VW's Super Hybrid: XL1

Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:45 am

Hello all,
First post on a.net after many years of lurking. So here it goes.

Volkswagen's XL1 is going into production. The XL1 is a diesel hybrid, sipping just .9 liters every 100 km (261 mpg  Wow!). The two cylinder diesel motor produces only 47hp. Transmission is a seven speed dual-clutch. Electric motor is 20kW. 0-60 in 12.7 seconds, which is not too bad for a hybrid. Top speed around 100 mph.

I do not trust for an instant the manufacturers' published mileage ratings. They're completely unrealistic, especially for hybrids.

It's not destined for mass production so it will be ludicrously expensive.

And, as with every other car designed for minimum drag, it's ugly...

No breakthrough, really, just a PR stunt.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

According to autoweek.nl the XL1's drivetrain will also be implemented in the VW Up family.
