A Bunch Of Parsley For The Freedom Of Speech

Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:40 pm

A Tunisian TV which is expecting financial difficulties in the near future due to the kind of embargo exercised by the government to prevent it from announcers and ads revenues had the idea to sell parsley in front of its HQ in downtown Tunis to collect money ! The campaign went this morning and it was as successful as they had to bring extra quantity to put it on sale. A thousand of bunches were sold in the first hour or so at the given price of 20 dinars (10 euro) ! A price which is of course inflated (approx. 100x the real market price) but Tunisians wanted to show involvement in freedom of speech and determination not to let the government decide on what they want to be heard and known and what they don't or wouldn't or shouldn't. The TV in question is known for its constant criticism to the government and to the "ruling" party, thing that the new dictators do not like. There was a beautiful line up of men and women from different ages and classes waiting to donate 20 dinars ( the daily pay of most of Tunisians) in exchange of a bunch of parsley that could have bought it a 1/100 rate from the nearest market. That looked like odd but was great !

Of course there is a story behind the choice of parsley and not any other fruit or vegetable. One of the new TVs pro government is said to be financed by the father (now minister) of the founder who was during president Ben Ali imprisoned then denied rights to work... thing that led him to sell parsley in flea markets ! Of course this is fake because everybody knows that it is an investment of the now "ruling" party !

How is Tunisia doing these days? They were influential in kicking off the Arab Spring but I haven't really heard of them since then...
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

Tunisia is still looking for political stability since. There were elections in Oct. 2011 and the (expected to be/so called) Islamic party won... God knows how, (of course with financial aids and subventions from Qatar, and thanks to the brainwashing they had made to a part of the electors, with a focus on the fact that they have been oppressed during the past years and that they want to establish a fair society in which equity, freedom... are basis...but they didn't, and didn't show any willing to do it) and since then political quarrels rise every now and then to criticize their ruling... expected to be democratic, but isn't really ! There were a political assassination of a rude opponent about three weeks ago and everybody knows that the ruling party is behind it... and guess what ?! They are now accusing the salafists (more radical islamists) to have committed the crime. The so called pacifist islamists shouldered by Qatar and its lobby are driving Tunisia and Egypt into an instability...

Some in the ruling party really believe in "moderate Islamism" similar to Turkey (personally I don't believe it's really moderate but rather curtailed by secular checks and balances) while others really want a theocracy, so when radicals attack opposition rallies, bars selling alcohol, theaters showing movies they don't like, etc., they officially condemn them but don't do anything to stop them.

Exact Aesma and you seem to have a good idea on what's happening, but keep in mind that in the ruling party itself there is two wings, moderates and radicals, and it's always the radicals who have the final word. Today for example, the party called for an internal réunion to discuss the possibility of "firing" two moderates from the party after having talked about the need to establish a honest dialogue with the progressists ! For long time Ennahdha had used of the salafists to threaten the progressists and now they are accusing them of having committed a political assassination ! The salafists are swearing all their Gods not to have any relationship with that murderer, but they had once believed in the promises of Ennahdha and they are now simply paying the price of being naif. Ennahdha had promised to establish a Turkey like society; democratic, organized, prosper... but they had recently announced loudly that they wouldn't follow Turkey in its process towards a democracy and a fair society... and then God knows what they are preparing... always in coordination with their ally, Qatar !
