing dating back to the early 1900's aparantly. Anyway they were legally forced to change their name because the NZ union didn't allow them to keep their name when we took the country name out of the brand. That was a bit stink I reckon to the club.

Yea they do, taking a plane across the ditch (the Tasman sea) is likened by many to catching a bus in many respects or I suppose flying coast to coast in the USA. Multiple flights to various ports between the cities in NZ and Australia a day, it's very easy. In fact, quite a few used to fly AKL-SYD for the day, do business then come back SYD-AKL at night.

There are regular moves to consider Oz-NZ flights domestic, to ease the process for travellers. Perth is further away from the east coast than NZ, and Auckland is a semi reasonable day trip from Sydney for work.

As for Rugby, well, at least t's better than thugby league (the dominant version in Sydney), but it was better when it was very much a running game. It's still the number 2 professional football game in Sydney in terms of spectators, after Thugby, but still a little bigger than Aussie Rules and then there is the game known nearly everywhere else in the world as football.

Rugby is awesome and being South African, it's basically almost a religion. I played for many years and got a few stitches here and there, but what an amazing game. It's alot faster than NFL with less substitutions and breaks - but the strategy is basically the same.

I have invited to a game between the Newcastle Falcons and the London Irish back in 2006, I probably still have the ticket somewhere. The game is nice, but there is not really any league or so to watch over here in CEE, and I am not enough of a sports fan in general to watch what is played over on the islands.

Played it in University about 27 years ago. Don't remember there being many you ladies playing. We would have probably had more spectators in the stands. I also think I would have continued playing if those were the girls playing with me.
