What Do You Think Of The New Yahoo Homepage?

Sat Feb 23, 2013 9:03 pm

First was the all new Yahoo Mail, and now their homepage. Looks like Yahoo don't believe in the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Am I one of the last people with a Yahoo email? I only keep it because I've had it since 1999.

Yes, and Yahoo has the nice property that you can use POP to download all your email to your PC. Seems people don't know that US law says any mail sitting around for more than 6 months is considered 'abandoned' and thus they can do pretty much what they want with it.

One of their best features, IMHO. Simple interface, points to "just the facts" context from AP, Reuters, etc instead of lots of opinionated sh*t found at more partisan web sites.

I have a yahoo email that is still in use for a few things like some forum notifications (not this one). I have never used the home page though, as I'm a big believer in POP and have more than 10 email accounts that I access with one software.

I have a Yahoo email account also. My gmail account is my primary account and the only people with my email address are those who I give it to. Everyone else gets my yahoo email address. So far, it has worked for me.

Yahoo! has been my homepage for well over a decade. I like it (as a whole site, not just the homepage) a lot and have several e-mail accounts with them for various purposes.

That said, I think this topic is really referring to the RE-rollout of the Yahoo! homepage. They toyed with this a few months ago, stopped it suddenly, and have just reintroduced it. It's easily one of their worst builds over the last 10 years. I dislike it a lot, but it's much better than it's original form a few months back (as hard as that is to believe).

It's not so bad that I'll change. I'll just deal with it for now.

Can't stand it - Why they changed it is beyond me. Hopefully they'll come to their senses and go back. It's the internet version of "New Coke"

6 months... as soon as you have opened it is open access. And while POP3 often default to downloading messages it isn't a given and not the only way to do it.

As to the home page. I have not been there in so long I can't say what is different but I find it overloaded and reminds me of the type of pages created many years ago.

What if the origin of the email is from another country? What if my email is no longer based in the US?

I still have my yahoo email account. I liked the previous email version and then one day I opened up my email and found the new format, no warning, no nothing! I don't like it nor do I like the new homepage. Nothing like having something rammed down your throat!

Given the company's declining market position and increasing irrelevance compared to competitors, I would say that it was definitely broken.

The latest roll-out finally pushed me over the edge of using news.google.com as my homepage. The original advantage of Yahoo (and something they presented as their advantage several years ago) was the simple interface resulting in very fast page loads. Not so much these days, yahoo tricked up their pages to add current methods and features including more complex advertising methods. Yes, we all have faster internet connections these days but I still see lots of delays waiting for the ad servers to respond or for the dancing toyota trucks to stop moving across the home page while I struggle to find the "close" button burried amongst the clutter.

I found the new look and feel to have the same clutter with a disturbing color choice and a "bottomless" news list that is somehow frustrating. I suppose I could find some settings somewhere to change the default look and feel but, frankly, don't care enough to make the effort.

It's like saying goodbye to an old friend but we all have to move on....

Firefox and Adblock+ are your friends when it comes to stuff like the moving trucks, txjim.

But you are right; the design is awful. The older, simpler page was so much better.

I gave up on Yahoo a few years ago when 99.999% of their "news" was just stupid entertainment garbage that had nothing to do with anything. Then they started creating their own Yahoo TV show type stuff, and passing those events off as news on their home page.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at their new page. Same crap, new cover.

You mean 98% of Facebook and Twitter addicts under 25 years old?! Yahoo is still a very popular and relevant site, there's hundreds of millions who use Yahoo Mail, most of them use other Yahoo services regularly. yahoo.com is ranked the fourth most popular website:

Same here, although I dislike the all new homepage, I can deal with it. In the past year they introduced the new homepage more than once and reverted back to the original few days later.

I hope so, just like in the past.

I still use the Yahoo Classic Mail format, they often asked me to switch to the all new Yahoo Mail which I don't like and will never use. I think those who opened their e-mail accounts in recent years have been automatically "upgraded" to the all new Yahoo Mail, it happened to my friend which made him furious.

Not to mention removing the daily news-related poll and dedicating a relatively large space for horoscopes instead! Horoscopes in the 21st. century? So much for progress! I haven't said goodbye though and don't think I will any time soon.

I do wonder about something with respect to the new homepage. I haven't tried to find out if this is true or not, admittedly.

I never stay logged into any of my Yahoo! accounts, but I think Yahoo! is learning my likes/dislikes. I've noticed that, steadily, over the last few weeks the number of aviation, military, transportation, and college football articles have been increasing on the front page. I almost never saw aviation articles on the front before. I know the 787 stuff has been big news, but I am seeing articles completely unrelated to that. Unless it's my imagination, maybe the new Yahoo! homepage customizes the articles you see on that endless list.

Just food for thought. Maybe it's not an entirely awful setup. It is nice to get a smattering of current articles on those topics just by going to the homepage and without having to search for them specifically.

It's called Behavioral Targeting, similar to Online Behavioral Advertising used by Ad Choices. I haven't noticed it on Yahoo though, if true that would be a huge step up.

Everything is much easier and user friendly on Yahoo Mail Classic. I hope it'll be available indefinitely.

I've heard of it before. I just hadn't seen it in action, really.

I'm convinced that that's what Yahoo! is doing now. Probably 5 of the first 10 articles I scrolled past just now are aviation, 2 are football, 1 is military, and the other 2 are random. So, 8 of 10 articles are things in which I am interested...

Yahoo! I haven't noticed it because I don't read a specific category of news on Yahoo.
