Lots Of Hong Kong People In Toronto Still?

Fri Feb 22, 2013 5:27 am

I know there are lots of Hong Kong people in Vancouver but what about Toronto? I suppose there are heaps as well? Is it still the largest chinese group? Guess they mostly reside at Richmond Hill, Markham and Scarborough?

There are actually more people of Chinese descent, and from what I understand people from Hong Kong in particular, living in the Greater Toronto Area than there are in the Vancouver area.

The numbers from StatsCan indicate this as well, with 436,000 in Toronto and 348,000 in Vancouver.

Within the GTA, Richmond Hill and Markham are the largest centres as well as our 'China Towns' throughout the city of Toronto itself.

The Hong Kong population is generally seen as the more "elite" Chinese group and the majority reside in Markham (north of Steeles between Woodbine and Markham Road) and Richmond Hill/Stouffville. The mainland Chinese reside in pockets throughout the city but primarily in cheaper areas such as Scarborough, Pickering, and south Mississauga.

Quoting AF340 (Reply 1):

Not many people from Hong Kong in China Town, before moving to Poland I had been 'dining' in one Pho or Chinese place at least 3 times a week for a few years. I noticed it's a mix of mainland Chinese and Vietnamese for the most part. One real estate broker I regularly worked with was a Hong Kong native and he regularly said it should be called "Vietnam Town", because there was more Vietnamese than Chinese. Was he right or just talking gibberish I'm not sure.

Also, there are two China towns in Toronto, the better known Spadina Ave. and my favorite and much more 'grungy' Chinatown East around Broadview and Gerrard, much cheaper prices too

I miss Toronto sometimes!
