The Show COPS. Why? And Who Watches It?

Fri Mar 08, 2013 3:59 am

I get COPS every day on a variety of channels and I never watch it, unless I there is nothing else on TV. My question to the American members here is: Do you watch it? Is there any real reality to it? Who watches it?

Is there such heterogeinity in police derpatments across the US? The shows I find particulary disturbing is when they show the New Orleans PD. The LVPD is always a lot better.

If it's on when I turn on the TV i'll watch it. I like it, especially the episodes filmed in cincy and in PHX. It shows you how much work these people have cut out for them.

I'll watch it occasionally if there is nothing else on. Sometimes it's funny to see what these people do and say to try and avoid arrest. It's sad what people do when they are on some strong drugs. Although I'll never forget watching one episode where they tasered a guy and he kept going. Had to hit him again to bring him down. He was one big dude!

I watch this show occasionally depending on what else is on and whether it's a rerun I've seen a lot. It is neat to see the old episodes and old police cars compared to the new episodes. There's some old episodes in Philadelphia where the officers run around town during the night shift picking up wounded and rush them to a patty wagon for transport to the hospital as quickly as possible. That's something that probably wouldn't happen now.

The other thing I like about COPS is it is all real, although they do add sound effects. No staging and fake crime scenes, real taping as it happens.

Yes, it is one of the original reality shows! Never thought about it until you mentioned that.

Sometimes, and I'll admit to having memorized the voiceovers at the beginning. My dad watches it religiously every Saturday.

Quoting AR385 (Thread starter):
Is there any real reality to it?

Sadly, yes. What you get is a direct look into white trash America: drooping pants, drug use, general idiocy, etc.

Quoting AR385 (Thread starter):
The shows I find particulary disturbing is when they show the New Orleans PD.

New Orleans has some very bad places, although this might be less since Katrina. Supposedly some of the thugs left during the storm and never came back and become someone else's problem. I have heard that there are places there where the cops just won't go because it's unsafe.

I'm not a fan of the show. I don't find other people's misery or mistakes entertaining at all.
Although I did find the car/truck chase very amusing.

When I used to volunteer at my local rescue squad on Saturday nights, we watched that show for fun.NY area FOX was airing new shows on Saturday nights(if I remember it was at 8pm).    But we were often out of the building by then, so we rarely have seen a full episode.

As you never know when a call comes, it was OK to pass the time. We that or watch movies on DVD. And you would be surprised how often we had similar experiences in the filed. You truly can not make this stuff up!

By far the best episode ever of COPS was the X-Files episode that featured Mulder and Scully investigating alongside the COPS TV show crew. It was a pretty funny episode (doable since both were Fox shows).

I don't watch it much. I prefer a show like the first 48 but when nothing else is on I might watch a bit. I usually enjoy the older episodes with the older police cars like the mid 90s caprices or the late 80s chryslers. Especially the episodes where there is no computer in the car or some very old green screen type one.

A funny show is Campus PD where they follow officers only on university campuses a lot of drunk idiots which IMO is funny.

I watch it sometimes when I just want to go "oh... Americans".

Kiddiiiiing. It is entertaining sometimes.

BUT, there is a new reality show, following real life Boston cops. I've seen the first episode last week and that was really good. I don't remember what it was called, but it was excellent because it's basically following cops in their day to day lives, whether good or bad, whether there's a lot of movement or not. Really, realistic, and not overly dramatic.

It is shown by the same channel that shows Southland. In fact it's just before Southland. (oh and Southland too is an awesome TV show).
Cheers

I love COPS. I think mostly because it gives me motivation to never been in the positions that most people are in on COPS. I don't be the one on the other end of the lens of the domestic violence, drug, person with a gun call and just general drunken behavior.

Believe it or not that's actually still protocol in Philly and some other major cities-patients with penetrating trauma need to get to the OR as quickly as possible. Waiting for EMS to arrive delays the process, so some cities authorize their PDs to transport gunshots and stabbings to the hospital. This is backed by medical literature as well.

Very interesting, I would have thought there would be liability issues with the police transporting patients. There is a little risk of not putting on a neck brace for example and moving the patient, but of course with gun shot and stabbing victims there is probably not much for spinal injuries and getting them to the OR as you said quickly is probably worth it.

That's a good show too. The kids do some pretty funny things when they are drunk. I find it especially funny on the scenes where the cop says he won't do anything to the kids if they stop bothering him, but they just keep on and end up getting arrested.

Speaking of police shows, is anyone else a fan of Alaska State Troopers? It's one of my favorite shows on TV.

Don't watch it, but the show does educate people about the way a police officer's day can suddenly turn from routine to deadly in a second.

We also have to remember that for every hour shown on the show - there are many, many more hours that are boring and nothing to show. Once in Dallas they interviewed one of the shot camera men for local news. He complained about how dull the 'action' was and how many hours they wasted with nothing worth filming.

I guess they didn't ride with the right officers.

A police department is a reflection of the population it protects. The membership tends to be a bit behind the latest population trends, but not terribly different.

The show also hi-lights the worst possible view of a city much of the time. Folks don't want to watch the routine patrols in a very high end neighborhood where nothing much happens.

I used to watch it.

Problem was too many re-runs of the same show.

They've got 20 or so years to pick from and it still seems they'd rerun the same subset of the shows.

It's a pretty interesting programme. I like being able to compare the way the cops work to the UK way of doing things. I am not so interested in seeing other people's misery and mistakes per se, but without that we wouldn't see the cops working as they do.

It doesn't seem to be new as often as it used to, but it should be on between 8 and 9 pm Eastern on FOX on Saturdays. The first half-hour show is new, the second is rerun from earlier in the season.

One of my favorite episodes of COPS is when they came to MSP and they were driving around to different areas of the city I had been to before.

I did not even know that was still on TV? My old Captain in Special Ops (SWAT) was on there years ago, when he got shot. He rolled up on a guy that had just robbed a bank and they exchanged fire through the windshield. He didn't even realize he had been shot in the chest, until he pulled his cigarettes out of his front pocket and they had blood on them?.
The bad guy he shot was in the ambulance and they just jumped in a car and halled-ass to the ER. I forgot all about that until I saw this post.

It attracts small audiences -- some are probably dedicated fans, but most watch it because nothing else interesting is on. It survived because it's cheap to produce, is cheap to acquire syndication rights and attracts just enough viewers to make it worth while. Most channels that air it -- both local antenna & cable -- typically use it to plug holes in their schedule ... which is why it often airs beyond midnight, or on weekends. G4 and truTV are the last two channels to faithfully air it in the USA, and when G4 transitions to Esquire Channel soon, it probably will be dropped.

Due to a record-low number of programs being offered for syndication this fall, FOX is offering a new version of COPS, called COPS Reloaded: "It's such an iconic brand and after 20 years in syndication, we felt there were a lot of things we could do to freshen up, reenergize, recreate the show, while still keeping the things that the COPS viewers love about the show. Every episode will be re-edited. Different segments will have the best chases, funniest and wildest criminals, or the show's craziest moments in the show, but it will retain that great COPS storytelling," said John Langley, COPS's creator and executive producer.

"I think COPS will be in syndication forever."

They will only show what's new from the current season. Usually, you'll only get 1 episode a week, but sometimes, you'll get 2.

The LVPD is always a lot better.

I always knew that if they were in Las Vegas or here in Atlanta, we were in for a great episode. The guy the created Cops has a similar show that focuses on Las Vegas Metro PD called Vegas Strip that is always good for a few laughs (Every episode usually has drunk visitors doing something stupid and getting into trouble, a hooker or two getting busted, and usually something so strange that even the officers shake their heads.).
