Always a great idea to institute a ban of which you already know that a majority of the population is going to ignore it. All it does is moving people over to the illegal side of things, making regulation neigh-impossible and exposing people to shady business-makers and dubious software.

Wow. A very bad idea indeed. There of course needs to be great effort to curb the spread of child porn and other sorts of abusive material, but to prohibit posession or viewing of porn comprising consensual acts between adults is just daft. Measures to prevent children accessing porn are sensible, but that does not have to mean banning access for everyone. Any kind of legislation that immediately criminalises a large section of the population is inherently quite silly, particularly when it involves the satisfaction of what is ultimately a pretty natural desire.

Also, how is banning the use of credit cards for paying to access porn going to protect children from viewing it? Do many children in Iceland have credit cards?

From the article:

Quote:
A member of the parliament committee studying the issue, Jonsdottir says a porn ban has "near zero" chance of passing parliament and that she's working to find other ways the government can help protect children from Web porn.

I'll believe it when I see it.

You might as well ban prostitution. Oh wait... we did. And, voila! There is no more prostitution! *deadpan*

I agree with Jonsdottir. This would be hilariously unenforceable.

Yeah another totally stupid idea, a bit like banning of prostitution indeed, never works.

I feel huge amount of politicians especially around Nordic countries & Finland have absolutely no idea about what they are doing, they totally ignore all the realities of the world.

Well, good luck with that. I have always thought that porn was really the inspiration for the first primitive browsers -- guys sending racy pics of their g.f.'s to other grad students. No matter what the law might say, or tech fixes put in, I think I'm on reasonable ground in predicting porn will stay a step ahead.

Actually porn was sent via newsgroups and bulletin boards years before the creation of the web. Mostly by students and professors yes, since the internet was mainly present at universities.

For real, google image and video search is all a kid ever needs. Plus kids are so imaginative at that age that they can look up medical pics, nudist colonies, art, unclothed civilizations, etc and 'corrupt' themselves that way, and I highly doubt any politician would go as far as banning art that shows boobs, but you never know

Oh, indeed, porn preceded browsers by quite a while. In fact, it was only 2 years after the first moving pictures (16 frames/sec) in about 1890 or so that the first 'dirty' films were being made. So porn has been around a long time. But browsers made it so much more convenient.

I remember using arpanet and milnet 30+ years ago, just getting into discussion groups, it was fantastic. But then when NCSA released their initial browser, MOSAIC, it was like a veil being raised from my eyes.

I guess as the old saying goes "You know it when you see it" but aside from this how do they in the Iceland government define porn and how far does it go? I think everyone is in favor of banning child porn and certainly the vast majority wants to to see animal torture and bestiality banned from the net, laws are already in place for most of that around the world, this is a non-starter. The problem is, on top of the absurdity of this policy is how is it defined? Do they mean hard-core, fetish, voyeur or does it go all the way to soft-core and pictures of virtually any women that could cause someone to become aroused?

Porn was done on praxinoscopes (think flip-book viewer) well before that.

I had seen this coming as now the rate of posession of child pornography, child molestation/assault and adult rape in Iceland is quite high, if not the highest ever. I don’t agree that the ways in the articles are the right ways but as I cannot come up with a better idea to minimise the molestation rates, I am not the one to criticise Ögmundur’s ideas.

In Iceland, internet porn isn’t, per se, illegal. The law, passed in 1940, states that someone who publishes pornography shall be sent to gaol for six months. Same applies to anybody who distributes porn published on paper and as films. The law wasn’t changed when the internet became common (and thus internet pornography) so it isn’t illegal to watch porn films on the internet.

It just means that Iceland has a lot of people with something seriously wrong in their head. Instead of banning porn the government should sure concentrate on catching and then treating these people. It's insane to think banning porn would reduce amount of pedophiles and rapists or decrease molestation rates.

So important. Doesn't Iceland have other more important issues to face such as economic collapse, rapidly radically chaning climate? If this happens it will be another example of misguided prohibition. And we all know how well prohibition works. With this outlet blocked who knows what will happen in Iceland. Something tells me what happens in Iceland will not stay in Iceland. And now Nanny Bloomberg of New York will get ideas to ban/block another facet of today's society.

This has absolutely nothing with Hitler to do. If you want to blame someone, blame King Christian X who handed over the Home Rule law in 1918 specifying that Iceland should aim for independence in 25 years (1943).

Hitler prevented the King from taking part in the celebrations 17 June 1944 on the Thingvellir Plains, that's all. But the King did send a telegram wishing the new country good luck. The new president read it for most of the Icelandic population on the Thingvellir Plains - in rain.

Huh?

Porn sites are easily accessible in Korea without any VPNs or proxies.

The only thing is that there are stringent age verification systems in place for native (Korean) porn websites.

How long has it been since you visited Iceland, how long did you stay and how much did you see of the country? I suspect there are more monster-SUV’s per capita in Iceland than in Denmark but there aren’t as many of these vehicles as you suggest – in case such a monster is in the vicinity it’s likely that one will notice it, I mean…after all, it stands out!

Amazons? You mean the Amazon natives which often cut their breasts off? Or you mean tall ladies? Of the thousands of Icelandic ladies I’ve seen, few were very small, but few were extremely tall…go to Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands…even Germany, and I suspect the women will look pretty similar. That’s at least my opinion, and I’ve been in all of these countries numerous times.

Some of my Icelandic friends tell me the same thing. But when getting into details, then they confess that they compare to the boom and gloom years 2006-2007 when Iceland acted as if they owned the world. Those days will never be back, hopefully, because it always ends the way it did in 2008.

suspect there are more monster-SUV’s per capita in Iceland than in Denmark but there aren’t as many of these vehicles as you suggest

Percentage of monster-SUVs has declined during the last decade or two. Back in the 90'es they were more of a status symbol for the "kids". Monster-SUVs don't exist in Denmark. They cannot be approved for road traffic. (Maybe they could tecnically be approved as commercial vehicles, but that isn't relevant).

Amazons? You mean the Amazon natives which often cut their breasts off?

Around the world there may be different interpretations of the word "amazon" when related women. Here in Denmark I think the general interpretation would be something big, heavy, noisy (without any geographical relations) and maybe a few more adjectives, the use of which is inappropriate on this forum. That interpretation is extremely faulty when used as a generic description of Icelandic women.

Bless.

An unprecedented move for a Western country. Printing and distribution of porn has been banned for years in the island nation.

Too cold there for anyone to get naked.

That's the most common interpretation of Amazon woman almost everywhere, I don't think the Icelandic women are taller or any less feminine than other Caucasian women.

How long until the men of Iceland take to the streets in protest?

Probably right behind the women already there - I know as many women who enjoy pornography as men.

You might as well ban prostitution

The most left-leaning ("socialist" in American political vernacular) first world nations, the Nordic states of Europe, have surprising similarities with the most right-leaning parts of the first world, which is what I call places like Texas or Kansas. Prostitution is aggressively illegal and porn is under attack. Different justifications: the Right relies on God and the Left makes a religion of atheism, but eventually they both seek to outlaw the same things.

The poltical continuum is proven again: the far left and far right meet in the same type government which seeks to

1. impose morality upon the individual ///RIGHT wing spiritual justification
2. protect the individual from their own bad decisiosn ///LEFT wing intellectual justification

....Too many on the Left don't see this and imagine it is only the Right (when at extremes) that interferes in the very personal.
