Which Sports Teams To You Support / Follow?

Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:25 am

As a Brit, I grew up with football and my local team was West Ham United (well Spurs were actually closer to where I lived, but thats a long story...) and although hard to watch with an 8 hour time difference, I still very much follow them.

I have always had a soft spot for Man Utd too for some reason and enjoy watching them and cheer for them in Europe.

Now in Vancouver in a hockey mad nation, I really enjoy this sport too and of course support the local team the Vancouver Canucks and own a 33 H Sedin shirt.

Not interested in any other sports, though was remotely interested in Saracens when I played rugby for my school team.

Well, maybe beach volleyball

I only follow (as in religiously be a fan of) two sports: Aussie rules football and Formula 1 racing.

In Aussie rules, my team are the Essendon Bombers. The first game of footy I ever watched was the 1993 grand final, in which the Bombers beat the Carlton Blues by 44 points. I quite liked their colours too, black with a red sash - which hasn't changed since the club was founded in 1873. Essendon have won 16 premierships: equal with Carlton and more than any other team in the league.

In F1, I've been a fan of the Williams F1 Team since 1994. The first race I ever watched was the 1994 Australian Grand Prix which Nigel Mansell won. That wasn't the defining factor for me to become a Williams fan, but because they had, in my view, the prettiest car on the grid. The Rothmans liveried Williams Renault FW16 looked stunning in royal blue, gold, red and white. Williams have won 9 F1 Constructors' Championships since their founding in 1977. Their ninth - and last - was in 1997, which was then a record. Since then, Ferrari has eclipsed that record. But Williams still has more Constructor's Championships than McLaren, despite their relative lack of success since then

Having been to Vancouver three times, I've developed a passing interest for hockey, and the Canucks. Unfortunately, I can only watch NHL games through a subsciption to the Fox Sports channel, which I can't afford to pay for. I watch hockey whenever I can on free to air TV, which is to say every four years at the Winter Olympics, and naturally, I support Team Canada.

My other passing interest is in what you Brits call 'football' but the rest of the world calls 'soccer'. I don't watch it frequently, except for the World Cup and a few EPL matches here and there. I don't really support any team, although my dad is an Arsenal fan and as such I have somewhat of a soft spot for them. I wouldn't be able to name anyone in the squad except for the manager, though :P

I grew up in Boston but my deeper (non-European) roots are in Chi-town. I will root for a Boston team, and for a Chicago team, and try not to pay attention if teams from those towns are vying. But if I have to:

I will easily root for the Red Sox over the Chisox.

Boston has no NL franchise, but should a Cubs-vs-Red Sox World Series ever happen, then we know the apocalypse is 20 minutes away anyway, so I'd be on a hillside hollering my shema instead of watching the game.

I'd probably root for the B's over the B-hawks, but it would be a tad painful.

I hate basketball.

NFL-wise, in a Pats-vs.-Bears situation, I really don't know which way I'd go. That would be a experiment.

Elsewhere in the country, I will root against any (non-Patriots) team that has a state name instead of a city name (Minnesota Twins, Florida Panthers, Colorado Rockies, Carolina Panthers, New Jersey Devils... they really all must either a) be named after their cities, or 2) be dissolved )

And I will enthusiastically root against any team from the San Francisco Bay Area. I lived in San Francesspool for 16+ years and I welcome any opportunity to give it a slap in the face.

I'm originally from the east coast of the US so most my teams are the "big" ones. For the MLB I am a big Yankee fan. Went to my first Yankee game when I was little with my father and been a fan ever since. Though I have to admit I don't watch near as much baseball as I once did.
When it comes to American Football it is the New England Patriots all the way. Though my entire family are Giants fans, so you can imagine the 2012 Superbowl costs me a few dollars and some pride!
Now my favorite sport recent years has been hockey. Something about going to school at a big Division 1 hockey town really makes the sport so much more enjoyable. For college I have to root for my school, the University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux). The NCAA may have taken away our name officially but you will see no sign of that here. The name and tradition is still alive and well. For the NHL though it goes to the Minnesota Wild. When I was little my mom used to work as an executive secretary for the Hartford Whalers but sadly they decided warm and sunny Raleigh, North Carolina market was better suited for them. But hey money makes the world go round. So I was a man without a nation as one may say for a few years. Then my mom's boyfriend (now husband) was a Minnesota boy. So one winter break we went out and visited him and he decided he wanted to have a "bonding" day with her boys. Well he got us incredible seats at the Xcel center and they've been my team ever since. If you're ever in MSP check out a game. With the exception of the Ralph Englestead arena here in Grand Forks, I don't think there is a finer place to watch a hockey game.

Four Canucks sweaters, two Canucks hoodies, two Canucks henleys, no less than 15 Canucks caps, two Canucks shot glasses, Canucks licence plate holder, Canucks key chain, Canucks pucks, Canucks flag, Canucks rally towel, and two Canucks tattoos. Take a wild shot in the dark...

And I was so very proud when the Buccaneers won their only Super Bowl.

I only follow football thanks to different Internet broadcasts. And surprise surprise I support Millwall FC. South Londons finest and proudest. A club that still has the edge supporters used to have in English football.
Had a season ticket for many years and traveled away regularly from the late 80:ies to 2001 when I left London.
I Dont like what modern football is turning into though, we have a yank owning our club now. Bostonian apparently, he is ok to be honest, but some of the other owners in English Football, the Malaysians in Cardiff, the Kuwaitis in Forest, Glaziers in ManYoo etc should be shot.

And the entire world calls the sport football not soccer.
Minus the antipodeans and the US that is.

In Canada/US I enjoy NHL and I can watch a game of Aussie Football when in Aussie, AFL isn't football but its a decent sport and it has some traditions and pride in it.
Cant stand rugby or bum-licking ball as it was called where I grew up.

Apart from that I miss topless darts. A quality TV sport if there ever was one but unfortunately the major broadcasters seem to shy away from it.
Now we when have lost the prude yanks from the European broadcasting skies (ESPN didnt make it, lost to much money and never really gained much marketshare) and BT takes over ESPN Europe we might get it back though. Heres hoping...

For me it is FC Bayern München. The best team, nicest city   . Last year's Champions League final was just a terrible game. I still don't get how that worked out for Chels. I really hope Bayern doesn't make it to the final again, because after loosing 3 finals in 4 years, I would not be able to watch one single minute of a match again.

The only team I follow "religiously" is the Miami Heat. Been a fan of them ever since I was a little kid. My first memories of Heat basketball was the 96-97 season with Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway taking the team to the eastern conference finals. I just like to point out I've always been a heat fan before Lebron and will be after he is gone.
For college I go with my alamater The George Washington Colonials. However I will go for my home college and grad school team too especially when they are top five in the country, that being U of Miami hurricanes.

Even though football (american) was my best sport it is a sport I don't go to the actual games much but I certainly enjoy watching. I watch most Miami Dolphin games and I am certainly a fan of them but not a huge fan. I also have always followed the University of Miami football team and go to their games more often than dolphin games. Right now they are free for me anyway.

I also enjoy baseball but unless its a big game or the playoffs I can't watch much on TV it's too boring I always have enjoyed going to games though. Again always been a marlins fan but these days it's hard to root for them.

Don't follow hockey much but I go to Florida Panther games once in a while. And after spending 5 months in Barcelona I became a Barca fan for my soccer club when it's not the World Cup which is the only time I try to watch a lot of it.

If I had to pick a "2nd" favorite team from the major sports league, ones I usually like to see win are the Wizards in the NBA, Redskins in the NFL and Capitals on the NHL from living in D.C. for 4 years and in baseball the Blue Jays because that means the Yankees, Red Sox or Rays might be losing. And for some reason I like seeing the Orlando Magic do well it is something about the Magic logo from the 1990s which made me just always like them when I was younger.

Growing up within equal distance of Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, my sports team loyalty has shifted over the years. I grew up being a Orioles and Redskins fan but slowly shifted to being a strictly Philadelphia fan, so Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and probably would be a Union fan if I cared for soccer. I also follow the WVU, as it's my alma mater.

Therefore, I can't wait til my teams are good again

Football: I have an Arsenal FC season ticket and went to see England in the Euros last summer. Which was a whole lotta fun even though we are useless.

Cricket: Was due to go to the upcoming Ashes Oval test but i now won't be able to make it due to matters outside of my control. Absolutely gutted about that.

Sometimes watch Surrey play too but wouldn't call myself a follower.

I follow college football, specifically being from Nebraska the Cornhuskers. My entire family will get together to watch the games. Don't really pay attention to the NFL until the playoffs.

I also follow the Oklahoma City Thunder. Living in the city, I go to games from time to time. It was really cool last season being in the championship.

I follow f1 and always have. I don't care who wins too much i just want to see a good race. Some of the drivers i decide i don't like, vettel for example, but the rest i don't really put one before the rest.

If football is on i'll watch it but don't really have any favourites and i've never understood how someone can support a team like some do.

I remember watching a wonky eyed millwall supporter in a leather jacket clime onto the pitch and threaten the opposing team's keeper with a knife back in the early 90's. I always thought that was class....

Steelers Jerseys - 7 Roethlisberger, 43 Palamalu (SB43), 36 Bettis (SB40), 86 Ward (SB43), 12 Bradshaw, 26 Woodson, 99 Generic Steelers Jersey, several other generic jerseys

Penguins Jerseys - 87 Crosby (Stanley Cup), 71 Malkin (Winter Classic), 66 Lemieux, 68 Jagr, one generic no number jersey

Pirates Jerseys - 6 different generic no number jerseys and a old 18 Van Slyke Jersey, but still rooting after 20 consecutive losing seasons.

Follow the Pitt Panther teams and the Penn State teams as well.

Don't have a basketball team but does not mater since I can not stand basketball anyway.

Born and raised near Pittsburgh but since I live in San Diego now after the Navy I will root for the Padres and the Chargers but not when playing my original home town teams.

Button, Alonso, Kimi => F1 drivers.

The French football team, especially against Italy (as most of my family supports the latter).

The various French skydiving teams because that's my sport and they're the best.

Also, the French riders in the Tour de France because they need it !

I have for my entire life followed Manchester United 'religously'. In the last 2 years I've only missed one game, and keep in mind, I'm in PER, where some matches start at 4am.

I try to visit Old Trafford once or so a year, but haven't been able to the last 3 years, and am partly ashamed for that! At one point I even considered applying to the University of Manchester to get closer, but my parents convinced me that I was just being stupid.

By the way, my father is a die hard Manchester City fan and the last season and this season have been extra heated.

I also follow Tromso IL (also football) which is my local top division team in Norway, as well as Perth Glory (football) here in Australia.

I do follow a bit of AFL (Australian Rules), where my favourite team are the Fremantle Dockers. Used to be a season ticket holder, but am not this season due to the amount of games I'm likely to miss.

I do like to follow all sort of sports, but when it comes to specific teams I cheer on, then the above would be them.

Only really follow two sports, football & Gaelic games (both gaelic football & hurling). I dont support any Irish club football team, Arsenal are my team. Had many nice weekends over in London attending a few games, last game I was at was nearly 2 years ago, need to get back to the Emirates soon.

Being a true Irish sports fan of course I'm a big supporter of the national sports. When it comes to supporting your local club it depends on where you are from. Club teams are all about the community, you don't support a GAA club because they are successful or your favourite county player plays for a certain team. My local club team is St Peregrines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peregrines_GAA. We are not one of the most successful teams in Dublin but we are by no means the worst. We are more of a football club than hurling, our first football team plays in division 2 & our second team won division 6 last year. Like any club sport were if your good enough you get selected to play for your national team, in GAA you get selected for your county. Dublin is my county team & you wont find anyone who is big a Dublin fan as I am. Currently the Dublin football team are top of division 1 with 2 wins from 2 & in September 2011 we won the All-Ireland final for the first time in 16 years ( the All-Ireland final is one of, if not the biggest day sporting occasion in Ireland each year) We have been quite successful at U18 & U21 level in recent years too. Our U21 team won the All-Ireland in 2010 & 2012 & in our first game this year we won by 37 points! (any gaelic football match were a team wins by 37 points is a VERY one-sided game) The U18 team won their All-Ireland last year & were beaten finalists in 2011. The Dublin hurling team is nowhere near as successful as the football team but we have been doing well at underage level in the last few years.

That All-Ireland final in 2011 was the day best day of my life, here are some highlights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j56XDU6WDGc

I would not call myself a rugby fan but I do like to see my provincial team Leinster do well along with the national team.

Football: FC Barcelona and my local team SM Caen (that's in Normandy, they play in 2nd division). I've been a die hard fan of both teams for about 20 years now. I used to spend my summer holidays in Catalunya when I was a teenager, so it was quite natural for me to start supporting Barça.

NHL: Montreal Canadiens. A die hard fan too, but hockey grew on me only a few years ago. My brother went to study in Montreal in 1998 and he used to talk about the hockey team there, but I never really paid attention to it, because hockey is an obscure sport in France (which is a shame because it is truly a great sport). With the coming of broadband Internet, I started to be curious and went often to watch hockey highlights on the NHL website, paying special attention to the Canadiens' performance. Then my company transferred me to Montreal a couple of years ago and that was just perfect for me. I went to the Bell Center a couple of times and I watch all games on TV.

Basket-ball: I follow more the players than a team in particular. At the moment I pay attention to the Spurs because of Tony Parker, but I also like the Celtics (which I went to see at the TD Garden last December).

American football: I started watching that sport when I moved to Montreal. A friend of mine is a huge Patriots fan and I often go and watch the games with him. His passion for the club influenced me a bit, I guess. But I can't really say I'm a "fan". I'm happy when they win, but not really sad when they lose... yet!

There has only been one team that I have constantly supported since childhood days when Niki Lauda won the title: the Ferrari F1 team, the red heart of Formula 1. Not too much of a fan of other sports, I do of cause cheer for the local football team Eintracht Frankfurt, which is doing quite fine this year. I hope to see at least one game in the stadium this year. Internationally I always liked FC Liverpool.
As you can judge from all this my favourite sports colour is of cause red!

I was born and pretty much raised in Montreal, so naturally I eat, sleep, breathe the Montreal Canadiens. I now live in Ontario so I haven't had a chance to get out to any Habs games in a few years, and I'm forced to put up with those insufferable Leafs fans...

Of course for Canadian football I'm a huge Montreal Alouettes fan. I actually have my name engraved on a brick in the stadium as a donor to their stadium renovation project. For American football, I'm shamefully a fan of the St. Louis Rams. I became a fan because when I was first getting into football as a kid they were dominant, winning the Super Bowl, so I decided that would be my team. I refuse to be a bandwagon fan, so I still stick with them even though they're pretty awful these days. In the NCAA I'm all about the LSU Tigers, couldn't even tell you why, I don't remember how I started cheering for them.

I'm a huge rugby fan, but it's difficult to get into Super rugby from North America so I only follow international. I always cheer for the All Blacks (15's and 7's), unless of course they're playing against my home team! I finally graduate in a couple months, and I plan on having my debt paid off within a few months, so next year I'm planning on going to one or two sevens tournaments (definitely Vegas, probably London, and hopefully NZ if the bank account can handle it).

I watch most Man Utd games, but only because my roommate hijacks the TV whenever they play.

I got it after either the first or second super bowl victory. Have not worn it since his off the field incidents and am still deciding if I will ever wear it again.

The announcers jinxed the Pirates after the all star game last year after the NL won one of the announcers said "just think, the Pirates could host the World Series this year". It was after that that we forgot how to play baseball and started to lose.

Since rugby is New Zealand's most popular sport I follow rugby but don't go to many matches.

All Blacks
Hurricanes (local rugby team playing in the Super 15 with teams from Australia and South Africa)
Wellington Lions (local team playing in the national NPC championship)

Screw shirts. You aren't really one of the mouth breathers until you flip a car and light something on fire.

As for me, I'm pretty much a Chicago guy.

I'm a big Bears fan, Bulls fan (sad, but still a fan) and Blackhawks fan. For baseball, I follow both the Cubs and White Sox. I'm definitely more of a fan of the Cubs, but very much prefer attending White Sox games since Wrigley Field is a shithole.

I actually don't have much interest in attending Bears' games since they're expensive, the weather is often bad, and the fans are stupid and annoying.

As far as college, I have no strong loyalties, I just watch the best games. I detest Dick Vitale and most hardcore college sports fans, particularly those who did not attend the school in question and SEC football fans. They tend to be fat, stupid, and semi-illiterate. I also detest the NCAA in general. They are useless, corrupt, and rarely get things right.

I do have some affinity for John Calipari, just because he is an unabashed basketball don barely even pays lip service to the student athlete crap. His pitch is basically "come spend a season with me, don't worry about class, and in a year you'll be a millionaire." That sort of honesty is something to be admired.

And finally, a couple housekeeping items. If you're over the age of twelve you should not be wearing any jerseys unless you are actually going to play. Seriously, grow up.

Also, unless you play for the team, work for the team, or own the team you do not get to refer to a sports team as "we" or "us." It's okay for high school as long as you attend(ed) the school in question, but not for college.

I am a fan of any team who plays the New York Yankers.
I am a fan of any team who plays the Dallas Cowgirlz.
I am a fan of the Vancouver Canucks. Not like Seb146, 1 cap, but I have been a fan since 1978.
I am a fan of the Seattle Sounders and Seahawks.
That's about it.

The announcers jinxed the Pirates after the all star game last year after the NL won one of the announcers said "just think, the Pirates could host the World Series this year". It was after that that we forgot how to play baseball and started to lose.

I think everyone jinxed them, including their own selves... They looked a head, and then they derailed...

They've done that year after year tho. They'd play relatively strong in the beginning only to tank around the end of July. It didn't help either when opposing pitchers began to figure out McCutchen. Notice how his batting average dropped off?

Forget about 2010; that was probably the worst season in the entire history of the franchise!

I haven't worn Big Ben's jersey since SB 45. I only wore that because I misplaced my Hines Ward one. At least the Packers are a franchise I respect and actually like. Outside of Dallas, there WAS no SB 30!! I will forever lament the name Niel O'Donnel, the worst QB in team history.

It was funny, as there was a photo published in the paper of a guy doing just this who was my double and of course the authorities were wanting folk to turn in people they recognized from footage. The waitresses at my local bar were my alibi as various ones were wanting to know where I was that night!

I Dont like what modern football is turning into though

The EPL may be the best in terms of quality at the moment, but the lack of academies for home grown talent to make it to the top level is worrying.

Apart from that I miss topless darts

Thats an odd one for a Texan living in NZ - any reason? Unless they get their stuff together you might be watching Championship football next season which would be shocking for a club their size.

Got the wrong end of that matchup. Unfortunately, it looks like Derrick Rose is going to the same place Stockton and Reggie Miller ended up.

Not as far as I'm concerned. Except for referee Dick Bevetta, they might have won one of those championships.

I've been following Formula 1 many years from the days of old til now. My favourite drivers of the past were Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Graham HIll, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost and Schumi. I have always shown interest for Japanese teams and drivers.

I also like watching football competitions, the World Cup and also local. My favourite teams are Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia and Italy. My favourite local teams are AS Monaco, Inter Milano, Juventus Torino, Lazio Roma and Milwall FC in the UK.

Boxing is also interesting but it has completely gone out of fashion.

Favourite clubs: Ipswich Town FC, St. Pauli FC. Other sports can go swivel, except for maybe ice hockey - like a KHL game when I can see one.

More like without a ring.

If having a ring was the only criteria for someone's greatness, that would mean that there are more great players out there who never got a ring and therefore, they really aren't "great". I dispute that criteria.

I would imagine that there are more "great" players in the basketball hall of fame without a ring than those that DO have a ring.

In the NFL were Dan Marino and Fran Tarkenton not great even though they never got a ring? Dick Butkus? Gale Sayers? The Viking's Purple People Eaters?

The same is true of any sport's hall of fame, actually.

Being a kiwi I'm programmed to follow rugby, so I support North Harbour in the NPC, the Blues in Super Rugby, the All Blacks and anyone playing Australia. I hate rugby league with a passion, it's just a stupid bastardisation of a great game. When I lived in London I supported the Quinns, manly because my favourite player at the time ZinZan Brooke was captain/coach.

I've been a life long fan of the WRC, although I don't follow any particular team or driver at the moment, I just enjoy watching it, I'm a Rossi fan in Motogp, many ears ago I was and ardent Fogarty and Slight fan in the Superbikes, in F1 I support McLaren, more due to Bruce being a kiwi than anything else, I look forward to the day a kiwi finally gets into F1, it's been a long time since our glory days. IRL I support Dixon, he's done me proud, a double champion.

I also take an interest in rowing and Americas Cup yachting and support Emirates Team New Zealand, I am really looking forward to the next regatta, the Cup should be heading back to its home in Auckland, we miss it.

I never said it's the only criteria, but it's a big part.

For example, I'd say that LeBron James is the most skilled basketball player in history. He has the most ability and can do everything that Michael Jordan could and then some. But Jordan is still the greater of the two.

Halls of fame don't mean much to me anyway. They've largely gotten out of control so I just quit caring.

Football:
#1 Favourite team is OGC Nice. Currently they are coming 5th in the French Ligue 1, which is pretty good for them.
#2 Favourite team is Paris Saint-Germain, though I don't like them so much now that David Beckham has joined.

Internationally, New Zealand's team (the All Whites) doesn't do particularly well so I also cheer for France and the Netherlands' Oranje.

Rugby:
#1 Blues (Because I'm an Aucklander)
#2 Chiefs (because both my parents are MooLoos)
Supporting the All Blacks goes without saying, though I also support France (much less so since a certain match in 2006).

F1: Ferrari + McLaren. Favourite drivers are Räikkönen and Massa.

V8 Supercars: I really liked Stone Brothers Racing, but they no longer compete. My favourite team now is Dick Johnson Racing, though TBH I like any team who drives Fords.

Yachting: In the Americas Cup [Emirates] Team New Zealand is my favourite. Lots of people from the yacht club I used to be part of now sail for them or have done so in the past. I also quite like Luna Rossa (even visited their home in Genoa a few years back).

Quoting texan (Reply 23):

Its been a peeve of mine that we haven't had a proper Americas Cup since 2007. At the moment Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are both testing their AC72 designs on the Hauraki Gulf which is really, really cool to watch (both are unbelievably quick). In the next cup, I expect several teams will crash spectacularly like Oracle did last year.

NCAA: Texas Longhorns (all sports)
NFL: Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans
MLB: Houston Astros and Texas Rangers (welp...they're in the same division now)
NBA: San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder are my top 2 (I don't love the NBA, though)
NHL: Dallas Stars
EPL: Manchester United
La Liga: Real Madrid
Serie A: Inter Milan
AFL: Essendon Bombers

Any and all USA national teams, followed by the Wallabies for rugby (since let's be honest, the Eagles barely play rugby anyway).

Yes, I watch and follow all of these teams.

I don't know where I find the time.

Cheers,
Cameron
